A literal “once in a lifetime” shot for a #REDInstead #AutismAcceptance photoshoot...

The way I do selfies is I actually set my camera to run video, move through my poses and then take screenshots. It makes it go smoother than having to run over, set the timer, run back, hope I’m in position and check the camera to see how the photo looks and then discover it’s super blurry when it’s on my computer later. Sometimes the shot I pick out is an “in between” where I’m moving from one position to the next and it looks good.

I was doing one of my photoshoots and the phone kept ringing, which was a major and annoying distraction. Some of it was actual phone calls and the rest was my dad making the phone ring by not pushing the hangup button properly. He’ll push the green pickup button instead, then push the red one, and that leaves the second line open. The phone will ring to remind you that you left a line open so you don’t hang up if somebody’s on call waiting. My instinct when that happens is to grab the phone and see who’s still on the line. 

So the phone kept interrupting me every time I was about to hold up my paper sign and get in position. My phone is obnoxious and I startle every time, so you can imagine how frustrated I get if the phone rings a dozen times in a short period.

After the umpteenth interruption, I snapped and had a meltdown. I bit myself. I forgot which sign I had in my hand, but I held it up because I went into “screw it” mode where I snottily do what I was intending to do out of frustration.

This will never happen like this again because the stars will never align like this again. That damn ringing phone gave me the best shot I’ll ever have for the #REDInstead #AutismAcceptance movement.

Since I know somebody somewhere is going to make fun of this– it’s going to say everything about you and nothing about me. I’d like to see you be your authentic self without hiding behind anonymity or an internet toughie persona.

Autismspeaks uses shock and pity to raise funds for “research”. It doesn’t give autism a voice, it harms and fuels stereotypes.

I would wish for Autism Speaks to disappear forever. I would wish for all autistic people everywhere to have the right support for their needs. And then I would wish for my mom to get a new car that won’t turn into junk two years later.

50 Cent, As a black autistic person, I accept your apology for mocking a young autistic employee live on Instagram. However, you screwed things up when you hastily donated to Autism Speaks with little to no research on the company. I understand you want to contribute to a good cause as a sign that you want to spread autism awareness. But donating to Autism $peaks is not the way to do it. They do not stand for autism acceptance and empowering the autistic community. A$ seeks to cure autism and only make money to advertise how tragic autism is. Instead, you should have gone to organizations such as The Autistic Self Advocacy Network or Autism Women’s Network. Organizations that promotes accepting autistic people, respecting autistic people, integrating autistic people into the community, and helping autistic people reach their potential in school, workplace, social world, etc. Encourage your fellow celebrities to donate to such organizations, not Autism Speaks. In the meantime, I suggest you get to know autistic people, especially activists and advocates like Lydia Brown, Morenike Oniawu, Ari Ne'eman, Alexis Tolliver, Finn Gardiner, Jackie Pilgrim, and much more amazing people in the autism community. Lighting it up blue harms autistic people. Ignoring autistic people who say it’s harmful is a willful choice to perpetuate ableism.

No matter what Autism Speaks and all its supporters say...

You are not broken and anyone who says you are is wrong.

You are not defective and nobody has a right to say you are.

You are not a burden and anyone who says otherwise is being ableist.

You are not broken or made wrong and this includes autistic people who are also trans or nb or dealing with dysphoria.

You are not a crisis for existing because a crisis would be you not existing at all.

You are not an epidemic and whoever says you are can shove it where the sun doesn’t shine.

You are not diseased because autism isn’t a disease, it’s a different operating system.

You are you and you are perfect at being you.

I accept you just the way you are right now and I love you very much.
