thinking about this post about rose quartz (no hate to op bc this is a good post). i did get hints of this when watching future and i think that because steven universe future is mostly about steven coming to terms with his family inadvertently traumatizing him and rose being the foundation of that that steven is going to have less compassion for her and the things she left for him

steven is someone who's been hurt by what rose did although she had the best intentions and i think su future is trying to say that if that person hurt you, you dont have to forgive them or give as much grace as you normally would. that's important for a lot of traumatized people to learn in a world where forgiveness is often coerced and no amends are made. its important for steven specifically because he's been forgiving people who hurt him for literal years. him having less compassion or metered compassion instead of giving his whole self over to someone else is HUGE for him. that its for rose specifically is HUGE for him. its important to learn that you can be angry at the people who hurt you regardless of who they are or what they personally endured (in rose's case, familial abuse from the diamonds)

but like in the post thats linked, that lesson may tend to come off as mean spirited towards rose and her memory. that is a good criticism of the show because in the end rose is almost completely forgotten about, the reasons for her actions are pushed past by the finale or just called "excuses", hell some of the characters stop calling her rose and go back to calling her pink diamond. that is...mm. i didn't like that and honestly i think its indicative of the attitude towards rose that the show takes on. she chose that identity instead of remaining a diamond and as much as she admired humans for their ability to change she also changed! arguably rose's creation of her identity is a kind of self destruction that ends with steven, its motivated by love and by self hatred and its so interesting and heartwrenching to piece together. but in the end she's dead and everyone is moving on without her. its incredibly bittersweet.

i don't expect steven to be completely accepting of all of his mother's flaws and mistakes because he's in the middle of healing his own trauma and we only got so many episodes. but not casting rose in an entirely negative light wouldve been nice even if from steven's perspective and the shows message that wasn't going to happen. its arguable whether this method of forgetting rose and slowly watching her fade out of the tapestry of the show and out of the crystal gem's lives is sustainable long term. can steven ever completely put her aside and should he?

rose isnt present anymore but steven is. it comes down to whether you should have compassion for the dead or have compassion for yourself. steven choses compassion for himself but in a way i believe he also chose compassion for her. he forgives himself, something rose couldn't do. i believe she would've wanted him to
