Where I write Star Wars, return to my artistic roots, and appreciate tall ships. In between wrangling muses I have a day job and adore baking. I’m on ao3 as wishfulthinking1979.

Years and years ago, I read a book on cryptography that I picked up because it looked interesting--and it was!

But there was a side anecdote in there that stayed with me for more general purposes.

The author was describing a cryptography class that they had taken back in college where the professor was demonstrating the process of "reversibility", which is a principle that most codes depend on. Specifically, it should be easy to encode, and very hard to decode without the key--it is hard to reverse the process.

So he had an example code that he used for his class to demonstrate this, a variation on the Book Code, where the encoded text would be a series of phone numbers.

The key to the code was that phone books are sorted alphabetically, so you could encode the text easily--picking phone numbers from the appropriate alphabetical sections to use ahead of time would be easy. But since phone books were sorted alphabetically, not numerically, it would be nearly impossible to reverse the code without exhaustively searching the phone book for each string of numbers and seeing what name it was tied to.

Nowadays, defeating this would be child's play, given computerized databases, but back in the 80s and 90s, this would have been a good code... at least, until one of the students raised their hand and asked, "Why not just call the phone numbers and ask who lives there?"

The professor apparently was dumbfounded.

He had never considered that question. As a result, his cipher, which seemed to be nearly unbreakable to him, had such an obvious flaw, because he was the sort of person who could never coldcall someone to ask that sort of thing!

In the crypto book, the author went on to use this story as an example of why security systems should not be tested by the designer (because of course the security system is ready for everything they thought of, by definition), but for me, as a writer, it stuck with me for a different reason.

It's worth talking out your story plot with other people just to see if there's a "Why not just call the phone numbers?" obvious plot hole that you've missed, because of your singular perspective as a person. Especially if you're writing the sort of plot where you have people trying to outsmart each other.

things that always make me happy: serial commenters. there are three types

1) reading a longfic chapter by chapter, leaving an increasingly emotional comment on every chapter, descends into keysmashes near the end: outstanding

2) read one fic by accident, clicked the author name, now working steadily through the backlog and commenting on everything, I wake up to an AO3 inbox full of enthusiasm: precious beyond words

3) the longterm serial commenter whose comment begins with I don’t even know this fandom but because they have followed me from somewhere else: stunning. humbling. magical.

these are all *chef’s kiss* and I want to add one more: 4) left a comment a while ago, comes back and leaves another comment on the same fic, telling you that they’re coming back to reread the fic: angels. blessings. lifesavers.

OK but real quick here: how many times can I comment on the same fic before it gets creepy???

is there anything better as a writer than an AO3 message that someone went through all your fics in a fandom? “[person] left kudos on [story1]. [person] left kudos on [story2]. [person] left kudos on [story3].” GLORIOUS. like you actually read words I wrote and thought “hmm, yes good, I will continue” and then did so. magical. i saw some Youths out there afraid this is “stalking” but as an Old let me tell you au contraire, it is a rare sweet nectar that warms our ancient dead hearts 💖

I can only second this emphatically. It’s a huge magical compliment gift under the tree

Fic Writer Tag Game

Tagged by @kanerallels Always a pleasure my friend, thank you! :D

First Fic-In terms of my first official published fan fic, that was He Who Sheds His Blood With Me. I wrote for years as a child and teenager---my mom had plastic bins of my stories and illustrations. We’ve purged over the years, but we still have some. The truly hilarious ones are the romances I wrote as a 13 year old. Meet! Hate each other! Love each other! Get married! All in the space of two days and a badly crafted detective fic! xD I wheeze reading them now.

But the shut down in 2020 for some reason triggered my dormant writing persona. I’d been reading fic for years. Suddenly I needed more of Piett and there wasn’t enough out there. The muse arrived and hasn’t left.

Softest Fic-- Hmm. Rough one for me. And if you know me, you know I live in Angst town, so.....a lot of my one shots are soft. Most things involving Piett and Leia are soft when they’re not being bad asses side by side. I’m going to have to go with When Man Needs A Best Friend---a modern Star Wars AU set in London.

Fic I’m Most Proud Of--- Again, hmmm. These asks are more challenging than I thought! Ok. I want to say Fidelity because I really like to go back and read my courtroom scenes and the brotherhood between Veers and Piett is on sharp display there in a way I’m proud of. On the other hand, A Star To Steer By was SUCH a joy to write, and I put HOURS of work into studying 19ty century sailing and naval tactics. I also did so many illustrations for that one. So. Those two, though I confess to loving all my work. I mean, these are our babies as authors right? Hard to have favorites. ;D

Fic That Shows My Progress---oh good question. In many ways, Mirjahaal I think. I stretched myself there with numerous characters and plot lines. However, I’m working on one right now that may be a better example [there will always be better examples as time passes ;D] because I’m going to dig deep into a ‘what if Piett and Veers met in the Academy?’ fic.

Favorite WIP--Can’t really say. I have literally four in the works right now and I love all of them for vastly different reasons.

Tagging with no pressure @winterinhimring, @oldshrewsburyian, @accidental-spice, @empirics, @angel-gidget, @mathmusic8, @banachtarskiparadox and anyone else who would like to play!
