A 33-year-old transgender Honduran woman who was part of the so-called refugee caravan has died after being detained by immigration authorities.

Immigration officials identified the woman as Jeffry Hernandez, but LGBTQ immigrant rights advocates with the Transgender Law Center said she was an asylum seeker named Roxana Hernández.

A representative with the group Pueblo Sin Fronteras, which organized the caravan, confirmed Hernández was a member of the caravan.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said in a statement that Hernández “applied for admission” at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in California on May 9, 2018.

“When she presented [herself at the port of entry] she was smiling [because] the government finally allowed her to seek asylum,” Nakai Flotte, an organizer with Diversidad Sin Fronteras, told Splinter. Flotte said Hernández had to wait two weeks before officials at the port of entry would admit her.

BuzzFeed reporter Adolfo Flores interviewed Hernández when she was traveling with the caravan. Hernández told BuzzFeed she was fleeing “transgender discrimination” and that MS-13 gang members who had gang raped her told her, “we don’t want you in this neighborhood, you fucking faggot.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers detained Hernández on May 9 and “determined that she had no status to legally enter the United States; she was processed for expedited removal,” a CBP spokesperson told Splinter.

“During her time in CBP custody, Ms. Hernandez received a medical evaluation from an off-site local medical facility and was cleared for travel and detention before being transferred to the custody of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations on May 13,” the spokesperson continued.

On May 16, Hernández was transferred to the Cibola County Correctional Center, a for-profit jail facility in Milan, New Mexico, where she was detained in a special unit for transgender detainees.

But the following day, Hernández was transferred to the Cibola General Hospital with symptoms of pneumonia, dehydration, and complications associated with HIV, according to ICE officials. She was then transferred to the Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque where she remained in intensive care until she was pronounced dead on May 25.

LGBTQ immigrant rights advocates are questioning the conditions Hernández was detained in while in CPB custody.

She was processed and held for 5 days in the dreaded ‘icebox’ - holding cells with extremely low temperatures - in U.S. Customs & Border Protection suffering cold, lack of adequate food or medical care, with the lights on 24 hours a day, under lock & key,” read a statement released on Tuesday night by Pueblo Sin Fronteras, and the immigrant rights groups Al Otro Lado and Diversidad Sin Fronteras.

The statement said Hernández “traveled over 2,000 miles through Mexican territory on foot, by train, by bus because her last aspiration and hope was to save her own life.”

“She always kept it to herself and focused on surviving and escaping violence,” Flotte, the organizer who made the trek across Mexico with Hernández, told Splinter. “She got sick during the icebox where they separated her from everyone else.”

A 2015 report from the American Immigration Council described the infamous “icebox” as holding cells without beds that “are extremely cold, frequently overcrowded, and routinely lacking in adequate food, water, and medical care.”

Some have asked me to make a post regarding gay men being rounded up in Chechnya. Now, let me just clarify that details are very slim because the government is denying this (obviously) and there are a lot of posts on tumblr with misinformation. So I’ll do as best I can here:

  • An independent Russian newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, and human rights activists have been providing this information. “In Chechnya, the command was given for a ‘prophylactic sweep’ and it went as far as real murders,” the Novaya Gazeta reported.
  • According to the newspaper, dozens of men between the ages of 16 and 50 have mysteriously disappeared off the streets. Reports say that authorities aided in these roundups by posing as men looking for dates online. They also say that some of these men are well known religious leaders and/or popular faces on local television.
  • The Russian LGBT Network has set up a hotline for those seeking help and evacuation from the region. They told the media that they have received reports of what’s been happening in these prisons. “Gay people have been detained and rounded up and we are working to evacuate people from the camps and some have now left the region. Those who have escaped said they are detained in the same room and people are kept altogether, around 30 or 40. They are tortured with electric currents and heavily beaten, sometimes to death,” Svetlana Zakharova from the Russian LGBT network said.
  • A spokesman for Ramzan Kadyrov, Chechnya’s leader, is claiming that the reports are “absolute lies and disinformation,” and said that “You cannot detain and persecute people who simply do not exist in the republic. If there were such people in Chechnya, the law-enforcement organs wouldn’t need to have anything to do with them because their relatives would send them somewhere from which there is no returning.” They are even claiming that these reports were nothing more than an April Fools joke because the Novaya Gazeta article was published on April 1st. The Kremlin is also denying any knowledge of these reports.
  • The Human Rights Watch in Moscow told the media that they’ve gained information regarding these attacks that include torture, humiliation, and at least three reports of murder.
  • Note that it’s very difficult to get much information on this because almost no independent journalists or rights activists are able to work in the region due to restrictions. A journalist from the Novaya Gazeta has spoken out against Kadyrov before and was murdered only days later.
  • A Chechen activist who claims to work on human rights in the republic (and works on Kadyrov’s human rights council) has denied the claims. She told a Russian radio station “In our Chechen society, any person who respects our traditions and culture will hunt down this kind of person without any help from authorities, and do everything to make sure that this kind of person does not exist in our society.”
  • Novaya Gazeta said they have been able to confirm their information with an “unprecedented large number of sources in the Interior Ministry of the Chechen Republic, in the administration of the head of the republic, the FSB Department for Chechnya, the Chechen prosecutor’s office finally local LGBT activists.” They are also saying that a former military headquarters is the site of the camp.

sourcesource. source. souce. source. and here’s the original Novaya Gazeta article. It is in Russian but it may be of interest to you if you can read it or your computer translates.

