people always talk about leaving comments on ao3 like it's a nice thing to do, or the best way to encourage writers to keep writing, or overall like it's how you Do Your Part in fandom

and yeah, all those things are true, but having spent the past few months leaving enthusiastic comments on as many things as i can, i have a different perspective

you should leave comments on fics because it's fun

taking the time to stop and focus on what i like about a story has made me way more aware of what's going on in stories and what i like about them. there's bit more actual comprehension and appreciation and not just beaming content into my eyes to fill time

i like noticing cool little things in fics, or riffing on funny events. i've never been very good at speculating or picking apart characters, but sometimes something clicks and it rocks.

and of course it's pretty nice when you get a response and it's clear you've made another person happy

so yeah, you should leave comments for your own sake, too. it makes reading better!

sometimes the best fanfics are written by middle aged adults with years of writing experience who simply know how to craft a good story. but also sometimes the best fanfics are written by a sixteen year old girl with something deeply wrong with her

Don’t Add Fanfiction To Your Goodreads Shelf

Hi folks, I know some of you like to use Goodreads to track all your reading and don’t want to distinguish between books and fanfiction.

I am, however, begging you not to do this. It is extremely jarring and disconcerting to be a fic author and find your works somewhere in the wild where you did not personally put them. Fics are not books, are not published in the same way as books, and exist in a precarious legal space.

Please don’t attempt to elide the separation that exists between fandom and the world of official publishing.

Well this is much nicer than how I said it 🤣

[ID: tweet from @westiectweets — “PSA: Don’t Fucking Add Fic to Goodreads What the Fuck”]

update to add:

if you are a fic author and you find your fic on Goodreads, you can get it removed!

Here’s how:

  1. First, you gotta go to Goodreads support Contact Us page. Fill out the form as follows:
  2. What can we help you with? - Book records: adding or editing
  3. What device were you using? - this answer doesn’t matter
  4. Are you reaching out as a publisher, author, neither, or both? - Author
  5. What does your inquiry relate to? fanfiction recorded as book
  6. In the main body of the question, include the link(s) to the Goodreads record(s) for your fic(s)
  7. Hit submit!
  8. Someone should contact you pretty fast; I got a reply within a couple hours, even though it was a Sunday afternoon. They wanted me to confirm that it was a fanfic and asked me to provide proof of authorship which was kinda weird to answer but I was like “uhhh my tumblr is the same handle as my ao3 does that count?” and that seemed to go over just fine.
  9. Once they say they’ve deleted the records it should no longer be searchable although for whatever reason the direct links apparently still work. That’s Amazon for ya I guess.

I hope this helps some of my fellow fic authors!

hey guys please reblog this version

I’ve seen multiple people reblogging the original post with tags saying how they have struggled to get their fics taken down off Goodreads & I want folks to know that it IS possible

i might elaborate later but fanfic replies literally develop writer’s metacognition and make them better writers

so, Metacognition is the practice of thinking about thinking or identifying one’s cognitive process . in essence, metacognition is understanding how you prepare for academic challenges, exams, or tasks, and then being able to reflect on whether you did well, you prepared adequately, and what was most effective. in a writing setting, this type of self-awareness helps you transfer skills in writing, say, fanfiction into writing academically, competitively and professionally.

here’s an article from brown university on the subject i’ll discuss further. there are 3 parts of practicing metacognition identified in this article: planning, monitoring, and evaluation. how might this look like for a fanfic writer?

planning: asking oneself ‘what is my goal?’ ‘what strategies should i use to meet that goal?’ ‘how much time/length do i need to meet my goal?’. so maybe my goal is to write a meet cute where two characters kiss. i’ll need to use a perspective, an upbeat tone, and forward characterization to do this. it’ll probably take 5000 words and two days to write.

monitoring: asking oneself: is my story making sense? am i reaching my goal, or do i need to summarize more succinctly to keep it to 5k? maybe you started with a lot of exposition and now you’re 6k in and the characters haven’t met yet. what went wrong/changed? is it ok that it changed or did you not realize it got away from you? what now?

evaluation: asking oneself: did i reach my goal? was it effective? what would i change next time?

this is where comments come in

it is incredibly difficult to evaluate yourself. comments like “i love this!” actually do begin to touch on the evaluation step of metacognition. it means, in general, the writer is on the right track. comments like “i loved the dialogue between x and y” or “the emotions of this section really hit me” begin to answer the questions of was it effective, did i reach my goal and conversely answer what would i change next time (by adding more of whatever was specified as working well). HYPER SPECIFIC comments, like analyzing the story between the lines or pasting in a line that you really liked and explaining why, is like jet fuel for the metacognition process and i’m not exaggerating. specifically pointing out what was effective and why is incredibly useful

i can straight up credit my writing style to all of my friends and readers who have given incredibly detailed comments. when i found a community who gave feedback like that, my writing improved a thousand times faster than before. so! i guess what i’m saying is give feedback! it goes so much further than you realize!

