Wander Over Yonder: The Greater Hater

Oh my gosh, guys. I don’t know if this has been pointed out yet, but Wander never refers to Lord Dominator as a guy. He uses they/them pronouns. HE DOESN’T ASSUME LORD DOMINATOR IS A GUY.

Okay one more gushing post about the Wander premiere. Look at Lord Dominator’s gorgeous ship and robots, the coloring and design work is so phenomenal it’s SICKENING.

And then there’s the character herself; the most dangerous conqueror and destroyer of worlds in the known galaxy is just a colossal dork roleplaying her male evil overlord OC in real life.

In addition to being hilarious, Wander over Yonder is easily the most beautiful, fantastically directed cartoon I’ve probably ever lived to see. I wasn’t even as big on McCracken’s other shows as everyone else seemed to be, but he was definitely talented as hell, and in this series he achieves what feels like perfection.

And it SUCKS that it’s been getting only half as many viewers as Gravity Falls. It is terrible that so many people apparently turn off the TV after their Grunkle fix, because you are missing out.

Even if you only get into cartoons with an ongoing story and character development, Wander has  that too. Lord Hater is a hilarious, adorable, many-layered, tragically insecure villain who’s shown increasing vulnerability over the course of the first season, and as of the season 2 premiere, now has to contend with Lord Dominator, a teenage girl who outclasses him in every way and poses a hardcore, deadly threat to the whole galaxy.

This season is also set to explore the pasts of Hater and Wander, introduce even MORE villains and build more of a universe, so please please give it a chance next time you’re watching The Adventures of Bill Cipher and Friends.

In honor of all the Dominator fan art that’s already appearing, I thought I’d post her theme.  You know, so you have something to listen to while drawing her.

Craig and I started talking about her music well before season 2 began.  Since she’s such a big part of the season, she needed her own sound.  Craig showed me some art, described what she’s all about, and suggested her theme have an industrial feel to match her big scary lava suit and robot army.  And as with everything about Dominator, we wanted her music to be WAY tougher and more menacing than Hater’s music.

Here’s the original theme demo I worked up, which we used pretty much unchanged all over The Greater Hater.  Enjoy!
