Lori Fusaro is crazy about dogs. She’s lived with them for as long as she can remember, and she photographs them for a living. But until about a year ago, the idea of adopting an older dog made her squirm with uneasiness.
“I thought it would just be too sad and painful,” said Fusaro, 44, of Los Angeles. “I didn’t think my heart could take it, so I wasn’t willing to open myself up.”

Furry mammals can shake themselves 70 percent dry in just a fraction of a second, according to new research. The study, which looked at the shaking speeds of 16 species of mammals, from mice to lions to bears, found that the smaller the animal, the faster it must shake to dry its fur.
Toby, a 6-year-old Boston terrier, died in May after his owners say he was sickened by chicken jerky pet treats made by Nestle Purina. The Connecticut family is among several nationwide suing the maker of the treats and stores that sold them.
