Thousands of students across the U.S. were expected to stage school walkouts on Friday, joining peers around the world to demand action on climate change.

Max Prestigiacomo, who is organizing a demonstration in Madison, Wis., said there was a real disconnect between what was being taught in the classroom — that climate change poses an existential threat — and how politicians were reacting.

"The political climate in the States right now is doing nothing," said Prestigiacomo, 17. "They're bargaining with our future."

A seven-day teachers' strike at the second largest school district in the nation ended Tuesday with the United Teachers of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Unified School District agreeing to a deal that gave educators much of what they wanted, but not everything.

Tuesday night UTLA president Alex Caputo-Pearl said a "vast supermajority" of members voted in favor of the contract, but that the results wouldn't likely be formalized until Wednesday. He said his members would be "back to school tomorrow."

Tens of thousands of Los Angeles teachers went on strike Monday after negotiations in the nation’s second-largest school district collapsed.

Braving rain, teachers carrying signs saying "on strike for our students" and umbrellas stood in picket lines Monday morning demanding smaller class sizes, more nurses, counselors and librarians, higher wages for educators and more accountability for charter schools. There were picket lines at 900 schools across the city, United Teachers Los Angeles union president and teacher Alex Caputo-Pearl said at a news conference Monday.

Updated at 11:10 a.m. ET: Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is taking the teachers strike to court.

Emanuel made good Monday on promised legal action to try and end the first Chicago teachers strike in 25 years, instructing his lawyers for Chicago Public Schools to file an injunction to get kids and teachers back in class.

School will not resume on Monday and the Chicago Teachers Union will remain on strike.

"So our house just met and they would like the opportunity to exercise their democratic process and take the tentative agreement we have come to, that is still not quite finished in terms of language," said Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis. "They would like to go back to their schools, back to their members and have discussions with them. We will reconvene here on Tuesday."

Chicago teachers took to the picket lines for a second day Tuesday as the union and school district negotiate over two final sticking points: teacher evaluations and job security.

It's not clear how long the showdown will last, but as of Monday night, Chicago School Board president David Vitale remained optimistic about coming talks.
