While I'm a fan of Luhrmann and think he is a beautiful filmmaker, this film tips his style from gorgeous extravagance to wretched excess. Hilariously ironic for a film about the dangers of excess. Personally, I've always thought the novel extremely overrated and by no means Fitzgerald's best so I wasn't going in with an attachment to the work and looking for faults in his translation from page to screen. I had genuine hopes that the Luhrmann touch would bring out the best in it but instead was met with an abundant overuse of terrible CGI, music that seemed specifically designed to constantly take me out of the era and hyper pacing and edits which at first made me think something wrong with my copy. Still by no means a terrible movie, the costume design was gorgeous and Maguire, Edgerton and DiCaprio put in good performances but overall it came out pretty much as I feel the novel did, just an average piece of work.
