ever since i read that brook and sanji get up at 5 am, there's been two possibilities in my mind:

1. Brook gets up naturally at that hour and then Sanji starts to do it too because he's not gonna leave one of his crewmates without breakfast longer than necessary

2. Sanji already had the habit of waking up at 5 to start prepping breakfast and Brook gets up too to keep him company

Definitely the latter.

Headcanon:

In the early days, before roles had really been solidified, watch was a haphazard mess, if they even remembered to keep watch. But Zoro's always been a night owl, and Sanji'd never kicked the routine of the Baratie. Mornings are for prep, and the earlier you can get started, the smoother your day can go.

But once Robin and Chopper join, and the crew starts to settle into something approaching proper watch routines. Usopp and Nami can be counted on to spot anything of import during the day. Robin's going to be up late reading anyway, she doesn't mind doing it from the upper deck or crow's nest. Zoro -- well, he used to spend his nights logging in an extra training shift when he was at the dojo, and he's not doctoring or cooking or navigating during the day -- he takes the overnight.

Call it rivalry or call it consideration, Sanji's gonna be up at 5am no matter what to relieve him of duty. His instincts have never let him miss a threat, not even when he's deep in his groove in the kitchen -- maybe especially not then.

It takes Brook a while to figure out how he can be useful on the ship. No one asks him to be -- which drives him a little crazy. And the Straw Hats run both a lackadaisical, haphazard sort of operation but also a very tight ship. Everyone has a place and a role, but most of it's unspoken, and very often it relies on a sudden cue from Nami.

But company is something Brook can lend. And it's something he's very often missed.

He's learned that Robin and Zoro value their quiet in the night. But Sanji always greets Brook's songs with a gentle smile and a warm cup of tea.
