Story Time!

My father, who is an identical twin, has two older sisters who were also identical twins. My grandfather’s favourite way to tell the story was that in 1956 when he was awaiting the arrival of 🤷‍♀️ Child™️, the doctor (who, in the small town where we’re from, had delivered my aunts a few years earlier) came to the lounge, lit a cigarette and took a seat next to him.

“Clifford… how are ya?” the doctor greeted.

“I’m alright… yourself?”

“Good, good…good, so how many ya want this time?”

My grandfather, even in the retelling of the story heaved the most world weary sigh and said, “…how many ya got?”

fun fact: in the original Snow White, her mother wished only to have a child "white as snow, black as ebony, and red as blood" (after pricking her finger while sewing and letting the blood drip out of her ebony-framed window into the snow). Snow White ended up with snow-white skin, black hair, and red cheeks and lips. However, there are a total of six possible outcomes with this setup:

white skin, black hair, red lips: the classic. 10/10 (baseline)

white skin, red hair, black lips: cool if you're into ginger goths I guess. 8/10

black skin, white hair, red lips: I think this one is discussed in some other post. very cool juxtaposition of dark skin/light hair. 10/10

black skin, red hair, white lips: edging a little into uncanny valley territory here. still a fan of the dark skin and red hair. 7/10

red skin, black hair, white lips: not good at all. reminder that "red" means "blood red" here. thoroughly unnerving. 3/10

Slavs and Vikings Festival in Wolin, Poland

The Slavs and Vikings Festival is one of the largest early-medieval events in the world. There are archery and spear-throwing competitions, games and contests for kids, craft-making presentations demonstrating how jewelry, coins, horns, and amber were created, live music, readings, and much more.

Wolin is a town located on Poland’s largest island (of the same name) on the coast of the Baltic Sea. It's a City of History, whose glory days date back to 1000 years ago. In the early Middle Ages, it was one of the largest and most powerful cities in this part of Europe, and ranked among the most important ports of the Baltic Sea. Wolin is considered to have been the gateway through which Scandinavians traveled southwards from the Baltic Sea to inland Piast state.
