It makes me a little sad...
... when I see people who chose to resent a franchise simply for being popular. Of course you’re entitled to your opinion, but is it too much to ask that you base it on something substantial...?
I recognize the annoyance in being repeatedly exposed to references and images that you don’t understand. Trust me, I’ve been there oh so many times, and it’s very frustrating… What I don’t understand are people who actually prefers to dislike something they know nothing about, rather than giving it a chance and see why lots of folks seem to dig it.
If it hadn’t been for my curiosity being slightly more powerful than my reluctance, I would never have experienced all those things that today make me really happy: Harry Potter, Star Trek, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, My little pony… I’m just so glad that I didn’t let the popularity of those fandoms discourage me from checking them out. It would feel a bit like deliberately choosing bitterness over happiness, and that just doesn’t make sense to me.
My point with this? Oh, um… It’s simple, really. You don’t have to read up on every fandom you encounter. I sure don’t. But if you get to the point where you start to hate a franchise just for being widespread and liked by many, then perhaps you want to look it up properly first. In best case scenario, you might discover something that you actually like! Worst case scenario, you don’t like it at all. That’s fine too. You gave it a fair chance, and it wasn’t for you. At least now you can properly explain to people exactly why you’re not a fan of this thing. Instead of stating that you don’t like it because it’s everywhere and you don’t know what it is…
I nearly missed out on some of my favorite things by being pessimistically stubborn, and I’d hate for that to happen to someone else.
