On 22 February 1980, three men from the neofascist Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari group, pretended to be Verbano's friends in order to gain entry to his home. They tied and gagged Verbano's parents before waiting for Verbano to return from school. When he did so, they shot him dead, and his murderers escaped.
