Just saw someone describe themselves as neurotypical, then list their mental health issues. Uh…what do you think neurotypical means?
They might be mixing it up with Neuro*A*typical, since it is only a one letter difference.
no but also a lot of ppl think that Neurodivergent is a synonym for autistic (+ maybe other DD?) but doesn’t include mental health stuff or even LDs or TBI, etc.
or at least they think that NT means “not autistic” which yeah i admit we use it like that sometimes... but for me if i use it like that it means “not autistic and also can’t even relate to autistic stuff because they don’t have any other non-average neurological stuff going on” but that’s kinda long, so i say NT.
so what i mean is that apparently the big-umbrella use of ND has declined, which i think is sad. it was is a good solidarity word.
i also feel sad about the use of NeuroAtypical, (1) because NeuroDivergent sounds more bad-ass and (2) because unless ppl do the thing with the capitals that i did here, i can’t notice the difference between the 2 opposites neuro(a)typical, as @andreashettle pointed out. (however, if a person really wants to identify as neuroatypical, on principle i can’t tell them they shouldn’t.)