Adding some info I should have initially included:

The Russian LGBT Network is the group that has set up a hotline and offered to get LGBT people out of the region. I don’t know much of their specifics like I would on organizations here in America but they do provide information on their website to what they do. They also have the option to view their website in English and take the American dollar and the pound on their donations page.

As far as I can see there is no way to support the independent newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, that broke this news. However, you can follow Tanya Lokshina, who is the Russia program director and a senior researcher at Human Rights Watch based in Moscow. She has also been working to get this news exposed and their Moscow-based Human Rights Watch is has been one of the groups to confirm reports and talk to sources. You can donate to Human Rights Watch, however I don’t think you can specify where this money goes country-wise.

April 14th 2017 update: A man who was released back to his family has given more information on the experiences in these camps. Note that the article might be extremely triggering for some. Also note that the names in the article have been changed, and identifying details have been removed to protect the man, who has now fled the region and his family.

I keep seeing that post where the Westboro Baptist Church is holding anti-Trump signs and people are like “Hey something I agree with them on, not bad” or whatever. And let me just remind you that these people literally hate everyone and absolutely HATE the LGBTQ community, Jews, Muslims, women, etc. they’re racist and hateful and this is not the fucking time to act like they might be okay guys JUST because they spoke out against Trump.

And let me fucking tell you, they aren’t speaking out against Trump for the same reasons that you hate Trump. They don’t give a shit what he says or does to minority groups, they don’t care about all the horrible shit he’s planning to do. They literally do not support any leader but their God and they think Trump is evil because he has been divorced and remarried - two things they view as sinful. Like, they don’t give a shit about you and they’re just as evil as ever. Don’t start humanizing the fucks that protested the funerals of the Pulse shooting victims, the Sandy Hook victims, and the Charleston shooting victims with their “God Sent the Shooter,” bullshit.

Like the whole “You know Trump’s bad when even this assholes are against you,” argument is just… no.

They’re not criticizing Trump for his attacks against immigrants, refugees, scientists, women, etc. They’re not protesting him for reviving the construction of the Keystone and North Dakota Access pipelines, or for openly praising torture and war crimes. They don’t give a shit about any of it this, they literally protest anyone and anything based off their own fucked up reasons.

They’re not fucking “allies” and I can’t believe we have to fucking remind people that the Westboro Baptist Church is a hate group.

“Conversion therapy” is child abuse. There is no gray area. There is no wiggle room. The fuckers who practice it are abusers. The fuckers who send their children off to be “converted” are abusers. Assholes who say “I wouldn’t do it, but that’s their right as parents” are abuse apologists.

It’s literally torture? The entire intention of the process is to torture the kid until they develop a mental disorder that causes them to be repulsed by anything they are attracted to. There is nothing else to it.

[shown above] Ruhal Ahmed, a former Guantanamo Bay detainee, in an interview in which he discusses Omar Khadr. Ahmed stammers,
“I think he was a strong kid.
I think, you know, being much older, much older than him, I did feel that, sometimes, I needed to look out for him and I think so did the other prisoners around him feel the same. But obviously, being in Guantanamo, you can’t really look out for one another.
Uh, it’s, it’s, it’s difficult you know, today I’m here, and I’m, I’m thinking of, thinking of him and he’s still in prison and he’s still, still a kid. I don’t know really what I would say to him. It doesn’t seem, it doesn’t seem fair that he’s still there and, and I’m here.”
Khadr, a Canadian, was taken into US custody at the age of fifteen, tortured and refused medical attention because he wouldn’t attest to being a member of Al Qaeda, even though he was shot three times in the chest and had shrapnel embedded in his eyes and right shoulder. As a result, Khadr’s left eye is now permanently blind, the vision in his right eye is deteriorating, he develops severe pain in his right shoulder when the temperature drops, and he suffers from extreme nightmares.
Ahmed, who was imprisoned in the cell next to him for some time, reported that Khadr would return from interrogations (where he would be tortured) crying and would huddle in a corner of his cell with his blanket over his head.
Shafiq Rasul, another former Guantanamo Bay detainee, stated that although Khadr was forced to mature due to his harsh treatment and torture, he still had the mentality of a child. Guantanamo Bay’s Muslim chaplain James Yee confirmed this by reporting that Khadr had been given a Mickey Mouse book in a surprising act of kindness by one of his interrogators, and that he slept with it clutched to his (injured) chest. Muneer Ahmad, one of Khadr’s first attorneys, reported that at their first meeting at Guantanamo, Khadr asked for nothing other than colouring books, car magazines and pictures of big animals and played with the attorney’s ink pens and digital watch.
Khadr has been incarcerated at Guantanamo Bay since 2002, and is now 27 years old.

More heartbreaking news: While Khadr is now out of Guantanamo and in a Canadian maximum security prison (which is not much better), he is currently being sued by a US soldier and the wife of a US soldier who was killed while arresting/torturing Khadr. These people are suing him for fifty million dollars because, while carrying out an attack against Khadr as child, they were injured.

Please keep Khadr and all of the other victims of this torture in your hearts

"Danielle Susan Ruger", set this tortoise on fire and then threw him all over the street. I don’t have much information on it, but that one of her friend’s on Facebook saved this horrendous video to his phone before she deleted off of Facebook. Apparently, she’s from/located in Orange Park. Please, if you can in any way, report this person right away! She needs to pay for torturing this poor animal now.
