Doris Day, a terrific singer and under-appreciated actress who was one of the biggest stars in the world in the 1950s and ’60s, effectively dropped out of sight in recent years, and reportedly lives alone on a ranch in rural California. A long-time animal rights activist, Day won the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in film in 1989 — but skipped the Oscars ceremony that year, and the award was bestowed in absentia.