idk if this is controversial or not, but I really like when non-professional writing like fic has hints of author bleedthrough when it comes to like, what different people assume is common knowledge. Like sometimes I’ll be reading a fic and it’ll just be obvious that the person writing it is either obsessed with medicine or has been to medical school, because they’ll use terms that are just a shade too technical without explaining them. It’s never the super specific stuff that they’d know other people are unaware of, it’s always the things that once you’ve known it for a while you forget it’s niche knowledge. It’s fun because as a fanfic reader it reminds me of how this is a fun hobby community, where everyone has their own thing going on outside of fandom. Everyone’s got their own specialties and they can’t help but write that into their work sometimes

…well this post sure took off

I know Tumblr really hates the term "fandom mom" (and rightfully so for how many notable bnf authors abused it), but due to it looking like FF.net is going down, I've spent the last 24 hours rescuing old Star Wars fic from several old friends no longer alive to do so, and I'm having so many emotions.

These women were my fandom moms. They realized I was a young teen unsupervised online and told me the lay of the land and not to interact with anything or anyone that made me uncomfortable, including them. They encouraged me to write for myself, even if I never posted it. N was especially important to me (uuuugh not looking forward to editing that scene), and her fic was the first I backed up and then sent all of it in an email to her husband.

I'm not sure what a polite 82-year-old southern gentleman is going to do with roughly 300,000k of retro Star Wars whump, crack, and smut, but he's got it.

Meanwhile, I'm a sobbing wreck as I work my way through a bunch of Skytilles fanfic. Not because of the fics themselves, but the 'reviews.' It's seeing all those old names bantering and poking fun in the comments. Like ghosts in the machine. Except now the machine is going down, and soon there won't even be echoes.

I'm screen-capping them for myself. I'm not sure what I'll do with the other fics. Maybe I'll orphan them on Ao3 with their usernames credited.

Also, Genie, I don't know if you still have my blog on RSS, but if you do, drop me an email. I've got your fics, you old boot 💖. (P.S. please do not be dead. But if you are, come haunt me.)

i wrote a short taz/homestuck crossover back in 2018, just the IPRE crew running into Earth C, and obviously it’s not up to my current standards but i’m still not sure i’ll ever write a joke funnier than this one

DP x DC prompt where Danny winds up in Gotham and, after expressing that he’s all alone and just wandering the city aimlessly, he finds himself adopted by Bruce– as Phantom.

Because if you’ve already adopted a bunch of kids, why not throw a ghost into the mix?

Danny just goes along with it, nervous but not really having any other options. If Bruce Wayne wants to adopt a ghost and feed him, why not humor the man? If they figure out he’s not actually a full ghost, he can always skip town and they’ll never see him again.

Only… Danny’s not sure how he keeps up the charade as long as he does. The moment he finds out he’s not only been adopted by Bruce Wayne, but the Batman, Danny’s just waiting for the inevitable. Surely, Batman will eventually find out who he is.

But it just… doesn’t happen. The family doesn’t really have any reason to assume that a ghost is somehow still alive. They assumed he might be a meta at first, but the kid literally has no pulse and doesn’t breathe. And sure, Danny disappears sometimes (to sleep) and it’s a little weird he eats– but he also speaks in tongues and can fly through the ceiling, so what do they know? Constantine’s been no help, claiming he “doesn’t want to touch this situation with a ten foot pole”, so they’re just sort of figuring out ghost brother shenanigans on the fly.

They’re more curious who Danny was while living, but (due to a mixture of ghostly interference in Amity, Tucker purging files, the GIW fucking with Amity Park’s exposure to the outside world, and Danny giving them no answers), the bats haven’t been able to find jackshit about Phantom and it’s a bit of a sore spot where egos are concerned. There’s a secret race going on to find info on Phantom first. Danny is aware of it and thinks it’s very endearing and funny. He also desperately wants one of them to succeed already.

The longer it takes for them to (not) figure it out, Danny gets more and more annoyed. At the very start he wanted to keep his identity a secret– new place, new people, how was he supposed to know how they’d react?– but he quickly grew enamored with the family and now trusts them. Besides, they’ve already accepted him as a ghost so, really, what’s there to lose? He’s pretty sure one of his new brothers is like ¼ ghost anyway.

Now Danny’s just been waiting– begging– for them to figure it out. He could just tell them. It would be so easy, but god he’s so committed to this now. Why is this taking so long.

