Film and TV actress Barbara Valentin (1940-2002) was dubbed the 'German Jayne Mansfield' and a 'Scandal Magnet'. Her résumé includes sexploitation but also art films directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Her private life was fodder for the tabloids. Pop star Freddie Mercury was ‘the love of her life’.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s prescient sci-fi masterwork (his only sci-fi film) “World on a Wire” looks at virtual reality through Sirkian reflected surfaces (among other things), creating one of the most ingenious depictions of simulated existence ever made. Extra note: Peter Green, whose instrumental “Albatross” is used to stunning effect here, dosed out with one of the film’s actors during an infamous Munich trip, reportedly the acid that spiraled him into madness. My piece at The New Beverly, where it plays for its last night, tonight. See it on the big screen! Read here:
