OOOOH and #18 for The Dragon Speaker and/or Burn Away The Dross and Find the Silver

Avatar

Aha, you are so great. This was fun to think about. :D

If you wrote a sequel to [insert fic], what would it involve?

This was a great one to ponder. I think if I was to write a sequel [big IF since you know how many things I have in the works xD] it would need to be The Dragon Speaker. I would like to allow more dragons to show up and the Lady could interact with the younger hatchlings I introduced in the first one.

I would give Firmus and Sola another kid or maybe two. It would be enjoyable to explore them having a son [other than dear adopted Matthew] and allow their children to be more a part of the story.

Obviously, Max and Myra would be together at this point and have Zev.

Leia enlists cocky ship captain Solo to help them out.

Rather than do another battle theme, I think I'd do an adventure/mystery---something like Piett's ship disappears, so Sola and Myra and the kids have to go looking for all their people on Solo's ship with the help of the dragons.

Turns out there's some mysterious ancient threat [not sure yet] that our boys have been fighting or are prisoners to, one or the other. Massive escape, fight scene featuring young dragons and Force wielding Skywalkers etc.

Romantic Leia and Han ending somehow. ;D

Thanks for this friend!

Avatar

Why friend, it would be a pleasure, thank you!!

What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics?

Haha. My top tags usually fill this in too. I am a creature of habit. But you know how I feel about friendship. I think that's my topmost one. Even when I write a romance, I always begin with the friendship aspect and build on that. We call that slow burn in our circles, I know, but I also think it's just a better way to go. The insta passion stuff can happen---I don't deny--but I enjoy reading slow burn and friendship building more. So I write it.

I also love bromance tremendously, so my characters consistently demonstrate their loyalty and care for each other in my work.

While I enjoy fluff in it's place, I like to put my people THROUGH it more. I enjoy my heroes and heroines having to really struggle in various ways, because the pay off is sweeter. So I'm usually writing adventure fics or drama, etc over fluffy fics because I like to develop that. I sprinkle comfort and fluff in, of course, but it's not the main theme.

What detail in [insert fic] are you really proud of?

Hmm. I've written a fair bit, so I have to ponder this. xD I think it would have to be something that is consistent with a character throughout my fics. And that is developing Piett's little physical habits a character. So he straightens his spine when he's facing difficult things. He lifts his chin when there's a challenge. He runs a hand through his hair because he's self conscious about curls. He tugs his uniform jacket because the uniform is his armor and he needs it to be perfect. He flushes when people compliment him because he doesn't know how to receive praise.

What's your favorite AU that you've written?

Gack. That's hard. I mean technically all my work is AU. xD However, if we go with my OWN AUs outside of Empire Reimagined....Yeah still hard. LOL. How about this----at the MOMENT [subject to change]---I'd need to go with The Dragon Speaker. I am pleased with my word craft and world building for that fic. It was my first of only two true fantasies I've written, and I am pleased with it. Also, it was so very fun to have the Lady as a dragon and equip all my people with swords and magic and so on.

What’s an AU you would love to read (or have read and loved)?

I'm copy/pasting my answer to this from another lovely reader.

Oh this is easy I’m glad to say. I ADORE Frodogenic’s Meet The Skywalkers AU. The author allows the Executor and everyone on it to survive but they get lost for 25 years and have to get back to known space. It’s hilarious and in line with Zahn’s work. I adore the odd couple friendship Built between Vader and his Admiral. I can’t recommend the story enough.

Thank you friend!

For the fic writer asks: 2, 6 (for a fic of your choice), 26 (I swear I did not make the numbers come out that way on purpose), 36 (I PROMISE I'M NOT DOING THAT ON PURPOSE), and 37 (whew, broke the pattern).

Avatar

lol. Thank you friend!

Go to your AO3 “Works” page, to the sidebar with all the filters, and click the drop-down arrow for “Additional Tags.” What are your top 3-5 most used tags? Do you think they accurately represent your writing habits?

All right the top five in order are: angst, hurt/comfort, friendship, drama, action/adventure.

I’m chuckling because yep—-those are SPOT ON. They sum up any given work. 😂😂 I do like a healthy dose of humor and sarcasm from my characters as well.

