while i can mainly only speak for sapphic playlists, ive noticed in general that the lgbt playlists were making are really white, cover heavy and… straight?

so heres a (very unabridged) list of lgbt musicians that deserve to be on your playlists way more than that cover of lego house. in alphabetical order:

and if your tastes skew older there’s elton john, the iconic “known gay,” freddie mercury (from queen) is parsi and bisexual, and debbie harry (from blondie) is bisexual

Brendan Maclean, super great, catchy as HECK, his song “Stupid” was the weather on WTNV once so you may already have heard his music. From his FB page: “Solo singer-songwriter and vocalist for international queer music movement: Stereogamous.”

Tacocat: if I’m not mistaken, one of the band members is LGBT+. Feminist punk group! From Wikipedia: “…the song “Hey Girl” uses sarcasm to mock street harassment, and the song “This is Anarchy” mocks the politics of white male skinheads. The song “Crimson Wave” is a period-positive beach anthem featuring red imagery and humorous menstruation metaphors.” Associated group: Childbirth.

and finally my FUCKING FAVORITE: PWR BTTM: (from wikipedia:) “American queer punk duo,” also described as queercore. Look at their twitter, too, they’re just great and I love them and their songs are so fucking great man. Here’s the first song I heard by them, I Wanna Boi.

If your tastes skew even older, many of the greatest of the great Black female classic (aka 1920s) blues singers were openly queer, including the voraciously bisexual Bessie Smith; the butch-presenting Ma Rainey (”They say I do it, ain’t nobody caught me/Sure got to prove it on me; Went out last night with a crowd of my friends/They must’ve been women, ‘cause I don’t like no men”); the fabulously filthy Lucille Bogan, whose “BD [Bulldagger] Blues” claims ”Comin’ a time, B.D. women they ain’t going to need no men”; and Alberta Hunter, who had a life-long female partner and will break your heart into a million pieces with “Old Fashioned Love.” Even Billie Holiday had affairs with women, including (in common with basically every woman who ever came into contact with her, as far as I can tell) Tallulah Bankhead. 

Also the great Billy Strayhorn, longtime Duke Ellington collaborator and composer of “Take the ‘A’ Train” and many more jazz standards, was openly gay. Harlem in the 20s had a thriving queer scene, including drag balls where female impersonators like Frankie Jaxon and Johnnie Woods would perform, and many men came dressed in evening gowns.

Slightly later, Big Mama Thornton was a rumored lesbian and definitely gender-nonforming, and was one of the most influential yet often uncredited performers of the early rock & roll era. (How surprising, that her swagger & her “Hound Dog” would be more palatable to the general public once appropriated by a pretty white man in the form of Elvis Presley. I know we’re all shocked.) 

actually wait i want to talk about the weird Tree Orbs i found while i was visiting my family a while back

they were everywhere, attached to a lot of the oak leaves on the ground and nobody had Any idea what they actually were, so i took em home and did a little digging

in fact the balls are called oak apple galls, and are caused by WASPS. actual literal wasps are directly responsible for these tiny tree eggs, and inside of them are, you guess it, More Wasps

the insect responsible is called the oak apple gall wasp, and the growth ( which is initially bright green) is caused by chemicals injected along with the wasps egg directly into the center vein of the leaf. eventually the round outer husk forms with the tiny wasplet inside, who lives in and eats the gall until it emerges later as an adult wasp

the lifecycle of em actually starts at the ROOTS of the oak tree instead of right with the leaves - whatever adult wasp that manages to stay alive long enough to lay its eggs puts em directly at the bottom of the tree, where they hatch into larvae that eventually molt into all-female wingless wasps. THEN these wasps crawl up the tree every spring and put ANOTHER egg into the leaf, and the whole thing starts all over again. seems like a lot more steps than necessary but im also not a wasp what do i know 

the apple galls are mostly hollow when you crack em open and look an awful lot like a tiny shaved kiwi filled with string, but theres actually many species of gall wasp that all cause different distinctive growths along their chosen plant, like the artichoke gall wasp

and the beaked twig gall wasp

and others ! the growths themselves dont usually damage the plant though and the wasps are entirely stingless, so if youve got a bunch of these things around your house and had no idea they were filled with little flying bugs until Just Now, no worries
