“Star Wars” 40 years ago? How many parsecs is that?
It's easy to quibble with the science of "Star Wars": you can't hear zooming spaceships in the vacuum of #space, lasers move at the speed of light, etc. Famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson has even taken issue with the misuse of the term parsec in the "Star Wars" movies. (It's a unit of distance, not time.)
However flimsy some of the science may be (Tyson prefers "Star Trek"), it's undeniable that in the 40 years since the first "Star Wars" film was released, on May 25, 1977, the franchise has inspired countless young people to take an interest in space and the universe. It also remains the No. 11 all-time top grossing movie, according to box office tracker The Numbers, which puts three subsequent "Star Wars" films at numbers one, seven and 10.