What’s one fact about the universe of [insert fic] that you didn’t get a chance to mention in the fic itself?

In my Star Wars western, it would have been fun to get into Piett’s background and origin but it wasn’t relevant to plot points so I didn’t. However, I head canon that he’s from a Russian immigrant family which came to America in the 1820s and settled in New York. Firmus is a second generation American and proudly joined the US military post Civil War.

Would you rather write a fic that had no dialogue or one that was only dialogue?

Ok both options pain me, but I’d have to go with no dialogue. Because at least I could convey emotion in face and body as I described a situation. I shudder to think about writing like that though! 😂😂

Do you visualize what you read/write?

Absolutely. I can’t not actually 😂 I play things out in my head like a movie. I’ll say dialogue aloud to sound test and even look at my expressions in a mirror to better describe how a character is reacting. I’ll catch myself making expressions I’m describing as I write too😂

And when I read, I have an internal scene playing out. A great author has the right balance of descriptions and dialogue. I have vivid pictures in my head—-years later—-from excellent books I’ve read.

Promote one of your own “deep cut” fics (an underrated one, or one that never got as much traction as you think it deserves!). What do you like about it?

Hmm. Well, I’m truly ok with being small potatoes. I’m well aware that I’m in a more obscure corner of the Star Wars sandbox so by nature I won’t get as much traction.

That being said, I’d like to plug A Star To Steer By. This is my Star Wars British navy AU and I had SUCH fun researching the age of sail and HOW to sail as well as illustrate Piett and Veers in the glorious uniforms of the period. It was so delightful to put all my characters into this time period and it was my first story with digital art as well. I have a lot of happy memories from writing it.

For the five fun facts prompt game:

The Skywalker family (optional bonus Han Solo and/or assorted Imperials) in the plot of The Mummy? (I had to sit and think for a minute to come up with an AU you hadn't already done, actually.)

Avatar

LOL. I have covered a fair gamut of AU ideas. Thank you for this friend!

  1. Leia loves being a librarian and weaponizing this knowledge at exceedingly boring upper crust parties. She's rubbish with a pistol but incredible with a sword and loves her brother even when he's a fathead.
  2. Luke crashes his cars on a regular basis, not because he isn't good at driving but because technology in the 1920s is not able to give him the speeds he'd like to go. It's frankly miraculous he's not been more seriously injured. Given that Anakin Skywalker disappeared years ago during the Great War and is presumed dead, Luke honors him by continuing the passion for automobiles and driving.
  3. Han Solo REALLY didn't want to go with the crazy Brits on this dumb ass mission to Hamunaptra, but hey it got him out of prison and being hanged. He has to unfortunately travel with Warden Jabba who wants his share of this spectacular treasure, but Han figures he can give Jabba the slip when this is over. Besides, the insane librarian is sort of cute in an obsessive, bossy way.
  4. This mysterious Darth Vader who leads the Medjai is eventually recognized by Luke and Leia as their long lost father. His memory was affected and he joined the Medjai shortly after his medical release from the military in 1916. He and his band must now help to defeat the horrific power of Palpatine, the High Priest, whom Leia accidentally resurrected. Somehow, he returned after all. ;D
  5. It's a narrowly won fight and the Skywalkers and Solo are glad of the help of the Medjai. Luke discovers that his insane driving instincts translate well to sprinting through tunnels ahead of mummy zombies, while Leia discovers that certain Americans are quite charming when they're fighting back to back for their lives. Anakin decides to stay with his band in Egypt, among whom are some very competent fighters named Firmus and Max, but he promises to visit his children in England soon.

Aw yay, you are the greatest. Thank you for this!

Cactus---Aha. You and your sister think alike. See my answer to her for the playlist. :D

The last thing I wrote in my notes app was the phone number of a lady I met at a wedding so we could invite her to dinner. We did and it was a lovely time. :D She mentioned she knew my mom, so we were with my parents too and off they went down the 'do you remember' train. So fun to watch! :D

This is still my favorite piece and you know I've drawn a lot now. But I am really happy with how this one turned out. His expression is so tender and I feel like I got the essence of them both and how I see their father-daughter relationship. Here tis:

There's loads of amazing art out there, and I cannot possibly recall it all, so thus I stuck with my own and these two. ;D

Thank you so much for these asks, my friend! :D

🍓🌵🥤🔪🪲 for the ask game!

