So, for today’s warmups, I drew perhaps my favorite character in Raya and The Last Dragon... The Actual Last Dragon herself... Sisu.
Much like what happened with Soul and the community’s tendencies to jump-the-gun and start being *extremely* bad faith without actually seeing how the design actually looks and feels in motion.
As an storyboarder (and a guy from the SEA region) this *irks* me. And lo and behold, the Soul-world aspects of Soul actually looked really nice in motion and Sisu turned out to be one of my favorite characters, because she is both funny and relevant to the plot and message. She was a mentor figure that brought out a lot of laughs. Which is always good. Do I have my own issues with her design? Totally! Do I want to make a bad faith take that disparges the hard work and effort of multiple people? Heck no.
Still, I can’t help myself to give my own flair to Sisu.
So, I made two versions of Sisu, one based off canon, and the other based off my own personal Indonesian biases. The goal was to keep her personality intact while keeping it different. You see, Javanese Dragons have rather elaborate horns that double as crowns, and are almost always scaly and limbless. Here I kept the scales, as I always love good dragons that are scaly with fangs. I also kept her arms/paws, as It’s a great way to evoke emotion.
