A Good Nights Sleep
It was late November and the entirety of the Gryffindor house had celebrated a Quidditch win the night before, resulting in nothing other than a mess in the common room and a hoard of students nursing headaches and exhaustion. Lily Evans didn’t know who brought the alcohol (a seventh year perhaps), and she didn’t know what possessed her to drink it alongside Marlene (who was on a table by the end of the night), but she had, and she struggled to open her eyes the next morning.
She was tempted to go back to sleep, the curtains around the four poster bed shut entirely blocking out the rest of the world, and it was impossibly warm even with the cool early winter temperatures. Her head nestled against the pillows, making to grab the comforter and roll over to get some more sleep, but instead of a blanket, she grabbed an arm.
Instead of rolling over into another pillow, there was the unmistakable presence of another person in bed with her. Her eyes sprang open, no longer exhausted, her brain scrambling to remember what the hell happened last night.
You were drunk
Mary was in the room with someone.
You wanted to go sleep
Remus! You asked Remus for his bed!
Just until Mary finished and then you would go back to your room.
It’s been a stupid day.
Frustrating to the point of tears. They stick heavily to her eyelashes, threatening to wobble and spill; an offer of company to the wave of overwhelming homesickness. She misses her parents, and her friends. She even misses Petunia, and the pinched looks she’s always giving Lily.
It’s been six months since she moved to study abroad and she’s only made one friend. Entirely by accident, as well. Sirius had witnessed her rather hysteric, entirely silent, breakdown in the corner of the library, waiting until she had finished stomping her pen into the ground, mocking it in a whisper. He wordlessly held up a baguette and what turned out to be a container of homemade hummus. They’d spent twenty minutes eating until all the bread had gone, and now Lily gets to barge into Sirius’ apartment whenever she wants.
It’s far nicer and far more private than the dorm she lives in.
The door is unlocked, and Lily huffs as she kicks off her shoes.
“The fucking day I’ve had. I need a fucking bath. I’m using your bath.”
She stomps into the living room, coming to a dead stop in the doorway.
Sirius was there, lounging comfortably across the couch, scatterings of McDonald’s wrapping around him.
“Hello,” Lily says, awkwardly, to the man tucked into Sirius’ side.
Sirius’ grin widens. “Hello, Lily. This is my boyfriend. Remus.”
Remus waves cutely at her, smiling brightly, apparently unaffected by the strange woman barging into his boyfriend’s apartment, raving about stealing his tub.
“You must be Lily. Sirius says you’re the only other person in his class that’s not an idiot.”
“Thanks.”
Remus pats the couch. Sirius doesn’t tell her to fuck right off, so she sits gingerly on the edge, instead of slouching into the comfortable pillows and kicking her feet up on the coffee table like she usually does.
Unsubtly, Lily glances at Sirius from the corner of her eye.
He’s playing idly with Remus’ curls, twirling them around his finger, before letting them bounce back into place.
“So,” Lily says, drumming her fingers across her knee, “how long have you two been together?”
Remus beams. “Three years. I work at a tea shop, and Sirius kept coming in and pretending to drink tea.”
Sirius barks out a laugh, and kisses Remus’ shoulder, smiling into the fabric. “Remember when you got yelled at by your manager because you spent thirty minutes arguing with me about coffee?”
“How on earth can you pull a steady relationship, but I can’t?” Lily snaps, before Remus can reply.
“Yikes. Mary dump you?”
“Worse,” Lily grumbles, sinking into the couch, arms crossed, “she ghosted me.”
Remus winces. “Ouch.”
“I just want a single win. One. Something interesting to tell my family back home. My sister is getting married. Married. And before you say anything Sirius, I’m not jealous. I just want something interesting to report instead of how I have to wear sandals in the shower or that I found a grocer within walking distance.”
Sirius levels a long, contemplative look at her. He glances at Remus, then smiles, slightly evilly. “Lily, I know the perfect person to introduce you to.”
Lily Evans and Sirius Black had friendship brackets. Pass it on.