Avatar

As ever, you are so great for asking. ;D

Rubs hands. This is such a fun list.

Strawberry: I started reading fanfic quite late in the game. I was craving more Merlin actually and so found fanfic.net back in 2009. Old, I know. xD

So I have been reading it for a while, but I never had any intention to write mostly because time constraints. Flash forward to all the Covid shutdowns of 2020. I was at home and for whatever reason I rewatched Star Wars again. And then Piett walked in and I saw him with fresh eyes. So I began hunting for fanfic about him and there was precious little. Literally, that first story wrote me I didn't write it. The feeling was like being dragged behind a high speed train and I was writing for HOURS. Posted a chapter every day. xD And you know quite well how it feels to put a new baby story out there and see what happens. Direct shot of serotonin to my brain when people began reading and then COMMENTING. I was hooked. And haven't stopped though my pace has slowed considerably. xD

Playlist I love---See while I totally listen to music, the playlist I have is too massive because I am old and lazy and just keep piling things into the liked list. xD But here---this one I found recently and it is GREAT for angst stuff, or pining, or slow burn, etc. :D

Recommend an author: Ok the best Star Wars I've ever read was hands down Meet the Skywalkers by frodogenic, which focuses on Piett interacting both with Vader and his kids AND grandkids. It had the full range of MASTERFUL emotion and I was laughing and crying throughout. A close second which features Piett and Veers is This Time of Year, by impishgrin. It hits their friendship so hard and so well and this author gave Myra Veers her name and the backstory I assume to be canon. :D

Weirdest topic I've researched: Ha. A lot of contenders there, though admittedly most of them were random and niche as opposed to outright weird. I'll settle on investigating the plumbing situation in the American West of the 1880s. xD I was trying to figure out if any homes in the plains would have been able to have running indoor water. And lo---yes they could if one was wealthy enough.

Aha--the beetle. Devious, my friend. All right, here we are:

Damn it. There was no other opportunity to speak to her, and I was haunted throughout the rest of the feast by the desperate fight the man had put up. He he’d had no chance, no hope, of truly escaping. But he’d fought so hard… My chest hurt as I thought of him even now.

Decided to test myself and write in first person for the first time. :D

Thank you so much for this!! :D

Oh thank you so much friend. Here we are:

6. What fic surprised you with how little interaction it got this past year?

Haha, this is a good question, but I have to be honest. I really don't enter the publishing part of writing looking too closely at the interaction with certain expectation. I write in a fairly niche part of the Star Wars sandbox, so I never go in expecting mass amounts of hits. ;D

That being said, I would have enjoyed more interaction with Men and Empires, but I have been doing this long enough to know that my history AUs primarily featuring two more obscure characters are not going to get high hit counts. And that is perfectly all right. The people who read are always a delight, because I can count on them usually ALSO having a history interest. :D

8. What’s your favorite work you posted this past year?

Ahh!! Anytime I’m asked about a favorite work I have the worst time because I like them all for different reasons!!

But I think it needs to be Burn Away the Dross and Find the Silver. I decided to write a full on romance/slow burn/arranged marriage AU for Firmus and Sola. I LOVED allowing the two of them to try and make the best of a bad situation and, of course, slowly fall in love with each other. It was also a fic where I had Anakin and Padme’ happily married without tragedy, as well as Veers.

10. What are your writing goals for the upcoming year?

Definitely intend to finish the two longer WIP I'm in the midst of publishing. I am deeply enjoying the Multifaceted series and have numerous outlines ready to go for that so it should be showing up fairly regularly. And I'm tackling some original work which I haven't done in a LONG time, so I'm chuffed about that. :D

#2, 6, 15, and 18 for the fic writer ask game, please!!

