Ricardo Tranjan wants Canadians to rethink what we call our national housing crisis. Tranjan, a researcher with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, says what we’re experiencing can’t even be called a crisis—our housing system hasn’t suddenly failed. Instead it’s working exactly as designed, enriching property owners at the expense of everyone else. The problem is that it’s gone into sudden overdrive.
That’s why he thinks the fixes espoused by government and industry—more supply, for the most part—aren’t going to get us where we need to be. Instead, he wants to inject politics back into the housing discussion, framing the problem as an issue of class, with tenants on one side and landowners on the other.

For the 1,000,000,012th time, stop pitting struggling people against each other. If you want universal healthcare so no one has medical debt, you can just say that. But my guess is that you've been fighting tooth and nail against universal healthcare.

You can't call education a choice while also insisting that people who don't get an education don't deserve a living wage.

Also, people say the same things about healthcare too. There are plenty of people who believe that being sick is a choice, especially if they're fat or use drugs.

They should look at forgiving medical debt. Period.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh brings up that 25% of Canadians are going hungry because they can’t afford groceries and that he would tax corporations to fix this inequality, and members of the Conservative Party of Canada start laughing.

These people are evil.

it is my unfriendly and extremely generous opinion that all homes that havent been lived in for at least 1 year (without any good reason like “i was in a coma”) should be seized and given to the homeless.

if you wanted it you shouldve lived in it.

sick of landlords buying up hella housing and then sitting on it all to create scarcity in the market to upsell their shitty cardboard boxes to yuppies.

sick of rich people buying homes all over and then either never finishing them or living in them (leaving them empty and to rot)

sick of people who keep making shitty fucking apartment buildings out of materials that will fall apart in 15 years and upselling to yuppies

im sick of the housing market i want these people to hurt. i cant stress that enough.

i think the more property you own the shorter the window should be on how long it is legally allowed to remain empty.

if you own 50 fucking apartments and houses and one is empty for a week it should be taken from you.

The rich can stay at home as long as they need

but apparently we muuust force the poorest public schools open huh?

capitalists already know this shit isn’t safe, they’re laughing at us trying to make something impossible work.

If literally Google doesn’t think PPE and cleaning will keep their employees safe why the fuck do we think underfunded public schools can? Get a fucking grip. They’re killing us.

A large part of forcing teachers to go back is that it's a chain reaction. If public kids had to stay home, average working parents would have to stay too, and then we'd have more people advocating for stimulus and unemployment

I think they’ll find our demands will be far greater with far more bite as people begin to die in even larger quantities due to lethal policies

We're also staring down the barrel of about 30 million households being suddenly fucking homeless very, very soon. So that's cool.

im sure that’ll be great for stopping the spread.

opening education up to anyone who wants to learn doesn’t actually deplete the fucking economy or whatever reified hogwash folks have been trying to say

… when anyone can learn what they want we rapidly expand what we’re all capable of doing

we have a shortage of doctors, teachers, engineers, etc. … allowing anyone with a passion to learn eliminates this shortage and saves lives, improves the infrastructure and creates entirely new fields

are you tired of shitty doctors killing people and not listening to you?

are you tired of shitty infrastructure, potholes? damages bridges? dangerous dams and levees? unacceptable drinking water?

are you tired of fucked up teachers not doing their job and abusing you or your children?

this was all by design under capitalism.

we artificially create these problems by not opening up education to the world, and teaching folks that anyone can learn these jobs if they want to.

poor people will be taught by shitty teachers, and think they can never become engineers or doctors or teachers or musicians or artists etc. and then everyone reinforces that idea by not allowing them to learn when they’re not currently good at something

so many of us poor people were set back by our education system and actively taught that we’re incapable of learning, this is the legacy of capitalism.

i’m sorry but a capitalist’s labor pool organizing a strike is why this boycott against amazon [07/15/19] is important. if you think just personally boycotting things with no leverage is important … you don’t understand what a boycott is.

it’s cool if you do it for personal moral reasons but don’t pretend it’s anything other than that.

this is a strike, first and foremost, us boycotting is only in regards to the strike. we are simply doing what amazon’s workers need us to do for them.

you the consumer are only leverage when the workers have the ability to make you the leverage.

you the consumer do not generate leverage, the labor must generate the leverage and you as the consumer must act as a part of that leverage. the primary leverage is the workers labor being withheld by the workers.

boycotts don’t work without a bite to them, and the biggest bite you can take out of amazon is weaponizing their labor force against them.

workers organizing, and showing solidarity with said workers is how we make our way towards unionization, which is how we get infrastructural leverage against amazon.

the more support you show labor, the more courageous they will get. we must stand behind the workers.

this is part of why a lot of that extra shit doesn’t matter that much, like boycotting twitch, or what have you.

we’re boycotting amazon for the warehouse workers to lighten their burden. all yall expanding it is w/e but it’s really missing the point … and the point is support amazon’s warehouse workers who are on strike.

remember who this is for.

