some warmth for atsushi because he has suffered enough
i think one of the coolest things about atsushi is he DOESN'T have dazai on a pedestal. not really. like he's not stupid he knows dazai has done bad things (and sasses back at him manga atsushi you will forever be a legend). but he chooses to believe dazai is good Anyway.
because if dazai who did bad things when he was younger can't be redeemed then how could atsushi also be worthy of life?? which isn't atsushi being particularly fair to himself since he didn't have control of the tiger, but. if believing in dazai can help him get there subconsciously then good for him.
but also someone who knows dazai can be a massive shitlord and still choosing to go "look at my super cool mentor helping me do good things" its good for both of them. everybody benefits from this.
I think the scene at the end of Dead Apple with them both sums it up.
Dazai is about to explain his actions because he knows how it all looks.
And Atsushi just smiles and says yeah I know you were doing what you could to save us.
Dazai was seemingly working with the man who abused and tortured Atsushi as a child, the man who did all this to Yokohama.
He doesn't need to hear the reasoning behind his actions, because Atsushi trusts that Dazai was doing the right thing.
Dazai tries to deflect it, like what do I look like I'm overflowing with virtue to you?
And Atsushi instantly says yeah.
Atsushi sees Dazai as completely and utterly human.
That moment when Dazai’s about to explain is the most emotionally vulnerable we’ve seen him be since he distraughtly asked a dying Oda what he should do with his life to find meaning. There have been other moments of vulnerability — a lot them also involving Atsushi — but they were quick private moments (when he realizes he was tricked into leaving Atsushi open for Q) or were coming from a place of authority (warning Atsu about the danger of self-pity) or were him almost musing (the cemetery scene at the beginning of Dead Apple).
But at the end of Dead Apple, Dazai was worried about how Atsushi would view him after his false defection. Dazai trusts and cares about the people in his life, but Atsushi is the only person with whom he cares about his image. Even though he doesn’t feel worthy of the faith Atsushi puts in him, he still wants to be.

Dazai & Chuuya // The Camellia flower The symmetrical beauty and long-lasting quality of the flower have long been appreciated by young lovers as the token for expressing devotion to each other. In the Victorian age, red camellia flowers meant “you are the flame in my heart”. Giving the camellia flower to someone is saying “you are the love of my life”.
