the president isn’t our benevolent parent, or our friend, or even our leader. they’re a component of a machine that we all have to function within. we work and live and fight for causes, and the president can either make that harder or easier. they don’t save us—we save ourselves, with or without their help.
so when people celebrate biden coming into office, many of them are simply celebrating the potential for a future where that component of the machine is less of an obstacle, and though in most cases it’ll remain an obstacle of some kind, the hope is that on a few occasions it’ll help instead of hinder.
