In a monumental discovery for paleontology and the first of its kind "Mummy of a juvenile sabre-toothed cat Homotherium latidens from the Upper Pleistocene of Siberia"

Abstract The frozen mummy of the large felid cub was found in the Upper Pleistocene permafrost on the Badyarikha River (Indigirka River basin) in the northeast of Yakutia, Russia. The study of the specimen appearance showed its significant differences from a modern lion cub of similar age (three weeks) in the unusual shape of the muzzle with a large mouth opening and small ears, the very massive neck region, the elongated forelimbs, and the dark coat color. Tomographic analysis of the mummy skull revealed the features characteristic of Machairodontinae and of the genus Homotherium. For the first time in the history of paleontology, the appearance of an extinct mammal that has no analogues in the modern fauna has been studied. Dinosaurs of Chaos - Triceratops of Hashut

Well thanks to the response I got from my other chaos-influenced dinosaurs, I thought it'd be a neat idea to explore a Triceratops gifted by Hashut!

Blessed by the god of fire, heat and subjugation, this Triceratops burns with arcane energies within, and feeds on the very soil itself, as well as whatever ashes and charcoal that it burned.

Tyrannosauruses of Khorne are locked in a constant arms race with it, as it tries to out-resist the searing heat of the Three Horned Face of Iron, while the Horned Beast of Hashut always tries to burn hotter and its iron hide to be even more resiliant.

Pando - The Largest Single Organism by Mass and 14,000 years old, and some perspective on just how old that is.

A random thought came to my head last night...

This is Pando.

All of this? Is a single male aspen tree. This entire thing is a single tree with multiple stems sharing a single root system.

It is the largest tree by mass, and the heaviest single organism, weighing in at 6000 metric tons. For perspective, that's 20 blue whales in mass.

But what also intrigues me is that... well. It's an old tree.

Established in 12,000 BCE, meaning it would be 14000 years old by 2023.

By the the last Smilodons died out in 10,000 BCE, it would have already been 2000 years old.

And Pando is still a youngster compared to the high estimate age of this clonal colony of sea grass estimated to be 100,000 years old.

For perspective, when the last Neanderthal died in 40,000 BCE?

This sea grass would have already been 60,000 years old.

If human civilization (as in, the kind of organized polity that can be identified with things as "states" and "urbanization" among a plethora of other things) was established during 5000 BCE, and thus 7000 years old:

Pando would have already been 5000 years old.

The Sea grass colony would have already been 93,000 years old.

And considering that the oldest vertebrate, that is the Greenland Shark can live for 500 years?

All of human civilization encompasses the lifespans of just 14 Greenland Sharks.

I dunno... it just really shows that we pretty are a tiny blip in the grand scheme of Earth's geological history.

A very humbling thought if you ask me.

Dinovember 2023 - Tzeentchian Therizinosaurus

Despite its many blessings from the God of Change, this Therizinosaurus remains quite normal in behavior, using the gifts Tzeentch gave simply to have a leg up over its normal counterparts.

It helps that he can use his main head as a periscope, safely feeding with his mouth head while looking with its many eyes so as to not draw attention from the local Khornate Tarbosaurus.

Fantastic reconstruction of an Archaeopteryx I saw at Southampton Fossil and mineral show. It was part of an exhibition of fossil replicas exhibited by Southampton University.

BEAUTIFUL.

Considering how horrible my mental health has been lately, there's nothing I needed more than good ol' paleontology!

Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary - A Celebration of Change in Science

So, I’ve made a series of drawings celebrating Jurassic Park’s 30th anniversary, specifically highlighting how much science has changed vs. when the original movie came out, and how much it affected the dinos of the franchise’s history.

First is the raptors, with a JP raptor here with Utahraptor and its namesake, Velociraptor.

Second is Spinosaurus, because JP3 has it’s 22nd anniversary this year, and the dude has changed repeatedly.

And finally, Tyrannosaurus rex itself. The modern T.rex is every bit as mighty and formidable as its fictional counterpart, and in some aspects (vision, overall build etc.) even more so. It’s only just much slower.

Mermay 2023 - Paleontology Based Merfolk

For the final proper batch of Merfolk for this Mermay, did a series of Paleontological themed Merfolk! They also form the foundations of many aspects of Merfolk culture in Beast Fables.

Ixandyr the Sea Lord - Mosasaurus

- Essentially Alexander the Great, but oceanic lizard-man. The man responsible for taming the seas, creating an adminsitrative system that lasted even after his empire was broken up and gone, and waged war against the surface world.

Keresa - Megalodon

- The greatest guardian to ever live, who could single-handedly stop a raid of some of the baddest merfolk to have ever lived. Also a selfless, kind sould beneath the giant muscles and sharp teeth.

Elun the Cleared-Eyed - Odobenocetops

- The guy that made modern merfolk religion as we know it. To him, all things are expressions of the Goddess, from the sands beneath to the water

Runihura - Jaekelopterus

The biggest of the big, the raider of raiders, comparable to even Keresa in size and ferocity.

Kuriosus - Walliserops

The first naturalist of ‘em all. His books are remarkably well preserved!

Kosumi and ‘Awha'y, Last of the Primevals - Sabertooth Salmon and Semirostrum

The very last merfolk, without whom, many wouldn’t even KNOW the names of those that came before.

Saint Patrick and the Beasts of Ireland

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to all who celebrate!

Today’s warm up features the titular saint and some extinct creatures of Ireland: Scelidosaurus, Megaloceros and the Great Auk.

Of the three, the Great Auk would have been the only one that the Saint would have lived during his lifetime, as they were common throughout Europe during the Fifth Century.

All the sadder that they couldn’t make it to the modern day.

I thought the great auk was a reference to the Fáed Fíada prayer.

Indeed it is! But I also like to add some historical references as well, especially since something like the Great Auk only went extinct during the 1840s, a blip when you consider how long the Auk has lived alongside humans before overhunting eventually did them in.
