"A nationwide shortage of the abortion pill is expected next week — just months after previous shortage of the drug forced some patients to get surgical abortions instead.

"When our hands are tied, it's really frustrating to not be able to give the standard of care," said Dr. Emily Stuart, an abortion provider on Vancouver Island.

The abortion pill, known as Mifegymiso, first became available in Canada in 2017 as an alternative to surgical abortions.

It greatly opened up abortion access since the drug can be prescribed by a family doctor and provided by a pharmacy up to 10 weeks into a pregnancy. Mifegymiso is not the same as the so-called Plan B or "morning after" pill, which is an emergency contraception medication taken within 72 hours of sex to prevent pregnancy.

Linepharma, the sole supplier of the abortion pill in Canada, blames delivery delays, manufacturing constraints and shortages of the active ingredients used to make the drug.

It said it expects the shortage to begin Feb. 20 and last for two weeks, until March 6."

Megan Johnston is on a mission to put up pro-abortion rights billboards in Saskatchewan. She said the movement to end the stigma and normalize abortion is quickly gaining traction in the province.
“The majority, large majority, of our province is of the belief that abortion is health care and we’re done being quiet,” said Johnston, who is a registered psychiatric nurse living in Moosomin, Sask.
Johnston was inspired during a long-weekend trip where she spent nine hours on Saskatchewan roads. The province is known for its classic views of canola fields and grain elevators, but another common sight is the many anti-abortion billboards along highways.
She was angered by the messages shaming people who have had or will have abortions, and expressed those feelings to her friends.
“They seem to have such a presence and such a loud voice in our province, and I just said ‘why can’t we put up pro-abortion billboards?’”
She said her friends responded with “Why not?”
Johnston mulled over the idea and sought advice from her grandmother, a retired registered nurse. She pitched the idea of establishing a non-profit organization to pay for pro-abortion rights billboards to her grandma.
“She was silent for a second, and then she was like, 'well, it’s about damn time someone did that.’”

Companies generally have to respond to a valid warrant, although they can take care to ensure that it really is valid, and fight it if not. But the best way to protect your users is to minimize the data you collect, delete what you do collect whenever possible, and encrypt private messages end-to-end as a default. DON’T BUILD IT, DON’T KEEP IT, AND THE COPS WON’T COME FOR IT. And if your business model depends on more aggressive surveillance, maybe you need a new business model.

UK government petition: Include abortion rights in the Bill of Rights

The government are scrapping the Human Rights Act for some reason??? And replacing it with a “Bill of Rights”, but there are some rights from the old Act that are notably absent…

As Parliament considers the Bill of Rights, the Government must reconsider including abortion rights in this Bill. Rights to abortion must be specifically protected in this legislation, especially as the Government has refused to rule out leaving the European Convention on Human Rights.

You can sign if:

  • You are a UK citizen (regardless of where you live), or
  • You live in the UK (regardless of whether you are a citizen).

Deadline: 5 January 2023

Federal officials are looking into whether Canadian health workers could face legal risks for providing abortion services to Americans from states where the procedure has been outlawed.
A Health Canada spokeswoman says the government is examining the issue in response to concerns raised by the Canadian Medical Protective Association, which provides legal support for doctors, about the potential cross-border consequences of the U.S. Supreme Court‘s decision last month to strike down the 1973 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.
“We understand many Canadians, including many of our physician members, have expressed interest in facilitating access to abortions for U.S. patients,” Lisa Calder, CEO of the CMPA, wrote in a letter addressed to several cabinet ministers this week.
“At the same time, our members are expressing concern about increased risk of medico-legal difficulties.”
Calder called on federal officials to work with their provincial counterparts to protect Canadian doctors from potential legal action if U.S. states try to restrict residents from accessing abortions outside their borders.

I think it's still important to note how inaccessible abortion is to begin with despite its (current) legality, which may soon be subject to change because Canada is a joke. For Americans genuinely planning on moving, don't move to Quebec or Alberta. It's beyond white supremacy central. Quebec is restricting its immigration policies to the extreme right now anyways. If you're Muslim or brown the likelihood of them letting you in is already slim, but you'd also have to be subject to learning and mastering French in 6 months or risk deportation.

Hey, I've seen a lot of people saying that you should support smaller-scale abortion facilities instead of spending on Planned Parenthood because, according to them, PP already has plenty of money.

While I totally support donating to local abortion care facilities, I think it's really dangerous to be spreading around misinformation about Planned Parenthood, so here are a list of reasons that Planned Parenthood is a really worthwhile resource right about now:

  • Planned Parenthood has a large legal fund and they know how to use it. Not only will they work on-the-ground to provide reproductive health services, they will work on the legislative level in every state to fight the legal battles that are about to become very fucking necessary. Donate directly to abortion services, yes - but if you want to protect the legality of abortion and the right to privacy in the doctor's office, Planned Parenthood's legal team will fight in the places where you, as an individual, cannot.
  • I've heard some people saying that Planned Parenthood actually does damage to the reproductive justice community because they "take up all the talking space" and then they'll say "well, abortion is only a small amount of what Planned Parenthood does" thus stigmatizing abortion. While I can't speak for every PP facility, in my experience during my volunteer trainings, THIS IS MISINFORMATION. Outside supporters of PP will say this ABOUT Planned Parenthood, but at my volunteer trainings the workers actually had us do spoken activities to de-stigmatize abortion for anyone who needed it. We were given multiple "abortion is good, actually" talks.
  • On that note, the things PP does aside from abortion are actually very important. One thing they do is distribute INFORMATION on a widespread scale. This information will often focus on important things to know about pregnancy health, when abortion might be needed, and communicative campaigns to spread abortion stories with specific participants' consent in order to de-stigmatize abortion and spread awareness.
  • A number of smaller "Pregnancy Crisis Centers" disguise themselves as abortion providers, but are really fundamentalist Christian centers in disguise. These centers will abuse and psychologically torture people who were planning on coming in for abortions. However, a Planned Parenthood is always what it says it will be. I support Planned Parenthood because I know exactly what my money is going to when I make donations.

If you do know of a smaller abortion facility that needs funding, by all means, donate! (Also if you go on PP's website you can choose a PP facility to fund directly, if you don't want your donation to go into their large legal fund.) But if you're supporting a smaller center, do make sure that they really are a legitimate abortion provider before you donate.

Let's not spread misinformation or be divisive, people! That will only hurt reproductive justice, in the end. If you want to support small-scale abortion care centers, absolutely do that. It will be very much needed in the coming months. But you can do that without dunking on Planned Parenthood and all that they do for reproductive rights, justice, and healthcare. It is entirely possible to be supportive of both.

  1. Leave no online footprint of searches or purchases. Digital Defense Fund’s abortion privacy guide is your go-to resource for this. Using private browsers, two-factor authentication, encrypted messaging, strong passwords, etc. is critical. Google searches have been presented as evidence in an SMA trial before. Do not leave a digital trail.
  2. Use the medications properly to prevent interactions with healthcare providers. The pills are very effective, but they have to be used right. Carefully follow the instructions provided on the How to Use Abortion Pill website. Note that misoprostol tablets should always be taken by dissolving them under the tongue. Do NOT insert misoprostol vaginally if you are self-managing an abortion. While this is medically safe, it can leave incriminating pill remnants that can be detected in the vagina during a pelvic exam if you end up needing to seek medical care.
  3. If it’s not an emergency but you need expert health advice, use a free calling service like Google Voice to call or text the Miscarriage + Abortion Hotline at 1-833-246-2632. Medical complications are very uncommon with abortion pills, but they’re not impossible. The M+A Hotline is safe to use and is staffed by trustworthy clinicians who volunteer their time to help those who choose SMA. Do not use your own phone number to call as this will create a record that is visible to your cell service provider.
  4. Don’t disclose any information about SMA to emergency room staff if you do need to seek medical care. This is how most people who are arrested for SMA are reported. Healthcare providers are almost always who calls the police in cases of SMA criminalization. Contrary to popular belief, HIPAA does not protect your private health information from being shared with police if you are suspected of doing something that could be considered a crime. If you believe you need to seek urgent medical care, do not hesitate to go. Say “I think I’m having a miscarriage” and provide your symptoms. Do not mention any use of or purchase of abortion pills. There is no widely available test to detect misoprostol in your bloodstream. If you do not disclose it, there is no way for a medical provider to tell the difference between a medication abortion and a spontaneous miscarriage.
  5. Do not talk to the cops. Period. Do. Not. Talk. To. The. Cops. If you are questioned by police you should state, “I am exercising my right to remain silent, and I wish to speak with an attorney.” Do not speak again or nod in response to a question. Contact the Repro Legal Helpline as soon as possible for expert legal advice: 1-844-868-2812. Do not agree to questioning or speak to any law enforcement official without a lawyer present.

in light of the texas abortion ban here’s a reminder to stop debating what counts as a human, baby, or life with pro-lifers because that is not a debate you can win. you can not win a philosophical debate about what counts as a person, and you will not change their minds.

what can be proven is that in no situation under united states law is an individual legally obligated to lend their body or organs for the sake of another life.

4.5 million people each year are in need of blood transfusion, the entire process of donating blood takes a little over an hour, it’s free, and a single pint of blood can save up to 3 peoples lives, but there is no legal obligation or requirement to donate blood in place.

it is illegal to take organs from deceased peoples’ bodies without permission. CORPSES. bodily integrity is prioritized by law, even after death.

it doesn’t fucking matter whether a fetus is a person, whether a fetus is alive, whether a fetus has a soul. it literally doesn’t matter. pro-lifers set up the argument through that lens (hence their name) to evoke empathy and pity and take the focus away from the actual process of pregnancy, which changes a person’s body FOREVER. that is not an exaggeration. whether the pregnancy is complicated and high-risk or totally smooth sailing, the birthing person will physically never be the same. if they’re lucky, they’ll come out of it with weight gain, differently shaped breasts, and changes to the cervix/vagina. if they aren’t, there’s a fucking laundry list of potential complications that could arise, that may eventually fix themselves, need surgical or therapeutic intervention, or never go away, like varicose veins, separation of the abdominal muscles, incontinence, prolapse, diabetes, postpartum depression, and chronic pain, just off the top of my head. and this makes no mention of the very real possibility of income disruption, as well as the financial cost of giving birth, and the chance of fucking death, which is even higher for underserved communities like black women.

there is no basis for a governing body forcing an individual to lend their body or organs for the sake of another life. that is the argument. period the end.

No method of contraception is 100% sure, and everybody knows that, don’t they, except nobody ever imagines it’s going to happen to them. It just happened to me. If you don’t know, I live in Poland, and I can’t count on the help of Polish doctors due to very strict abortion laws. I can’t do this; I live below the poverty line, my income barely covers rent, and my body is in no way ready for this. I don’t want this. The only way I can have an abortion safely and legally is abroad, but that costs a lot of money. I’m scared and broke and desperate and if you’re willing to send me like, a dollar even? I’ll be forever grateful. If you’re not, please don’t send me hate. I was brought up by a strict, Catholic family, please believe me when I say that I’ve heard most horrible things you might want to say to me. Anyway – please at least share this.

I don’t want to beg but it’s all there’s left to do.
