Canada’s Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister said the Manitoba government needs to step up and take responsibility when it comes to searching the Prairie Green Landfill for the bodies of two murdered Indigenous women. On Tuesday, Marc Miller said the Government of Canada is willing to play a significant role in the search; however, they can’t do it without the help of the Manitoba government as it’s the province’s jurisdiction. “It is pretty much impossible, logistically, to do that without the Government of Manitoba playing a central role in this,” he said. “And the premier has, in my view, abdicated her responsibility to step up.” [...]

The province has unveiled a survey aimed at identifying systemic racism in order to implement equitable access after hearing concerns from minority groups and Indigenous members of the community.
In June 2022, the Anti-Racism Data Act came into effect. Its aim is to enable the safe collection and "use of personal information for the purposes of identifying and eliminating systemic racism and advancing racial equality," according to the province.
Available in 15 different languages,  the province says the B.C. Demographic Survey is an opportunity for communities that feel left behind to express their concerns to help pave the way to more inclusive and accessible services. It asks questions around ethnicity, ancestry, and religious preferences, among other things.

“In Michigan, as the Detroit Free Press’s Nancy Kaffer noted, state lawmakers are pushing a plan that would require Medicaid recipients (with exceptions for the disabled, elderly, and a few other selected populations) to work or search for work at least 29 hours each week. If they fail to meet the work requirement, they could lose Medicaid coverage for a full year.

But the Michigan plan comes with a twist: People who live in counties with higher unemployment rates — above 8.5 percent — are exempted from the requirement. That is likely to lead in practice, as Kaffer observes, to rural whiter counties, where unemployment is higher, getting a break from these work requirements while urban areas with a higher share of black residents would still be subjected to them. Which means that black Medicaid enrollees would be more likely to lose their health insurance.

Ferguson, Missouri, is on the brink of a deal with the Justice Department that would reform its law enforcement’s practices, city officials told the New York Times on Wednesday. The deal “would require new training for police officers … improved record-keeping” and a way of making sure changes were made.

for real. reading the history of the laws (the many laws) written to keep blacks away from anything empowering is quite dizzying and housing discrimination was a big one. laws keeping and taking land from blacks go way back (for example) and as society progressed, it morphed to fit the times. nowadays it’s housing discrimination and it’s rampant

Shonda Rhimes needs to make a show for Black kids and let him star.

How ironic. I was just talking about this.

This shit is serious. Gentrification is an issue. Housing discrimination is real.

True stories: -A Black family moving into a suburban neighborhood actually would lower the prices of homes. Because all the White people would try to move out as soon as possible. -If the new suburb was next to a non-White neighborhood, a fence could be put up “for safety” to instantly raise property values. -Have you heard the term redline/-ing? It refers to the practice of corporations color coding a region and not investing in or refusing service to those from certain (red) areas. These were usually poor Black neighborhoods. This included refusing those in redlined areas access to jobs, loans, medical care, etc. -Many older developments that were predominately home to poor PoC were destroyed with the promise of a new development or a suburb. This almost never happened and left the country with a shortage of affordable housing that still exists today. -“Between 1934 and 1962, the federal government backed $120 billion of home loans. More than 98% went to whites. Of the 350,000 new homes built with federal support in northern California between 1946 and 1960, fewer than 100 went to African Americans.” http://newsreel.org/guides/race/whiteadv.htm

White people whose family has owned homes since the mid 20th century: The financial success and safety of our families and ourselves is completely based on racism. Never forget that.

This needs more notes. People need to know just how this society made it a point at every turn to hold (and still hold today) Black people down for the benefit of whites.

A huge part of white wealth was created through real estate. A sector that Black people were systematically kept out of. A sector now where Black people are still preyed upon.

some context for why the scotus decision on the disparate impact portion of the fair housing act was/is so important.

“Between 1934 and 1962, the federal government backed $120 billion of home loans. More than 98% went to whites. Of the 350,000 new homes built with federal support in northern California between 1946 and 1960, fewer than 100 went to African Americans.” This one is an illustration of how someone of this generation can be currently benefitting from the whiteness of their ancestors; pure white privilege in action.

White Man from San Diego Waves Gun Around Small Children In Confrontation With Police and Is Taken Into Custody Alive.

This white man walked towards the police with a gun pointed at them and they spend half an hour talking to him before they shoot him one time. If he had been a black man, they would’ve shot him dead. Before you police apologists claim this man has a history of mental illness (he does) that’s why the police was lenient,  Ezell Ford, a mentally ill black man, was recently killed by the LAPD.

Let’s not forget the twelve year old who was killed Saturday, November 21st in a park for having a BB gun and cops shot him dead when he had his hands in the air. RIP Tamir Rice. #blacklivesmatter
