The collar of his shirt was too tight, pinching at the skin of his neck. Shane raised a hand to fiddle with the uppermost button until eventually he decided, screw it, undoing the button to allow himself to breathe a bit better. He didn’t care if it looked messy.

The question had come out of nowhere, breaking the silence at the table. Bailey stopped scribbling notes in her book as she looked up toward Shane. He was still scrawling symbols into his Biology book, pausing every now and again to circle a word; she wasn’t sure if he was actually doing it to learn, or just trying to look like he was.
