I Prefer Girls, by Scout
NYOTA UHURA Star Trek (1966)
To the woman that inspired countless girls and people of color, we will never forget you.
You will always be in our hearts.
Thank you for going where no woman had gone before.
Nichelle Nichols 1932- 2022
Nichelle Nichols as Lt Uhura
The great Nichelle Nichols has passed away at the age of 89. 😭😭😭 Her impact as Uhura went beyond acting roles. Representation matters and this role literally influenced Mae Jemison, who was the first black woman in space!
Forever is just another journey
Tomorrow, a stop along the way
Nichelle Nichols singing Beyond Antares. Rest in power, thank you for everything
Nichelle Nichols as Lt Uhura in Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Nichelle Nichols as Nyota Uhura on “Star Trek” (1968). Nichols was one of the 1st black women featured in a major television series. Her prominent supporting role as a bridge officer was unprecedented. Nichols was once tempted to leave the series; however, a conversation with Martin Luther King Jr. changed her mind. Rest in peace, beautiful. Thank you for breaking barriers & inspiring so many!
Nichelle Nichols as Lt Uhura
- Miss Uhura, your last sub-space log contained an error in the frequencies column. - Mr. Spock, sometimes I think if I hear that word ‘frequency’ once more, I’ll cry. - Cry?
FRIENDLY REMINDER THAT UHURA IS A GODDAMN ENGINEER, WHICH IS WHY SHE WEARS RED. SHE IS THE COMMS OFFICER BECAUSE SHE KNOWS HOW TO WORK THE EQUIVALENT OF THE SHIP’S HAM RADIO—THAT’S TECHNICAL WORK. SHE IS NOT KIRK’S SPACE SECRETARY.
And she speaks a bunch of languages and she’s so smart that when she lost her memory of everything, she learned it all again really quickly (with nurse chapel which was so cute)
Honey got skills and she’s a genius
And she knows how to play the Vulcan lyre too!
It looks like a giant ball-point pen that she’s using - but that looks like a real circuit board. (I’d say it’s a DEC board, from the form, but I sure wouldn’t bet on it.)
People forget that red is engineering and operations - it covers a lot of stuff that is mostly invisible on TV and in movies. All the maintenance people, especially.
Rest in Power
