Can Hollywood just leave ancient Egypt the fuck alone? They portray it as if its some mystic and grand civilization, then they turn around and portray modern Egypt (and the whole Middle East and North Africa region) as primitive and savage.

It’s already bad enough how MENA people are excluded from movies about the Roman Empire, even though most estimates say that there were more MENA people in the Roman Empire than Europeans (but that’s a rant for another day). Yet when they do make movies about ancient empires or kingdoms in the Middle East, wether it was about Egyptian pharaohs or Biblical stories, they make these whitewashed AF movies with a “mysterious” desert aesthetic with exotic looking building and clothes, with absolutely zero MENA actors/actress.

I’m sick of this, we are portrayed as terrorists and backward-minded people 97% of the time in every single movie and show (and 97% isn’t an exaggerated percentage, studies have literally estimated that we are casted in antagonist roles 97% of the time), but when they have to do movies like Aladdin, Assassin Creed, Prince of Persia, every single movie about Jesus+other Biblical characters and every single movie about ancient Egyptians (including the upcoming Cleopatra movie with G*l Gadot) we are suddenly no where to be seen and instead you only get white people with a tan and to appear inclusive, a few PoC who are not even MENA.

This is ridiculous, you can not like our culture and history, but not like us as people. Leave the MENA region the hell alone until you have a shred of decency and respect toward us.

a lot of people will say things like “we all said stuff we don’t agree with now when we were younger” and i agree to an extent, many of us did have some level of ignorance before but here are a couple thoughts –

1.) not everyone was virulently, violently racist. yes maybe many people weren’t educated on the nuances of systemic racism, said things that were far far from perfect, etc., but if you really think EVERYONE was out here thinking blackface and slurs were okay??? i have questions about your childhood??

2.) we are not all public figures. public figures must be held to a different standard because of the power they wield. a platform is a PRIVILEGE not a right.

3.) if you are a public figure and your early videos were racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, etc., you effectively built your career off of that. that is where your career took off. you have directly profited off of bad behavior. many of these apology videos are filmed in million dollar homes bought in part by these videos.

4.) not posting blatantly racist things is not the same as being actively anti-racist. same with sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. I am white, so this is not for me to determine what counts as effective anti-racism, but it’s for sure not an ABSENCE of action

George Floyd was killed by an officer while being handcuffed. He was PLEADING for breath.

A black man asked a woman to put her dog on a leash. The woman then threatened to call the cops on HIM and accuse him of threatening her.

A white pastor claimed two black men kidnapped him to cover up the fact that he was in the hotel room because he was cheating on his wife.

A white woman drowned her nine-year-old son with autism, and said a black man had done it.

Regis Korchinski Paquet was shoved off the balcony by an officer. She died.

Tony McDade, a transgender man, was shot and killed by an officer.

These are all under 72 hours. 3 days. Now, realize what happens in a month.

Anonymous asked:

hey, don't hate me but question, the term "reserve racism" its not a thing but the definition of racism, people can be racist and bully white people right? please don't be one of those who says it cant happen but being racist to white folks cant ever be as bad as racism to non white people.

the reason People say reverse racism doesnt exist and you cant be racist against White People is because racism requires a power Imbalance.

thats why a Person of Color saying ‘i hate White people’ does not have the same connotations as a White Person saying ‘i hate People of color’.

the power imbalance comes from societal, political and historical structures that, over centuries, have been built and formed by White People in power and, inherently, put People of Color at a disadvantage, and therefore White People at an advantage.

you can discriminate against White People, you cannot be racist against them.

when a Person of Color says they hate White People, it means they hate those structures. they hate their oppressors. they hate the unnecessary hardships they have to go through throughout their whole lives because they are not white.

when a White Person says they hate People of Color, the connotations are completely different. it means they hate our existence. it means they hate the fact that People who dont look like them, get to live around them. it means, even though we have no power over them, they see us as threat for just existing.

White People saying that is basically like kicking someone in the ribs who is already on the ground. A Person of Color saying it is like someone on the ground trying to protect themselves.

i dont know if thats the answer you wanted from me, but if it isnt and you really feel like telling me im wrong, please just block me instead, thank you.

“Frollo saw Esmeralda as a demon. Quasimodo saw Esmeralda as an Angel. Phoebus saw her as Esmeralda. That is why Esmeralda fell in love with Phoebus.”

