i can't believe they managed to make Con O'Neill bleeding in another man's lap so unenjoyable to me

ofmd 2x08 spoilers
you do the holding Charleston hostage bit, and it's to get medicine for Izzy, who is on land and can't be moved. the crew goes on the errand because they love him.
but you leave Ed retired on land – because he can't take it any more, he really can't; he's had his breakdown and he's been trying to stop for so, so long anyway, so it's here, this is the breaking point for him. he's a shivering wreck. he came out of the ocean in his leathers ready to be a monster once more and after that day when he decided to personally, intimately murder a bunch of people – without being able to lie to himself that it wasn't wasn't *him* really who killed them – he has to stop. it's not his simple fisherman innkeeper bar-owner life: it just has to not be Blackbeard at sea, and it has to be now
but also in a problem reminiscent of the riddle about how you get the fox and the chicken across the river without chicken getting eaten: you can't leave Ed alone with Izzy. neither of them could take it, and frankly Izzy and the crew don't think it's safe for him to be alone with Ed. who do you leave there who can keep Ed in line? well Stede, obviously!
Stede is not thrilled that he's on land instead of going on this super cool raid, but he does love being paternalistic toward anyone, and here are two people he cares for who clearly could use help! also he always wants to see Ed, he thinks they should always be fucking
throughlines:
- Stede wants to keep going passionate and hard with Ed. Ed continues to be the responsible one suggesting that maybe he needs some room to breathe and pull himself together. Izzy finds it fascinating and uncharacteristic and, out of Ed's sight, harangues Stede to recognize how monumental this is for Ed and if for no other reason than that he *needs* to live by Ed's request
- Ed has to do a lot, a lot for Izzy. he doesn't do it directly – that's part of the "don't leave them alone together" deal, Stede changing bandages, doing all the intimate physical care kinds of things – but Ed is making sure they have clean drinking water. and boiling linens. and cooking very bad soup from the supplies that the crew left them. and making himself put up a crooked shitty roof where Izzy can rest out of the rain even though he's shit at it and it's sooo boring. he's doing a lot of the silent work that Izzy did for so many years for Ed. he comes to understand he's doing it not as repayment for the work, nor restitution for the leg – but because he's proving his love for Izzy, holding instead of just having, in sickness now not health
- Ed accepts comfort from Stede and exhausted bastard affectionate comments floating up from Izzy's pallet on the floor, and the support is important. but Ed has been thinking about all the shit he's heard Izzy say about how, after he took care of him all those years, he handed the duty over to Stede; and Stede is, in fact, being a paternalistic ass about it a lot of the time – and he concludes, correctly, that this part is fucking bullshit. he is an adult person who is intense and sometimes dangerous but he needs *support* from people, not to be in care or to be managed. ffs.
- Stede thinks a lot about what adventure means, and what kind of important and romantic stories matter and how you can live them out. how maybe there isn't any one "right" answer for what your life should be, and you don't have to jump anxiously from one choice to the next just because you thought you were getting it wrong before and actually you can stop and talk to people around you and trust them to help you figure out what you're really worried about, without being afraid to show all your cards or cede your control of a situation lest people pelt you with rocks or force you to be married
fine this isn't about Charleston any more. maybe I'd still send Jim or Frenchie as Blackbeard up to get the drugs, but maybe they'd just sail away for a month to adventure then come back after the OT3 get-together is complete and it's time for the three of them to do all the things they'd decided on, together.
... s2, amirite?
"Don't do it, Stede. Killing in cold blood...You can't come back from that."
They got lost :( They’re looking for their captains :(
hey now
i love that Izzy is canonically appearing soundlessly in rooms to freak Stede out despite his peg leg (and crutch)
Whatever you do, don't think about the moment Frenchie thought Blackbeard had killed Izzy
I'm fine this is fine
The way you can tell Izzy knows exactly what Ed is asking of him the second he tries to hand over the gun, but Ed goes "no man, I had a whole little speech planned to make this both poignant and kinda gruesome whimsical and you're gonna listen to it"
go on, Bonnet, give me your worst.
