I’d like to see more scifi names than First Name Last Name or Alien With a Single Name. You’ve got an entire universe out there. There is absolutely no reason for everyone to stick to the same old traditions. Even within Europe you have all sorts of different customs—British naming conventions are not the same as Spain are not the same as Russia—but is any of this utilized? Not really!
I’m not even asking that much with regards to variations on naming conventions. Like the Bajorans! Ro Laren is introduced, and Ro is her family name and Laren is her given name, and she insists that people respect this. (This, admittedly, falls into alien monocultures, but that’s a complaint for another time.) This isn’t anything novel—Chinese names are like this, as are Japanese, and other languages, too—but it’s a variation we don’t see anywhere near enough.
I just want some differences. (And fandom stopping its insistence on forcing new names onto characters who don’t necessarily fit into a box they’re familiar with would be nice, too.)
