Pay attention, 2014 Mad Men: This little girl is holding a LEGO set. The LEGOs are not pink or “made for girls.” She isn’t even wearing pink. The copy is about “younger children” who “build for fun.” Not just “girls” who build. ALL KIDS.
In an age when little girls and boys are treated as though they are two entirely different species by toy marketers, this 1981 ad for LEGO — one of our favorite images ever — issues an important reminder.

This is my favorite advertisement. Also, a short story about sexist parenting with LEGOS. I work at a toy store that sells thousands of dollars of legos and I’ve seen time and time again parents refusing to buy blue box legos for girls and refusing to buy pink box legos for boys even when they ask for them. One girl came in with her parents and she wanted LEGO CITY because it was her birthday and they wanted to buy her gift with her at the store. [LEGO CITY is a LEGO series that lets a child build train stations, firetrucks, passenger ships, space exploration vehicles, drawbridges, garbage disposal trucks, basically anything related to the running of a city and it is not a gender based toy.] I showed them the LEGO CITY, but the mom told the child over and over “No, this is for boys you can’t get that” and eventually, she made the little girl choose a LEGO Disney Cinderella Castle instead because it was “more appropriate”. Even after I pointed out that every box has female and male LEGO people because the toy is meant for both boys and girls, she refused because it looked like a “boy” toy. I’ve had many occasions where a girl will be drawn to the LEGO CITY series only for the parents to come to me and ask  “Where are the GIRLS Legos, you know, princesses and stuff. I’m not buying her this sort of thing” and it makes me so, so, so, so, sad every time because I can already imagine the types of values in education and career choices the parents will be scolding child for wanting in the future when they aren’t even allowed to play with anything blue.  Let girls be kids without all the forced gender stereotyping, dammit.

You know what little girls could grow up to be? Architects, engineers, builders.

You know what little girls cannot ever be, no matter what they do in life? A princess.

We sell real life careers to little boys, but to girls we sell lies and fantasy. Then we have the gall to say that girls ‘choose’ careers that earn them less, that girls just aren’t interested in STEM fields, that girls are stupid for pursuing frivolous nonsense, etc. etc.

This is gender in action. Not nature, but socialization.

That last comment especially 👏🏻👏🏻

As a female architect I approve this message.

I loved LEGO when I was little, and it was an activity I enjoyed with both my sister and my two brothers. It galls me how the brand was marketed so heavily to boys in the 80s and 90s, because now those kids are adults and remember it as ‘something for boys’ and keep it away from their girls. Marketing can do damage for *generations*, not just in the immediate short term.

GENDER IN ACTION what a great fucking way of putting it

I was just thinking about this post/ad the other day. I’ve reblogged it before, and there’s a version that links to an interview with the little girl in the picture about her memories of the photo shoot. It’s all very girl-positive and how gendering toys is terrible, and for the most part, I agree. There’s no such thing as boys’ toys and girls’ toys. Or there shouldn’t be.

The thing that occurred to me about this ad, though - it’s not really breaking any gender barriers. The little girl in the picture? She’s dressed like a boy. She’s not wearing pink. Her hair’s not in ringlets. She hasn’t built what could obviously be called a princess castle. If you looked fast, you’d probably think she was a boy (until you noticed the braids).

So yeah, maybe this ad is saying, “Hey, girls can play with Lego too!” Except, not really. Because what it’s actually saying is, “Hey, girls who are actually tomboys can play with Lego too!”

I’m just saying - I think it would have been way more powerful if you’d had a girl in pink and ruffles and ringlets building space ships and skyscrapers and King Arthur’s castle. That it’s possible to be both girly - and want to do those things. This ad? Ain’t showing that.

Okay, so the thing i’m having a problem with here is that this little girl is NOT dressed like a boy, she’s dressed like a little girl at play in 1981.

Girls’ clothes in 1981 were not limited to various shades of pink and purple but ran the full spectrum of colors. They were also expected to stand up to the wear and tear of regular play (which in 1981 meant running around outdoors). Ruffles and the like existed but those clothes were fancy, meant for occasions or events like church and holidays, not everyday wear.

For example, here is a photo of my brother and i in 1983 wearing our everyday clothes

I am five years old here. At this time, my room was painted pink, i had what i called my princess dress, and my Barbie was the one that came with an all-pink wardrobe. At that time in my life i was absolutely NOT considered a tomboy; i was a typical little girl.

To your modern eyes, inundated with the sharply gendered clothing of today, the girl in the ad didn’t even read as a girl whereas in 1981, she did. And i’m wondering who is in the more constrictive box, girls then or girls now?

Also i saw these from the same campaign and they are adorable!

How terrible is it to know that as a society we’ve probably gotten worse with pushing gender norms on kids instead of better.

When I was in uni in one of my soc classes we read an excerpt from The Beauty Myth which talked about this, how when women started gaining more political/social/financial power in society the patriarchal started lashing back by buckling down on beauty standards and enforcing femininity. Beauty standards and the expectation for girls and women to be feminine has definitely gotten worse the past few decades as direct retaliation against women and girls for gaining more power, it’s a way to keep women and girls in “their place” in one way while they’re reaching for progress in other areas. If you’re interested in learning more about this phenomenon, I suggest giving The Beauty Myth a read

Celebrating fatherhood with official paternity leave policies challenges traditional gender roles and empowers parents in the workplace. It’s one of those rare issues where men’s rights activists and feminists can find common ground with a mutually beneficial cause. It even has an impact on LGBTQ equality.