Avatar

Have I mentioned before that you are the coolest for asking me things about my writing? Thank you friend. :D

2. What fanfic do I wish I got more response on?

I think that has to go to my Star Wars Western---Showdown At Alliance Ranch. I had SUCH fun with it and I really worked the research and descriptions. But it is admittedly a very niche thing, so I'm at peace with its humble hit count. :D

6. Have you written any fanfiction featuring OCs? Elaborate.

Ha. This is hilarious coming from you. You're just handing me a microphone and smirking because you KNOW about this. ;D So. Stretches fingers.

Why yes. Yes I HAVE written OCs. xD AND featured them! This is an amusing one, because when I started writing here, particularly the Empire Reimagined series, I was determined not to do any OCs. I think I found so many of them rather shoe horned in with other works and I didn't want my stories to feel like that. I liked the feel of the original canon characters. However, we all grow don't we? And it made sense in my AU to have more characters to make the galaxy more three dimensional. Doctor Henley was the first OC and there was NO WAY he was going to let me just use him and lose him. So even early in my writing, I broke this little private rule and carefully put in a few OCs. Henley, as mentioned. Then Braxten, a medic, and Sergeants Havel and Ellery.

However, in terms of FEATURING one. That didn't happen until my young friend, Matthew Scraps, showed up. I had once again written him as a nice little filler character. A newbie to interact with canon characters in a one shot. But then, I needed some characters for a short series I did featuring Commander Fox and I thought---hey. This would make sense and we've seen him before.

I'm not sure when the idea of putting him on as the head of Piett's security squad hit my brain, but when it did, I realized I had someone I had made indispensable. And then he and Piett developed this wonderful father-son energy. The rest, as they say, is history.

15. Are there words, mannerisms, phrases or scenes you tend to use a lot?

Ha there sure are. I'll try to stay brief. I love thinking of Piett and Veers as exceedingly British. I mean---the actors ARE so that shapes the way I portray them. Thus, both are fairly understated in the wonderful way that the Brits can be, especially when faced with fearful odds. ;D Veers tends to convey a great deal with his 'Iron General' persona. Piett has very expressive eyes and eyebrows so I utilize that a lot in my work. I love having him do little things like tug his jacket into place or rub at his temple to convey various emotions. I find that the way people hold their mouths is very effective with conveying feeling: chewing a lip, pressing them together, allowing the edge to curl a little, scrunching a bit in distaste etc.

In terms of scenes---I have to follow a hurt with a comfort. It may not be right away, but I find I'm not an author that can do hurt no comfort very often at all. So my fics usually have a concluding wrap up with people where they should be, a conversation that needs to happen or healing etc. I love a good confrontation scene between characters and have done a lot of those.

Phrases. Well. Piett will always call Leia 'my dear' and I like that he uses Scraps' full name. Always 'Matthew' not Matt. He and Veers use the 'Good Hunting' 'Safe Stars' when they have to split up to complete a mission. Piett also tends to use 'I'll endeavor' when instructed to do something and it's usually a somewhat playful response.

18. Recommend some else's fic [and tag them if they have a tumblr]

There are so many tremendous writers on here and I confess that I write more than read. But. I would HIGHLY recommend the incredibly talented @hollers-and-holmes. She has done phenomenal things with Tolkein fan work and is a Rembrandt with word painting.

Thank you again for this friend!!

For the writing ask:

#1. Which of your fics would you keept he basic plot of but rewrite completely? (If any)

#21. Can you accurately predict how long your fics are going to be? If you can, what's your secret?

And because I'm feeling mischievous tonight: #40 Write a 9-word fic

Avatar

You, my friend, are lovely. Thank you so much for this.

  1. I have to confess, after much thought, that I don't know if could do that. I suspect that if I was actually publishing and had an editor and a contract, etc, then yes, I would go in with a scalpel and do surgery. But because they represent a place I was as an author, I don't have a wish to change any of them. I like to go back and I do see ways I could improve of course. But I also love seeing where I've come and how I developed. So at this point I couldn't do it [call me soft and nostalgic] because I love my fics. ;D

21. Haha. Oh this question is good because my friends know I'm famous for saying 'oh this idea will be a short one!' and they all look at each other [through tumblr] and raise their eyes heavenward. ;D

Now, when there's a writing challenge, or I'm setting myself a writing challenge, I can limit my length. My fully fleshed out stories which I intend to have a very developed arc are averaging around 100k at the moment. xD

The one shots are usually about 2-3K.