- Hannah B, on Quasimodo ‘not getting the girl’ in Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame (via merina2)

Yeah, no.

Phoebus makes a face and doesn’t seem to be 100% on board with Frollo’s genocidal agenda (AKA he extermination of the Parisian Romani population) but he follows Frollo’s orders for 95% of the film. If you enable a racist no matter how reluctant you are, you are racist too and don’t care about the oppressed group (which Esmeralda is proudly part of).

I will give credit where credit is due. Esmeralda really falls for Phoebus after he rebels against Frollo and refuses to burn down a house with civilians in it. He’s an official “good guy” but… What took him so long? He worked for a genocidal figure who, I imagine, ordered his guards to terrorise/intimidate/threaten equally innocent Romani people. That was fine but burning down a white family’s house is too much??

Now let’s talk about love interests for Esmeralda. Her own community is made of unattractive and dishonest characters with beaky noses, beady eyes, and unkempt bodies, just look at the “Court of Miracles” song. So that rules out her own people.

Then we have Quasimodo, our easily impressionable hero. Esmeralda quickly sees his lacking self-confidence and how ignorant he is of the world, as seen with the palm reading scene. He’s more of a little brother/ younger friend to Esmeralda. So that rules him out too.

Finally we get Phoebus, the mediocre white guy. He doesn’t care about the struggles she endures at the hand of him and the rest of Paris. Yet he somehow “sees her as Esmeralda”? No way.  It’s like me saying I don’t hate islanders (random example), actively oppress them, work for a boss who wants them dead and I somehow genuinely care for only one islander in particular. It’s hypocritical with a dash of fetishisation.

But I guess the bar is so low for Esmeralda, that Phoebus is the best thing for her.

It’s amazing how Mark Wahlberg committed a literal hate crime and still got to have a shitty acting career at the end of the day.

Hate CrimeS, with an S, plural, cuz ol Markie Mark committed several

I’m…. stunned?? I want to say “why didn’t I know about this” but let’s be real, we all know why. Here you go

“In June 1986, Wahlberg and three friends chased after three African-American children while yelling “Kill the nigger, kill the nigger” and throwing rocks at them.[13] The next day, Wahlberg and others followed a group of schoolchildren taking a field trip on a beach, yelled racial epithets at them, threw rocks at them and “summoned other white males who joined” in the harassment.[13] In August 1986, civil action was filed against Wahlberg for violating the civil rights of his victims, and the case was later settled the next month.[14][15][16]

In April 1988, Wahlberg approached a middle-aged Vietnamese man named Thanh Lam on the street and, using a large wooden stick, bashed him over the head until he was knocked unconscious while calling him a “Vietnam fucking shit”. That same day, Wahlberg also attacked a second Vietnamese man named Hoa “Johnny” Trinh, punching him in the eye without provocation. According to court documents regarding these crimes, when Wahlberg was arrested later that night and returned to the scene of the first assault, he stated to police officers: “You don’t have to let him identify me, I’ll tell you now that’s the mother-fucker whose head I split open.”[17] Investigators also noted that Wahlberg “made numerous unsolicited racial statements about ‘gooks’ and ‘slant-eyed gooks’”.[18][19]

For these crimes, Wahlberg was charged with attempted murder, pleaded guilty to assault, and was sentenced to two years in Suffolk County Deer Island House of Correction. He ultimately served only 45 days of his sentence.“

What isn’t included here is that he said he didn’t feel guilty not because he ever apologized to the victims but because he did good onto others and himself. WHAT THE FUCK THOSE THAZ HAVE TO DO WITH THE RACIALIZED TRAUMA YOU BROUGHT ONTO YOUR VICTIMS ? And then he tried to partition to be pardoned.

Once you chace children and call them slurs, once you beat up people just for not being white in a country that doesn’t actually belong to white people in the first place and then have the audacity to never acknowledge that or apologize you deserve to drop of a cliff head first.

AND HE DARED TO STAR IN SOME BLUE LIVES MATTER SHIT???? I HATE HOLLYWOOD SO MUCH. I HOPE HE DROPS DEAD.

I was going to talk about this yesterday, but tbh it was my birthday and I didn’t want to think about anything negative.

