Housing and immigration advocates are angry New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs is blaming the housing crisis on immigrants and say his comments are dangerous. "OK, what is the root cause of our housing crisis? You know, record — record immigration," Higgs said to reporters Tuesday evening while commenting on the federal budget. "So what is this sustainable immigration level? How do we get to the point where we say, OK, this is what we can manage in our province, because everyone is feeling it," he went on to say. Aditya Rao is a board member of the Madhu Verma Migrant Justice Centre, which provides services to migrant workers in New Brunswick facing poor working and housing conditions. "This is a really dangerous road to go down," Rao said of HIggs's analysis. Racists and xenophobes would be waiting for words like this, he said.

Two university researchers are calling out the Quebec government for political interference and censorship. Retired Prof. Michele Vatz-Laaroussi, an emeritus professor at Université de Sherbrooke and Prof. Lilyane Rachedi with the school of social work at UQAM say they were awarded a contract to develop anti-racism training for the province’s health-care employees, but it was pulled by the health ministry over a reference to systemic racism. “Deception, incomprehension, I’d say shock,” said Vatz-Laaroussi, when asked what her reaction was to the cancellation. The researchers say they were mandated by Quebec’s Health Ministry (MSSS) to come up with anti-racism training for its employees in 2021. But upon reviewing the training’s final stages back in December, they were told it was being pulled altogether. Though no link has been made between the effective closure of Roxham Road and the deaths of two Romanian and Indian families on the St. Lawrence River in Akwesasne last week, advocates for migrants say they expect more tragedies of the kind as increased border surveillance resulting from the closure pushes people to take greater risks.  The renegotiation of the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA) announced March 24 led to the detention of dozens of asylum seekers at the Canada-U.S. border south of Montreal for days before being sent back into rural New York with no plan, their savings spent and almost no resources to help them find food, shelter and rides.  That weekend, residents of nearby Hemmingford, Que., witnessed a family being arrested by RCMP in their driveway after the two adults and two small children had tried illegally crossing into Canada.

Evelyne Bouchard was playing board games with her family on Saturday afternoon when she saw RCMP vehicles pull into her driveway.
Bouchard is used to the police presence. She owns a farm in Hemmingford, Que., along the U.S. border and just two kilometres away from Roxham Road.
But she says Saturday was out of the ordinary.
As of 12 a.m., police presence increased in the town after access to the illegal crossing was closed — this due to changes to the Safe Third Country Agreement (STCA), which now prevent migrants from claiming asylum after crossing at Roxham Road.
Later that same day, the RCMP came to inform Bouchard that agents were in the woods looking for migrants who crossed into Canada illegally and were on her property.
"A little while later we saw them escorting a family, two adults and two children, to their vehicle … We just saw them walking down the driveway with the agents," said Bouchard, adding that one of the children was so small, they had to be carried. [...]

A Toronto police officer has pled guilty to a disciplinary act charge after he speculated to another officer at the scene of a fatal shooting that a “Somalian guy did it” or “at least…Black guy.”
Const. Christopher Hominuk entered the misconduct plea at a police tribunal hearing on Monday.
According to an agreed statement of facts, Hominuk was assigned to 23 Division when he responded to a radio call for a shooting at an Etobicoke plaza shortly after midnight on July 20, 2021.
The documents state that the incident that led to the shooting began inside a Somalian restaurant, which is “frequented by members of the Somalian community.” [...]

Another thing I think could be a weakness of Thrawn’s, and really Star Wars in general, that I’d love to see exploited more (though I doubt it will be) is the Planet of the Hats.

In Star Wars, most species are pretty static – they all seem to follow the same general patterns and cultures, which I think is a major waste on Star Wars’s front. As much as people are shaped by the culture they grow up in, there are equally those who define themselves outside of such, and especially in a place as vast and varied as the GFFA, there’d be a lot of cultural mixing and variety. The sheer vastness of the galaxy would confound attempts at a single, solid culture – is that zabrak from Iridonia, Dathomir, Coruscant? Is this twi’lek from Ryloth, Tatooine, Ord Mantell, a thousand other systems? They’re all going to have their differences; so how does one define a single ‘zabrak’ or ‘twi’lek’ culture?

As a weakness, I could see it as stemming from Thrawn’s background – in the Ascendancy series, we meet the xenophobic, culturally isolated Chiss, surrounded by the other xenophobic, culturally isolated governments of the Chaos. It’s ripe for producing that kind of one-size-fits-all view of other cultures. Thrawn is better than most Chiss, but there’s still a mindset, which he’s unlikely to consider a problem, especially when it’s helped him to so many victories – until it hits him in the face.

Thrawn can analyze the art of a species for cultural weaknesses, but I’d love to see him scramble after he realizes his Mon Calamari opponent is fighting like a weequay pirate crossed with a Mandalorian shock trooper.

