Gaza has ‘a dystopian landscape of ruined buildings and physical infrastructure - with the £3.3 billion reconstruction effort promised after the conflict having so far failed to get off the ground. Shejaiya, scene of some of the worst violence, looks little different from its shattered appearance last summer immediately after Israel’s ground offensive. It makes for a grim vista that has mental health professionals fearing a “lost generation” of Gazan children. “The recent war surpassed the combined number of deaths and injuries from all the previous conflicts and the impact that is having on the children of Gaza and their future looks absolutely bleak”’

Yeah, and the ship sailed from Kolkata in Bengal, which suffered a genocidal famine in WWII because the British were extracting so much capital from it. And who got the recovered silver in the end? The fucking British government.

as some of you may know, nicki minaj recently released a lyric video for her single “only” featuring drake, lil wayne, and chris brown (which can be found here). upon watching this video, it becomes disturbingly obvious that the imagery is uncannily reminiscent of the nazi regime, especially during the holocaust. on the left are the images from nicki’s video, and on the right are actual images from/relating to the nazism during the holocaust.

although there has been some buzz about this video, it is not nearly enough. i have seen various people making excuses, saying that she was only trying to portray a dictatorship — understandable, but the imagery used was certainly not appropriate or necessary. there is a way to portray power and dictatorship without using the holocaust. it is extremely problematic and offensive, no matter which way you look at it. a young money symbol that is blatantly supposed to look like a swastika? uniforms that resemble those of the SS (nazi police)? these images are completely disgusting and certainly not appropriate for nicki (or drake, lil wayne, and chris brown) to use.

in no way, shape, or form am i hating on nicki; i’ve been a fan of hers for awhile, but that doesn’t mean her problematic behavior should be excused. don’t let this go without an apology. nicki needs to be aware of the fact that this video is wrong and has already offended a large amount of people. tweet her, comment on the video, let her know that she made a mistake. there is no need to bash her, but there is a need to be a critical fan.

IT IS NOT JUST ANTISEMITISM HOW MANY FUCKING TIMES DO RROMANI PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY THIS? 2 million Rromani people died in the holocaust, along with millions of disabled folks, LGBTQIA folks, and other people of color. I am so sick of seeing people on my dash erasing my family and millions of other people who were murdered by Nazis. And this isn’t just in regards to this video; this happens time and time again, even in official government discussions of the holocaust. My people are not some footnote.

It is important to remember people with Down syndrome and other intellectual and developmental disabilities were a key target in the eugenics movement in the United States – which influenced Hitler’s first mass murders under the Aktion-T4 program in 1939. Through that program, Hitler murdered an estimated 200,000 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, a large number being people with Down syndrome. It is important to remember up until 1984 doctors in the United States refused to provide lifesaving procedures to people with Down syndrome such as surgeries related to the heart. Even today, there are people with Down syndrome dying in their 30s or 40s simply because a doctor refused to perform the heart surgery when they were infants. It is important to remember there were numerous unprosecuted cases wherein doctors and fathers conspired and told mothers of newborns with Down syndrome that their babies had died, when in fact, those babies were quickly and quietly placed in inhumane institutions. It is important to remember people with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities were systematically physically and sexually abused through forced sterilization – by 1981, more than 60,000 people with disabilities had been violated in this manner. It is important to remember there were doctors as late as the 1980s who categorized feeding a baby with Down syndrome as a “lifesaving procedure” and proceeded to starve babies to death with Down syndrome and other intellectual and developmental disabilities until all 50 state governors created legislation to ban this horrific practice. It is important to remember children with Down syndrome and other intellectual and developmental disabilities living in institutions were infected en masse in experiments related to vaccine discovery. It is important for us to remember that our friends and family members with Down syndrome deserve fundamental human and civil rights. Only within this context can we prevent atrocities from surfacing again and prevent discrimination of all forms from happening now.
