Actually, you know what? Adding on to my previous post, I think Snatcher using souls for aesthetics instead of eating them makes more sense, because it’s honestly a heck of a lot darker and more evil a thing to do.
They’re no longer people, they’re just décor, mere objects to be used to decorate his contract dimension. It dehumanizes them; even food has the honor of having been alive, at one point, but décor isn’t any meaningful source of sustenance, merely something to set a scene. It’s inanimate, not alive, just props to be used for a scene.
What use does he have for souls, anyway? He doesn’t eat them- but spending an eternity locked away in a contract dimension to be used for aesthetic is like some sick, twisted form of community service, and they’re going to spend an eternity locked away in there, never seeing the sun or knowing rest, ever again.
I think that makes Snatcher a lot more insidious than simply eating souls- and I think it blends even better with how much of a ham he can be, and makes him a way better villain, overall.
You. You get it.

You know, I’ve suddenly been reminded of the fact that you never actually see Snatcher eat souls. He says he eats them, but he never actually does eat them on-screen. Even in the finale, he never says he’s eaten souls, he says he’s taken a few hundred souls.
I think he doesn’t actually eat souls, but just says he does to scare people and uses their souls for aesthetic purposes in his contract dimensions, instead.
I have finally made a reference doc posting for AO3 for all of the characters that appears in To Defend the People to the Utmost of Your Power!