Interestingly, I also think it’s a weakness of the Grysk, which I’d love to see exploited – for conquerors that depend on a deep understanding of their opponent’s motives, the sheer variety of the galaxy would massively slow them down. A twi’lek from Ryloth will have different pressure points than a Mandalorian twi’lek, or one from Tatooine. And that’s just one species – add in the sheer numbers, mixed cultures, and it’s going to be a job and a half. Unless, of course, they’re facing the Imperial Navy – humans all, raised and trained in the same culture. Except for Thrawn… who is, in the end, only one man.

In the past six years, the European Union, weary of the financial and political costs of receiving migrants from sub-Saharan Africa, has created a shadow immigration system that stops them before they reach Europe. It has equipped and trained the Libyan Coast Guard, a quasi-military organization linked to militias in the country, to patrol the Mediterranean, sabotaging humanitarian rescue operations and capturing migrants. The migrants are then detained indefinitely in a network of profit-making prisons run by the militias. In September of this year, around six thousand migrants were being held, many of them in Al Mabani. International aid agencies have documented an array of abuses: detainees tortured with electric shocks, children raped by guards, families extorted for ransom, men and women sold into forced labor. “The E.U. did something they carefully considered and planned for many years,” Salah Marghani, Libya’s Minister of Justice from 2012 to 2014, told me. “Create a hellhole in Libya, with the idea of deterring people from heading to Europe.”

If anyone needs a reminder of what scum European governments are

Despite its reputation as a haven for refugees, Canada has been deporting North Korean asylum seekers who came to the country through South Korea.
Nearly 2,000 have been kicked out of the country since 2013 because the government says they lied on their asylum application forms. Another 150 Koreans are under imminent threat of deportation.
Eleven years ago, Taegun Kim came to Canada with his wife, daughter and son. Now they have two more children, both Canadian citizens. A deportation would be catastrophic for the family.
“That notice means death to me,” Kim told Al Jazeera. “I came all the way here for a better life and my family is well adjusted to life in Canada. To think we’re going to be separated, it breaks my heart.”

This is the worst part. The deported refugee’s families could be killed or forced into manual labour camps because of this:

Rocky Kim of the Canada Federation of North Korean Defectors group said family members still inside the totalitarian state remain vulnerable because of their escape. Attracting attention to their situation could be deadly, he said.
The refugees say South Korea is definitely not safe for them as North Korean spies can track them down.
“If we’re found by the North Korean government, our family left in North Korea will be executed or sent to a labour camp,” Kim said.

Here’s your dose of “What the Fuck Is Going On” News (2/19/2017 - 2/20/2017 Edition)

