“Alright what do we know so far?” Ben asked, the back of a pen caught between his lips while he kicked his legs up so his feet were resting on his desk, glancing at the rough timeline Tom had typed up based on the two cases.
“October 11, 2018, Lindsay Johnson is presumably abducted. That’s a Thursday. Friday night, around 9:30pm, Officer Wilson said her parents got a weird text from her that said she had a class run late and she’d get a train ride home Saturday morning.” Tom explained, Ben’s eyes widening in realization.
“She had classes on Friday. The teachers said she didn’t show up. I remember that.” He pointed out, Tom nodding in agreement.
“Which is why the text about a class running late is even weirder.” Tom noted. “Her parents at the time didn’t know she didn’t show up to classes, so they weren’t too concerned. Figured she went out to a party or something and was just making something up.”

Tom sighed, sitting at his desk. He felt relief course through his veins, letting his head fall back. He always felt a sense of pride when he closed a case, this one was no different. People coming up to him, patting him on the back and congratulating him. Some colleagues invited him out for drinks, but he would always politely decline or lie and say he has plans that night. Tom wasn’t a people person. He enjoyed spending time with his close friends and family, but he wasn’t keen on spending time with people he didn’t know too well, especially his colleagues. He knew their praises and their invitations to go out for drinks were fake. They only asked to cover the underlying frustration and anger towards the homicide detective. Tom investigated any and all homicides. No matter who committed it. This meant he had put away some of his (now former) colleagues. Some of them got life in prison, some got ten to twenty years. Tom didn’t really follow the trials unless he had to testify, but he did help out and make damn sure they went away for a long time.
Putting cops away for murder was disgraceful to the other cops. Often times they’d accept or even encourage the use of violence in the streets, even when it wasn’t necessary. They looked at Tom with disgust. Besides putting their fellow cops away for a long time, Tom wasn’t from around there. He had moved from London to New York after completing his undergraduate degree in criminal justice and psychology. Once he got to New York, he got his masters in criminal justice and entered the academy.
He immediately proved himself worthy and was given the position of homicide detective. He beat out dozens of other people who wanted a position in that unit, it made them frustrated. Tom had been there since he was 20. He was 22 now and he still had yet to make a friend in his job.

It was Tom’s tossing and turning that woke you up. Turning around to face him, you noticed his back was facing you and you frowned. Tom’s sniffles broke the silence and your heart broke, knowing he either couldn’t sleep because of a case or he woke up from a nightmare about one.

Y/N puckered her lips, applying the bright red lipstick. Glancing in the mirror one last time, she grabbed her bag, packed with her notebooks and pens and headed out the door of her apartment.
Tom was looking through case files when Y/N came in, sitting herself down on his desk. “How many times do I have to tell you I don’t talk to reporters.” He mumbled, making Y/N roll her eyes. “How many times do I have to tell you I’m not the majority of reporters who want to talk to you.” She replied, Tom glancing up from his case files. The two of them had a complicated relationship- they didn’t really like each other unless they had a little too much to drink at a bar but they didn’t hate each other either.
To Tom there was just something so mysterious about her, something that made him want to change his typical ‘no talking to reporters’ rule. Maybe it was her soft Y/E/C eyes that held so much determination in them. Or maybe it was the fact that she was short but fiercer than anyone he knew.