It really starts to come to a head once the family develops non-ghost related nicknames for Danny. Jason in particular likes to joke about how Danny has severely broken the “blue-eyed, black-haired” mold and gives him nicknames like “Wildcard”, “Dove”, and “Uno Reverse”.

Danny is about ready to snap.

One day, a few of them are about to head out on a mission and Danny asks to tag along. Jason jokingly says, “Sorry Dove, black hair club only.”

Danny just transforms on the spot, keeping his face comically neutral (as much as he can while watching his new family have a collective breakdown.)

“How about now?”

DP x DC prompt where Batman employees the help of Constantine to fight a new enemy destroying his computers and vehicles (it’s Technus).

Constantine decides to summon Phantom, having heard of the ghost hero and thinking this might be one of his rogues based on descriptions.

Danny gets summoned in his pajamas and while Batman and Constantine assume there Has to be some sort of mistake, Danny’s mind is running on two days of no sleep and is in a Very different place.

Danny just takes one look at the professional hero, another look down at his pajamas (why did it have to be the Batman ones oh god no), and gets so embarrassed that he just— leaves.

Just turns invisible, and peaces the fuck out of there.

Trying to hide the fact that the kid they summoned isn’t just a normal kid? Naw, that’s not important right now. How about trying to hide how fucking embarrassing it is to look Batman dead in the eye while wearing Batman-themed pajamas that are three inches too short in the legs? What a first impression.

Danny doesn’t even register that he saw the Batcave’s location and just outed his powers until he’s already outside of Gotham city limits.

Between still needing to fight Technus, and now having a new and confusing person of interest, Constantine just repeats the summon to see what happens. Either they get Phantom, or Bruce gets a potential new adoptee. Doesn’t seem like much of a loss either way.

"I wish ao3 would let me-"

It probably does, you just gotta learn how to do it.

"I wanna see fics for only my opt"

Go to either fandom tag or your ships tag, (if you're doing fandom tag you have to add your ship in the 'relationship' section),go to fliters (mobile) or the right hand side (desktop), go to the 'search within results' area and put in otp:true just like that click 'sort and filter' And it'll pull up all fics with just your otp.

(EDIT: if you wanna do this but still have other parings try otp:false instead of otp:true)

"I wanna sort by _____ not 'Date updated'"

Go to 'filters' or right, theirs a drop down and you can change it to 'author' 'title' 'date posted' ect their are more options. Pick one, click 'sort and filter'

"I don't wanna see /reader"

Filter or Right, go to 'search within results' type in -/reader like that, click 'sort and filter'. No more /reader

"I don't want explicit works"

You know where we're going Right or filter. 'Exclude' section. 'Ratings' click the box that says 'explicit'

Obviously if people don't tag shit correctly it's not gonna work but yeah you just gotta learn how the tagging works. For better tutorials go to TikTok and search 'ao3 tutorials' you can do just about everything.

Hey, AO3 folks (and fanfic writers elsewhere)... if you see this offer, RUN AWAY FROM IT. IT’S POISON.

Please read this twitter thread and then stay FAR AWAY from the people being described…

The tl:dr; version: These people want you to “file the serial numbers off” your fanfic and publish it with them.

The catch: If the IP owners ever come after you, you’re on your own… and you have to pay the publisher damages! (Not to mention the IP owner…)

Also: their advances are CRAP. Also: Your advance (such as it is) is obtained by crowdfunding. WTF!!!

So:

AVOID AVOID AVOID. Dear sweet THOTH on his e-scooter, stay away from these people.

ETA: Victoria Strauss of Writer Beware has looked at the contract and declared it “completely incoherent and inadequate”.

So, honestly… AVOID.

Yiikes

@thebibliosphere Worth boosting?

Yep. I saw it on Twitter yesterday and the contract is genuinely bonkers. Avoid at all costs.

sometimes i need to remind myself that i'm writing fanfiction for free and i'm allowed to have a shitty sentence or two

so many of my fics have remained buried in my drafts because i wrote the cool scenes first and then didn’t have “connective tissue”. but i’m freeing myself from that and just adding shitty “and then a week passed” or “they got to their destination” connections and just posting them and it’s so! freeing! try it!

Honestly, i like often see writers being frustrated because they have the "boring" scenes to write and it got me thinking. I just genuinely do not write the boring scenes. If they're boring to me, they will be boring to the reader. The reader doesn't need to spend every second with the characters. You can jump ahead or move scenes quickly. Just note the passage and the new area. Good pacing needs you to do this. Cut the gristle. Published books do this. This is a time-honored tradition in books, shows, movies, everything!