  • Trump held a rally in Florida on Saturday night where he discussed many topics with the crowd. One thing that stood out was when he brought up the travel ban, he highlighted reasons why we need to take this approach. One statement was that we’ve already let in thousands of refugees who “there was no way to vet,” which is absolutely false. Then he talked about refugee-related crimes and terrorism in Europe and said “You look at what’s happening last night in Sweden. Sweden. Who would believe this?” The country was quick to point out that nothing happened “last night,” and that Trump was making this up. (source)
  • Later, Trump explained that he was actually referring to a segment that appeared on Fox News the day before about Sweden. White House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters “He was talking about rising crime and recent incidents in general — not referring to a specific incident.” Interestingly enough, his comments didn’t indicate he was referring to crime in general or referring to a segment he watched on television but whatever. (source)
  • Trump’s rally also hit a few other of his usual points such as: building the border wall, repealing the Affordable Care Act, criticizing the media, Syria “safe zones,” and the upcoming and revised travel ban. (Full transcript)
  • Two draft memos seen by Reuters show that the Trump administration plans to greatly expand the categories of immigrants they target for deportation. The documents have already been approved by the Secretary of Homeland Security and are under final review - likely to be released within the week. One memo will instruct ICE to ignore former memos that prioritized recent arrivals and immigrants convicted of crimes, it will also state that immigrants will not be afforded rights under U.S. privacy laws. The second memo instructs officers to crack down on migration at the border by holding migrants in detention until a determination in their case is made. (source)
  • The Trump administration is planning to restrict NASA’s budget and force them to focus solely on space, rather than issues related to climate change. The goal is to “rebalance,” the budget that goes towards NASA’s Earth Sciences Divisions and put the focus on space exploration. While they don’t want to completely eliminate this division, they do want to stop its work on climate change. (source)
  • Craig Deare, a senior Trump administration official, was fired after he privately criticized Trump’s policies. Apparently Deare spoke about Trump’s policies relating to Latin America, specifically his rocking start in relations with Mexico. Trump appointed Deare a month ago to head the National Security Council’s Western Hemisphere division. (source)
  • Sources close to the situation are saying that Trump’s Navy Secretary nominee Philip Bilden is likely to withdraw his nomination. However, the White House is currently denying publically that this is the case so we shall see. (source)
  • Today British lawmakers debated whether or not the government should rescind its invitation to Trump for an official state visit. Official state visits are multi-day affairs hosted by the Queen and out of the 12 U.S. presidents to hold office during Queen Elizabeth’s reign, only two have received an official state visit. No formal vote was held after the three hour debate, but those involved weighed what a Trump visit would mean and whether they should or shouldn’t rescind the invitation. (source)
  • The Michigan Civil Rights Commission released a report on the Flint Water Crisis found that the issue has it’s roots in historical and systemic racism. The report also calls for the creation of a “Truth and Reconciliation Commission” a model that was used in South Africa after apartheid as a way of rebuilding government trust and credibility by listening to and addressing specific concerns raised by Flint residents. (source) (full 129-page report)
  • Trump’s first campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, admitted that there is no evidence to Trump’s claim that there was mass voter fraud in New Hampshire. Trump insists that he would have won New Hampshire over Clinton if it wasn’t for buses of illegal voters from Massachusetts coming in, he has never provided evidence of this claim or his other claims regarding mass voter fraud. (source)
  • The Trump administration is reportedly considering changes that would make the U.S. trade deficit look bigger than currently reporting. This, along with Trump’s frequent use of false figures in subjects like unemployment, have created fears of data manipulation. (source)
  • Donald Trump will now officially be joining the list of speakers at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday (2/24). Mike Pence, Scott Walker, Ted Cruz, and Steve Bannon. Milo Yiannopoulos was set to be a keynote speak but has been uninvited after CPAC is faced push back regarding Yiannopoulos after a video resurfaced of him encouraging sex with 13 year olds. (source) (source)
  • Audio was obtained from November that reveals Trump attempting to get wealthy paying guests at his golf club in Bedminster to observe and aid in his Cabinet picks. “We’re doing a lot of interviews tomorrow – generals, dictators, we have everything. You may wanna come around, it’ll be fun, Trump is heard telling them. In the tape you can also hear him asked who he should appoint to lead the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This leak comes after the concerns raised when the guests at the Mar-a-Lago were able to sit in while Trump went over classified documents and made high level calls, many who live tweeted it. (source)
  • Trump officially announced that Army Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster is his new national security adviser, replacing Michael Flynn. (source)
  • A notice from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection details a proposal that asks for Chinese visitors to have their social media screened before they enter the country. The proposal will be published on tomorrow, February 21st, and the public has 60 days to comment on the new proposal before it will be formally considered. Comments can be mailed to Customs and Border Protection at its Washington office. (source)
  • Today also marks Trump’s 30th day in office. To recap he’s signed over 20 executive orders, signed 4 bills into law, fired his national security advisor, lost his pick for labor secretary, lied to the public significantly more than he tells the truth, gone golfing six times despite claiming he would never play golf why in the White House, visited his Mar-a-Lago resort 3 straight weekends which is costing the taxpayers millions a tripand has a historically low approval rating
  • And now your daily reminder that: Flint, Michigan still doesn’t have clean water. Standing Rock still needs your support. The American infrastructure report card still averages poorly with the rating of a “D+”

  • Immigrants not only fail to increase crime but, in some cases, actually reduce crime rates, according to research in the Journal of Ethnicity in Criminal Justice’s first issue of 2017.
  • The study is yet another in a long line of findings over the past century (WSJ) that all tell the same story: Immigrants are less inclined to be criminals than native-born Americans.
  • Decades of data support this assumption. Native-born males 18 to 39 years old were more than twice as likely to be incarcerated than immigrants in the same demographic
  • That’s according to the American Immigration Council, which analyzed 2010 data from the American Community Survey.
  • “Immigrants are much less likely to be criminals than the native born,” University of Alabama professor Lesley Reid, one of the paper’s authors, said by phone. Read more (2/13/17 4:29 PM)

How do you know that Trump’s bad? Yesterday Swedish Neo-Nazis took to the streets in the capital, shouting about how much they loved him, and how they were going to come after Muslims, Jews, immigrants and “traitors of the state”.

We’re on the other side of the fucking pond, and we’re still feeling the effect of a trump victory.

Ladies and gentlemen, the British.

As a Englishman I’d just like to say that this post and its content is a disgusting misrepresentation of the English - to my eternal shame we are often far more prejudiced, impolite, arrogant and racist than that.

The audacity! England colonizes the whole world and then wants to act brand new now that people are coming to England since England ruined their homeland and that they dare to bring their culture with them and keep it through generations. The entitlement and ignorance of white English people is incredible.

Western race relations in three images

but then they expect to have the right to wear our clothes (which is usually cheapened, degraded and insulting) and play with aspects of our cultures, use important religious symbols along centuries and centuries of history without letting us enjoy OUR own past

Important.
