His phone barely had time to ring before Izuku was answering it with a grin. There was a moment of buffering before your face cleared up on the screen, a finger pressed to your lips to warn him to be quiet for a second. The camera flipped to show off you and his two year old sound asleep, snuggled up on his side of the bed no doubt. She always took it the hardest when he went on drawn out missions— when he left in general. Izuku wouldn’t blame her though, his own heart was tugging at the sight of dried tears and the sound of her soft and steady breaths. When the camera flipped back to you, he got the chance to drink you in better. He took in your sleepiness, but also the mischief twinkling in your eyes. You padded through the house, making distance between you and the sleeping tot before starting a light hum in the tune of the ‘happy bithday’ song, while he chuckled lightly at your gesture.
It was an odd time where you were, but on his end, it was midnight. Of course you’d call just in time to wish him a happy birthday. It was the first one he had to spend alone in awhile, and he wouldn’t lie and say he was handling it well. There were many perks and joys of being a hero, but missing out of family time was more than inevitable.
“How’s it going over there, birthday boy?” you asked softly, now leaning against the countertop in the kitchen. He knew you were analyzing him as well, eyes scanning him for new bruises and injuries. He probably looked exactly like the stress he was going though, hair damp from a late shower, dark circles blooming from a sleep schedule that was crazier than an on-call surgeon’s.
“Tiring, honestly, but seeing you two makes up for it.”
“You should be home for your birthday, I had a whole thing planned,” a theatrical groan left your soft lips, a sound he felt in his core.
“We can do whatever plans and surprises you had in place as soon as I get home. How are my favorite girls?”
There was a pause before you spoke again, “Aika misses you to bits, of course, but she settles as long as I give her something that smells like you.”
“Mmm, I’ll make sure to call back a little later to say hello when she’s up. How about you, baby?”
You smile gently, “I’m good, but truth be told I’ve been keeping a secret from you.”
He raised an eyebrow, face unreadable but he urged you to go on, “Is everything alright?” Izuku couldn’t control the festering worry in his gut.
He could see you reaching for something off screen, “depends on your reaction,” was all you said before bringing something white onto the screen.
Three slender sticks, all of them reading positive. His eyes widened just a bit, and in perfect Izuku fashion his bottom lip began to tremble, tears welling against his lash line.
“Really?” was all he said, a bright smile splitting his face as you nodded rapidly.
“I was going to wait until you got home to tell you, but I was too excited,” you laugh, cheeks warm as your nerves evaporate at a positive reaction. It’s not that you expected a bad reaction, Izuku was a family man by design, but anxiety was a hell of a hindrance.
“No no— I’m so glad you told me. I’m so..overjoyed,” he chuckled, rubbing at his eyes, “I love you so much, thank you.”
“I love you too, ‘Zu. And thank me? For what, silly?”
“Giving us the opportunity to expand our family once again.”
This time it was you sniffling, “hurry up and get home you big sap.”