I recently just had a racist experience with a really popular artist on Tumblr that I liked for a long while, I thought I wasn’t gonna share this at first because it happened in a private conversation between us but then I found out she had a twitter account and she was talking bad about me to her followers and twisting my words so now I want to talk about it too (she didn’t say my name so I’m not gonna say her’s, so don’t ask)

Warning, this is very long.

And if your paying for a commission what is the artist’s problem with drawing Damian darker? :/

White people always love to throw out the ‘but racist people are in the minority!! The majority of us isn’t racist!!’ excuse when in reality racists wouldn’t even dare to open their mouths if they were actually in the minority. most non white people would go their lives without ever having to face racism. But they don’t. Because racists are everywhere. Every corner. Every street. Every step of the way of our lives. But I never actually encountered a white person that defended a person of colour from a racist, so there’s that.

Brown People aren't Interchangeable

I’m not going to see Aladdin. I’m going full Dr.Strange/Ghost in the Shell on this. I was worried they wouldn’t cast an Arabian Aladdin and I was proven wrong. They got a handsome young Arabian guy named Mesa to play Aladdin. When I saw this I was relieved. However when I saw Naomi Scott, an actress I loved in Power Rangers and before that in Lemonade Mouth, my heart sank. This entire time I never expected them not to have an Arabian Jasmine. As a young black girl, Jasmine was who I looked up to and the closest to what I saw in the mirror. A dark skinned girl who was independent and brave. Naomi Scott can achieve the independent and brave parts when she plays the character but she will never and can never represent all the young brown Arabian and middle eastern girls in general who will now not see themselves as a princess. Especially in the age when being Middle Eastern in the west is seen with such negativity and racism. I don’t dislike Naomi by any means, I blame Disney more than her personally but she must understand she’s gonna get backlash for the rest of her career whether she likes it or not. I’d also like to note for all “stans” that no amount of tan (which would be brownface stop it) and makeup will somehow make her Arabian.

white person defending a movie with an all white cast: it’s set in New York in the 1920s !! every single person in the WEST before the year 2016 was a white! historical accuracy!

white person defending a movie with an all white cast: shut the hell your mouth! skin colour doesn’t matter! it should be the best person for the job….like this white guy……… with EYELINER

I want to do the right thing, even though I’m not sure it will make much of a difference. I didn’t want to involve myself in any drama, but I’m writing this post for my own peace of mind and because if I don’t say anything, no one else will.

This is in response to @hennigshelleys‘s Ally’s Army post (x). I’m not sure how much Alice told you, but I was the person who PM’d her a few nights ago. I’m the “bully” if that’s what you’re choosing to call me. I’m here to offer my piece, my side of the story. I hope that all of you will stick around to listen to it.

there’s been a lot of discussion of race and ethnicity in writing tonight and that is so incredibly important and it needs to be talked about, but I don’t want to come off as a broken record by repeating what has already been said.

POC characters are not a one size fits all and it is incredibly insensitive to portray them as such. There are SO many reference blogs here on tumblr that are solely dedicated to writing POC characters. With all of these resources there is not excuse as to why you can’t put in a shred of effort. And please don’t take this as ‘write what you know’ because that’s not the intention here. Just be mindful of what you doing when handling a culture that is not your own. And if a POC tells you what you did was hurtful, take a step back and listen.

I also wanna add that if I ever misrepresent poc, please don’t be afraid to call me out on it! As a white woman, I’m constantly learning from others and trying to educate myself more. I would honestly prefer someone tell me that I’m doing the wrong thing. I’ll probably even ask for some suggestions if you have any! I try and research as much as I can, but sometimes I don’t always get it right and that’s okay.

It makes me really sad that some of my poc friends feel that they can’t speak out without being labelled bullies. Honestly the only way we can learn from each other is to accept criticism.

When people ask me why I care about cultural appropriation:

Because Kardashians will take cornrows

And turn it into this.

Or take what is a racist caricature of a Black Bodies,

And turn it into this while be praised for it.

Or when Black women get mocked for their lips and Skin:

But Kylie Jenner can be praised for doing this:

Or when White people and celebrities can do this:

But women like this are seen as ugly (even in their own communities) or a called terrorists by others:

Things like that causes things like this:

Ok tell me how it doesn’t matter again?

This is upsetting…

This got me tight no funny shit