And currently with this multifaceted series, I'm trying to keep things closer to the 10k mark. How successful I am is totally the fault of the muses because they'll discover some new aspect and I have to then develop it. ;D

40. This is good for me! Keeping me brief is a great challenge! xD Here you are---

Burning death. His son's touch. Anakin Skywalker lives again

Avatar

Hey, I don’t know if you ended up getting any of these, so…

20. Do you work on a single project or many at the same time? How does that work for you?

Avatar

This is so thoughtful. Thank you dear!

I always have more than one project on the burner at a time. xD This is usually a combo of fic and art. I have discovered this is helpful for me because if I have writer's block on one project, often working on another helps to both further that fic and make the the other project jealous so it gets more ideas. ;D

It's quite fabulous how ideas will pop into my head for the other stories while working on one of them. I can always pause and write those ideas down before I resume work on the current story.

And I have also realized---sometimes if all writing feels bleh, it's time to work on an art project. xD Get my brain into a very different mode, not to mention my hands. As I'm usually illustrating my stories, it's a joy to look at my characters' faces and draw inspiration from them for the writing.

Thank you so much for the ask!!

Thoughts on people writing fanfic of your fanfic?

Avatar

Great question! I've been very honored that other people want to join me in my little corner of the sandbox and I enjoy seeing what various writers have done with the AU I've created.

Obviously, I do appreciate being asked, and when it comes to my OCs I am also grateful to see them portrayed consistently.

So basically, I think it's lovely and I like knowing others have been inspired to write by my small efforts. :D

Thank you!

👻🔎💡🎯

I love your writing so much, and am waiting for the last chapter of the Clone Wars fic to come out, before I download it for my Kindle.

Avatar

You are the greatest. Thank you so much! And thank you for these asks. Sorry for the delay. Gestures at holidays. ;D

Ok, here we go.

What is my wildest head canon?

Hmm. I have to confess that I don't tend to be that wild. I think my head canons are rather tame. If we're going in line with the canon for SW, I like to think that Fox actually lived through Vader's attack on him [from the comics I understand] but that isn't too wild. ;D

Does any beta read or edit my fics?

Nope. All done by yours truly. I have two friends with whom I share pieces of my work. One has access to my google docs and if she likes she can add suggestions or editing which she's done very helpfully on occasion. And we'll bounce ideas off each other in text or help each other problem solve a plot issue. I confess I think I enjoy doing it that way, though I realize others really like having a beta. :D

How many WIPS do I have at the moment?

Goes to check docs. I have 5. One from the Hornblower universe and four for Star Wars. :D

I don't tend to have a million works because my style is to finish a certain amount before I plunge too far down other ideas. ;D

Do I have a writing milestone I'm working towards?

Not formally. Once in awhile I think that perhaps I should try an original novel or something, but I don't know that I have time right now. It surfaces enough though that I toy with ideas occasionally. In terms of fan fic---it's pure enjoyment and the hope that my creative spark will never die. I just really love telling stories about my people. ;D

Thanks so much!

Hi There!!!!

I’m just curious—in your works, who would you cast as Kelly, Ellery, and Baldwin?

P.S. I can’t wait for you to update The War In the Shadows—I left a comment under my Ao3 account, I’m mezo_Phane!

Can’t wait for Firmus to meet Sola!!!

Avatar

Well aren't you great for asking? :D I love thinking about this.

Ok, we'll start with Baldwin, my beloved. We will ignore the fact that Andor stole this actor, but I would cast Stellan Skarsgard. Add a beard and he has all the tough dad energy I picture for Baldwin.

Ellery is hard and I had to search before I found the guy with the right appearance and vibes. So I would cast Adam Copeland. He's a big guy like Ellery, but he doesn't come across as just brawn no brain.

Dear Kelly. I think the energy I want for him best comes from Andrew Garfield. I've pictured Kelly with dark hair as well so I like the idea of Garfield playing him.

And I'm so chuffed you're enjoying my WWII indulgence! thank you for the kind words!! Just updated as well. :D

And I'm also pleased you like the Sola/Firmus pairing. It's become a favorite of mine too.

Thanks so much for this ask!