This is exactly, EXACTLY, the point i was trying to make last year during the strike/boycott when i told people it was important to get the dates and details of the boycott correct because it NEEDS to be in tandem with the workers strike and what they want and need us to do. I literally got told I was an undercover Amazon shill for making this point.

You as an individual or a group of individuals from tumblr dot com can do whatever you want but you are fooling yourselves if you think a multibillion dollar corporation like Amazon cares about a small number of consumers like you, especially when most of you already rarely buy from Amazon on principle anyway. You must support the workers in the way they ask of you or else your actions are pointless. And you must do it in tandem with everyone else for impact. And I am not a shill for saying so; the opposite, in fact.

Avatar

Boycotting amazon is a good idea and a good deed but, idk there's a feeling of it seeming useless because the last boycott was for a minimum wage increase and that got shat all over due to it "Not actually reaching the workers" Won't amazon just pull some other loophole this time around as well?

Avatar

the most important thing is to show solidarity with the workers. we want the workers to keep organizing strikes. we want the workers to be seen publicly as an organized entity.

this isn’t about the consumers. this isn’t about us outside of amazon.

just because it got shat on doesn’t mean they shouldn’t keep trying. they need to be a thorn in amazon’s side. they need to keep doing this.

in the past it took a lot of tries to get decent working conditions/pay/etc. too. this shit doesn’t come from one fucking strike or one fucking boycott.

this is a consistent effort. we are playing a long game. you aren’t going to get workers rights by giving up after a couple tries.

I think too many people expect these things to be handled quickly. This is a fight that’s going to take a while. A singular strike isn’t going to make the change happen, but that doesn’t make it meaningless either. It’s a war of attrition and right now, Amazon is hoping to outlast the disgruntled workers. But continued and prolonged protests and actions against Amazon will eventually work. Actions will continue to escalate until Amazon finally caves and it’s on us to support the workers in whatever way they want/need to help them get their demands met.

We must stand behind workers: through Success and through failures. This is the only way we can succeed.

heres how it’s gonna go down

amazon: if our workers unionize i’m going to be fucking pissed we have to do everything in our power to disenfranchise them

amazon warehouse workers: we organized a labor strike

everyone: cool we’ll boycott using amazon in a way that impacts yall in order to support you warehouse workers in any way we can

media: wow look at how much stuff amazon owns you should boycott all of this stuff otherwise you’re fake woke and don’t care about amazon workers

everyone: how can i boycott all of amazon that doesnt make sense they own everything uhg… am i a bad person because i can’t boycott everything?

amazon: yes yes, yes yes! we’ve turned this into a question of whether or not boycotts are effective!!!! ignore the workers don’t look at the workers forget about the workers!!!

everyone: so you mean our boycott did do something?

amazon, in a fake nice voice: oh of course, we’re just so sad about this boycott that we decided to make amazon prime free for a month because we’re so very sad about making you all sad uwu

media: boycotts work!

amazon warehouse workers: did yall forget about us and what this was about or?

media: the amazon boycott did it again!

this is why you can’t allow them to take the narrative from the workers. we need all eyes on them. we need to make this about the workers. it is about the workers. it was always about the workers. anything you’re doing right now to help is in relationship TO THE WORKERS.

like honestly yall are fucking ridiculous if you thought this amazon boycott was about sticking it to amazon. you think a two day boycott is going to stop like the 4th richest corporation in the world from sitting comfortably in an oligopolic stronghold?

this is about encouraging amazon workers to keep going on strike. this is about encouraging amazon workers to keep organizing. this is about encouraging amazon workers to keep fighting.

amazon boycott is in effect don’t use amazon or amazon products today: monday july 15th 2019

and tomorrow - the strikes are happening on the 16th as well

i know we can all go two days without worshipping jeff bezos so please don’t cross the picket line.

If you need it from Amazon and still want to support them, believe me, it will still be there next week, next month, probably even next year. Help the workers - we would want them to help us if we were striking.

please just wait the two days. do it for your fellow workers. do it as an act of class solidarity. show amazon workers they’re important to you. show amazon workers you stand with them.

People have died in those warehouses getting packages ready. Stand by the ones who are still here.

You know like how impossible it is to not use amazon products cause like the majority of websites are hosted on amazon web services ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

this confusion is why i’m pretty upset with everyone piling on extra shit to boycott. We are specifically boycotting amazon, the website. The website you order shit off of.

We are doing this to support striking amazon workers.

We are not doing it to fuck over amazon. We do not have the power to fuck over amazon. We only have the power to support workers and let them know if they stand up to amazon we will be there to support them.

Stop tacking on so much shit, and remember who this is for. Otherwise you’re going to get a bunch of disillusioned disenchanted people like this person i’m reblogging from who are so confused by all your piled on shit they don’t even understand what we’re doing here.
