CAIRO.- In this photo taken early Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, and made available Monday, Jan. 31, parts of unidentified mummies are seen damaged on the floor of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Egypt. Early Saturday morning, looters entered from the glass dome on the roof of the museum with ropes with the intention to loot antiquities. Civilian and army soldiers surrounded the museum and detained several looters. According the Egyptian army and Dr. Zahi Hawass, the chief of the Egyptian Antiquities Authority, no items were stolen, but several were damaged.

[WARNING: if you are squeamish about mummified people - esp. children - or medical anomalies don't click on the link. Read the synopsis and sleep well tonight...]

What can I say? I'm a sucker for these lists of unusual museums. Here's the list, with some choice quotes:

1. El Museo del las Momias

"Most of the mummies on display were corpses whose families could not afford to pay a grave tax levied on their families once they died. If you failed to pay the taxes, you guessed it..."

2. Catacombe dei Cappuccini: the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo, Sicily

"In 1599, the monks who lived here discovered a great new method for embalming the dead, and as the situation warranted, they went to work embalming each other."

3. The Glore Psychiatric Museum The picture above is a mosaic made from the stomach contents of a woman with compulsive swallowing at the Glore Psychiatric Museum, Missouri. "...the woman who swallowed those 1,446 objects died in surgery. So who the fuck made the mosaic?"

4. Museum of Menstruation & Women's Health, Maryland. "We're all adults here, hopefully. Menstruation isn't any more disgusting than the other bodily functions we don't discuss in polite company. So what's wrong with having a museum dedicated to the subject? How about the fact that it's in some random dude's basement in lower Maryland."

5. Vent Haven Museum in Kentucky "Everyone is scared of ventriloquist dummies. Like clowns, they're the result of a serious miscalculation about the desirable elements of children's entertainment. Most people wouldn't want to be alone in a room with one. Go to the Vent Haven Museum in Kentucky, though, and you can be alone in a room with 750 of them."

6. The Icelandic Phallological Museum "[In addition to penises from 100 different mammals] It also boasts penile specimens from various mythical characters such as elves, trolls and monsters." - incluing Elmo. Seriously!

7. The Mutter Museum It's really the accompanying pictures that do the talking with this one. But in short, it's a museum of medical anomalies and 'curiosities', airing strongly to the side of gruesome and shocking.
