Hold onto your butts, this one’s good. Series writer Gabby explains that, “One [of the things that has most excited fans] is the identities: Queer Latina. She’s also a positive presence and has these catch phrases, like ‘chico.’ And she has feelings for Kate [Bishop, a.k.a. Hawkeye]. So what will the first major queer Latina superhero do with all her super crush-worthy powers?

  • “America will be one of 23 female-led titles currently in production”
  • “writer Gabby Rivera, who first garnered fame as the author of Juliet Takes a Breath, a YA novel about a Puerto Rican lesbian”
  • “And she has feelings for Kate [Bishop, a.k.a. Hawkeye]”
  • “feelings”
  • “for”
  • “Kate”
  • “series artist Joe Quinones and cover artist Marguerite Sauvage”
  • “America doesn’t know how powerful she is, but she’s gonna find out”

but also

  • “maybe there wasn’t space for me in comics”
  • “It’s a little bit terrifying and intimidating to be a queer woman entering the Marvel universe”

If you want to tweet Gabby Rivera, she’s @QuirkyRican on Twitter – her approach to America sounds PERFECT, and if you’re excited for the book (now or once it’s finally in your hands), let her know; we need our voices of support to be louder than the trolls. Make sure to let @Marvel know you approve of their decision to diversify both their leading heroes and their creator line-up, too.

Indie DJing, nostalgia, and the background misogyny that gets in the way

I used to DJ a lot of indie nights in Brighton on a regular basis. Stuff started slowing down towards the end, but it was a great 10 year stint that left me with a whole ton of incredible experiences (and a lifetime's quota of name-drop opportunities - the kind that only ever come out in those sad, drunken moments when one starts seeking validation through loose association - I digress).

Most of my memories are good and there's a whole new team of people doing their thing now. It's just that...the stuff in this comic is the stuff that half the people involved didn't really see. It almost seems petty calling it to attention. I mean, this is DJing. Indie DJing, no less. It's already plagiarism by nature. And all of us had to deal with our share of numptiness from the city's belligerent drunk punters, regardless of who we were.

It's just that... the more twattishness that can be eradicated through gently reminding people not to be dicks, the better.

Gingerhaze’s recent comic and excellent smackdown of those who would dismiss her has highlighted once again the fact that being a comic fan can be an intimidating and anxiety inducing experience, and how vitally important it is for everyone to feel accepted in stereotypically straight white...

I am endlessly grateful for the fact that my local comic store is Dave's Comics in Brighton. Access to somewhere that is excellent for comics - and wholly without pretension or judgement - is brilliant.  See, I'm used to a lot of the awful misogynistic bravado that flourishes in certain spaces (I worked as a DJ for 10 years). And it's easy to anticipate the sort of reactions that Gingerhaze so beautifully articulated; they happen all the time, pretty much everywhere.

So to find a comic shop that isn't just accommodating, but is outright welcoming, it's one of those things that it'd be so good to be able to take for granted. It's awesome

Generally, the things we're into, there will always be someone telling us that, for whatever reason, we shouldn't like them. And the people telling us this are often fiercely (misguidedly) protective of something that isn't theirs to protect. It's for all of us, (and it's all of us who are creating it), and destroy anyone who tries to tell you otherwise

And when you have fantastic people like neverrwhere inviting you to come in, to ask your questions, to find out what you like - or might like - these are the people who are worth engaging with. Not the people who are telling you to doubt yourself for even being curious, because really, those people are...dull.