This man took shotgun pellets for women protesting the wearing of hijabs after the suspicious death of a twenty-two year old woman arrested by morality police in Iran for wearing her hijab "improperly" (some strands of her hair had escaped from under it). Women have taken to the streets to protest by burning their hijabs and cutting their hair short. Currently internet access in Iran is cut off and Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram are removing posts about the protests.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the case of an alleged sexual assault victim who was turned away from a Fredericton emergency room last month is “horrific” and illustrates the strain on the health-care system across the country.
His heart goes out to the 26-year-old woman and those supporting her, he told reporters in St. Andrews Tuesday, pledging continued discussions with premiers to improve the system.
“This is something we take incredibly seriously.”
On Monday, CBC News reported the woman went to the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital ER to get a sexual assault forensic examination performed and was told to schedule an appointment for the next day because no trained nurse was available.
The woman, whom CBC News is not naming, said she was still in shock after being told to go home overnight, not shower or change, and to use the bathroom as little as possible in order to help preserve any evidence.

Megan Johnston is on a mission to put up pro-abortion rights billboards in Saskatchewan. She said the movement to end the stigma and normalize abortion is quickly gaining traction in the province.
“The majority, large majority, of our province is of the belief that abortion is health care and we’re done being quiet,” said Johnston, who is a registered psychiatric nurse living in Moosomin, Sask.
Johnston was inspired during a long-weekend trip where she spent nine hours on Saskatchewan roads. The province is known for its classic views of canola fields and grain elevators, but another common sight is the many anti-abortion billboards along highways.
She was angered by the messages shaming people who have had or will have abortions, and expressed those feelings to her friends.
“They seem to have such a presence and such a loud voice in our province, and I just said ‘why can’t we put up pro-abortion billboards?’”
She said her friends responded with “Why not?”
Johnston mulled over the idea and sought advice from her grandmother, a retired registered nurse. She pitched the idea of establishing a non-profit organization to pay for pro-abortion rights billboards to her grandma.
“She was silent for a second, and then she was like, 'well, it’s about damn time someone did that.’”

Did you know? The reason citation in APA use only initials and not full names is because some women ran an experiment. They submitted some articles they’d written to a journal and the articles were rejected. They changed nothing about the articles except the authors’ names, which they changed to male names, and resubmitted them. The articles were accepted.

Niezsche has some pretty hateful things to say as well. It is extremely hard to find a well-respected, long-revered philosopher who didn’t have horrible things to say about women. These men are considered geniuses, but never even bothered to question the gender norms and misogyny of their time. This isn't even touching on the horrible things Freud had to say about women.

A Commons committee that spent over a year looking at economic barriers facing Canadian women has released a sweeping list of recommendations it believes could provide a path toward full equality for women.
The standing committee on the status of women tabled its report Thursday following a 15-month study of women’s economic security.
It found women’s employment and wage potential are being undermined in Canada by a wide variety of systemic and structural barriers, including bias, gender-based violence, the wage gap and a lack of adequate access to child care.

We Set Up A Hotline to Help You Reject Creepy Men

Remember the old reject hotline number? Well we have created our own! Sometimes at The Mary Sue we get messages and comments from our readers about feeling unsafe in certain situations. At times, our readers have told us, even, that they direct men who have bothered them to our site or our Facebook. With that in mind, we decided to do more. Hopefully this helps, and teaches a lesson.

I’m sick of hyper competent female characters with man-child leads who still manage to save the day (by being themselves)

give me a messed up female lead who’s super power is sometimes getting drunk and sprouting lighter fluid from her hands (her s/o is a flame demon)

give me a female lead who tries to rob banks with an uber

give me a female lead who hasn’t slept in 3 days and keeps hearing colors, she saves the day anyway by being the loser who solves sudoku puzzles

give me female assassins with a sense of humor, she yells ‘KILL MODE’ in a robot voice and then laughs when her colleagues almost wet themselves

Give me hyper-literal Shakespeare enthusiasts who don’t understand Shakespeare, she time travels and saves the universe through bad 90s rap music

Give me trash knights who are afraid of the dark, she’s awkward in front of girls but goes to save the princess anyway

Give me character-driven pieces, give me flawed but likable, give me powerful losers, down with girl power up with fun

guys get to be goofy, girls get to suffer and call that character development

Graphic images depicting bloodied and dismembered fetuses have been appearing on giant placards all over downtown Toronto and on flyers in people’s mailboxes, and now some politicians are taking a stand against them.
Sarah Doucette, a city councillor in the city’s west end, has received hundreds of complaints from upset residents. She calls the images “disturbing” and says she plans to propose a bylaw to ban the gruesome anti-abortion signs.
“These are big blown up images. There’s blood, there’s gore, there’s a lot of things there which should not be in people’s faces on their local street,” said Doucette.
The Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform (CCBR) is the Calgary-based organization behind the protests and flyers.
This summer its members have been seen on major intersections like Yonge and College streets, standing on all four corners with placards. The group also hands out pamphlets on the street.
