Summary: Hopper takes one look at Steve’s face when he gets back with El and takes him to the hospital to get checked out.

The sound of something moving snaps him out of his thoughts. When he turns to see what made it, his chest tightens. Hunched asleep in a chair, arms folded in front of him and head lolled forward, is Hopper. Steve watches as he shifts again, readjusting his shoulders and stretching his legs out in front of him.

Notes: It’s finally here, guys! My contribution for Fandom Trumps Hate 2020 (or the first chapter of it anyway). Written for @mrs-evadne-cake. Thank you so much for your donation! I did not expect to get bid on at all when I signed up, haha. But I’m so glad it happened because this fic absolutely would not exist otherwise.

Looking for an opinion or two here:

What do you think it would look like if Steve had tried pressing charges against Billy? Steve threw the first punch, but Billy was attacking a kid.

I'd think Hopper would be more than ready to do something about it, but idk how it would go in the long run.

Trying to figure out if it's something I could/should tackle in my fic or just kind of handwave it away...

  • Characters: Steve Harrington, Dustin Henderson, Mike Wheeler, The Party, Joyce Byers, Jim “Chief” Hopper, Nancy Wheeler, Jonathan Byers
  • Additional Tags: Thanksgiving Dinner, but not actual Thanksgiving b/c there’s no way the kids get out of that dinner with their families, Steve Harrington-centric, Fluff, Steve Harrington is a Sweetheart, Steve Harrington Has Bad Parents, it’s not like a main theme but it pretty much always factors into my fics so, Steve Harrington Can Cook, Families of Choice, Post-Season 2, but pre-Snow Ball
  • Word Count: 3,016

Summary: Everyone is together for a big not-quite-Thanksgiving meal a month after the Gate is closed. When the main dish is ruined, Joyce is worried there won’t be enough food to go around. Steve is worried he’s never going to live down that he’s got a turkey ready to go in his trunk. He brings it in anyway.

“…his trunk has more containers than he could probably fit on the Byers’ countertop. The main thing taking up space is a carefully wrapped roasting pan with the turkey he made and brought over before realizing that was ridiculous.”

Thank you for the prompt @jupitermelichios. It only took me 5/6 months to finish ^-^;;

I want steve and hopper to share a scene similiar to Joyce and El in 1x07. It was such a cute scene cause it was literally the first time El was getting any sort of exposure to some parental support, and I really wanna see the same with these two cause I think steve could use some reassurance from an adult.

God yes! I want this, too!

Season 2 really laid it out for us, too. They didn’t show us anything, but, like, Steve is beat UP. His face looks painful. It must hurt to just exist, and that’s only the injuries we can see. You KNOW his stomach and chest have got to be hurting, too. (also arms, hitting demo dogs with his bat has got to be rough on his whole upper body).

So Steve is injured and Hopper gets back with an exhausted/passed out El and sees this teenager who Joyce would totally mother except she just got her son back from being possessed. She’s a little preoccupied.

And Hopper is just like, Jesus kid what the hell happened? Because last time he saw Steve, his face was not painful to look at (except in that, “they’re all so young, why are we dealing with another end-of-the-world situation with a bunch of kids, he’s not even an adult yet” way).

Of course we barely know anything about Steve’s parents but the whole POINT of this is that they suck and he doesn’t get any sort of reassurance from them. So Hopper is just like, yeah we need to get you checked out. (i know, i know, it’s been done in fics before but that’s just because we all agree this would happen). He hates to leave El behind, but the whole gaggle of preteens is staying over at Joyce’s house and she’s there and so are Nancy and Jonathan (Nancy at least he trusts to be able to handle anything that comes their way, he remembers how well/easily she handled that rifle) and the gate’s closed and also maybe a little bit he feels bad about keeping El away from all her friends for so long. It’d be better for her to wake up surrounded by them than in his truck or the cabin.

ANYWAY he leaves El at the Byers and takes Steve to the hospital and waits with him and joins him when he obviously doesn’t want to be alone while he’s getting looked over. And everything’s not fine but he’s not dying, he’ll be okay. Whatever the deal would be IDK I’m not a doctor okay

And he goes back Joyce’s, gets El, and takes both of them back to his cabin because it’s too crowded to even think about sleeping comfortably and he thinks he deserves to be able to lay out on a bed of some sort, he’s been through a lot. El’s awake obviously, all the kids were awake because they had to explain everything all over each other and so she’s looking at Steve and he’s very confused about this psychic girl with powers who looks like she could beat him up without the powers, considering his track record. And IDK THINGS HAPPEN THEY BECOME A FAMILY

ALSO (no i’m not done I had more to say but it’s so LONG already)

ALSO I love Steve cop a lot but imagine this:

Him and Hopper are closer now. Not super like sappy because they’re not really Like That, but Hopper squeezes his shoulder and makes sure he takes his meds and doesn’t let him go home to an empty house. Basically Steve is spending more time at the cabin than he is at his own house (except for when the Party take the house over because it’s huge and they can all stretch out and play their game and it’s a good time all around but I digress)

SO Steve is like, wow this is what Fatherly Affection feels like. It’s really nice. Hopper cares about how school is going the rest of the year, but doesn’t give him shit about grades because it’s not like he went to college? I think? DON’T QUOTE ME ON THAT)

And Steve is obviously a little lost over what to do after school and (we’ll pretend he’s old enough to join the force immediately okay, IDK what the requirements were and i don’t want to look them up i’ve got a momentum going) mentions how he thinks Steve would make a good fit at the station.

Only.

Steve kind of freaks out. Like, in his head. Not outwardly.

But, he’s not sure he could handle it. He’s not sure he’s ready for any kind of commitment right after school. It’s hard to think about the future and what he could/should do when he’s still half convinced the gate is going to reopen (his nail bat is still in his trunk and he’s honestly not sure he’ll ever be able to go anywhere without it ever again)

But Hopper is more of a dad than his actual father and he doesn’t want to disappoint him. His father hates that he is so bad at school, that he’s not going to work at his company. And he doesn’t want Hopper to hate him or think he’s ungrateful, too.

So, stomach tight and feeling miserable he agrees.

He didn’t count on Hopper knowing His Kids. Hopper lets it go for a while, Steve starts to relax because they haven’t talked about it for a while. And the next time he brings it up, he pays close attention and it’s obvious that Steve doesn’t know how to say no and that leads to conversations about how Steve doesn’t owe him anything. He can take some time to figure things out and Hopper isn’t going to be mad if Steve decides he never wants to have anything to do with law enforcement, or anything else (though he admits he’d have a little trouble if Steve ever decided to be a lawyer or something and Steve snorts because yeah right but Hopper’s dead serious).

Whatever Steve decides to do, Hopper still expects him to help out with El (who obvi likes him, much to Mike’s not-too-serious annoyance) and to be at the cabin more often than his own house and Steve relaxes for real now and it’s like he can breathe for the first time in weeks.

IDK, this is literally the first thought I had when I got that ask.

Hopper & Harrington Teamup AU → based on this interview (and based loosely on “the nice guys”) Excited to finally find a proper job away from his dad, Steve is starting his job at the Hawkins police department, only to find himself working once again with Jim Hopper, who is not very thrilled about the arrangment. They have to overcome their [many] differences, including Steve’s lack of professionalism, Hopper’s anger managment issues and their different work tactics, while also taking care of El who keeps putting herself in the front line with them. Will they make it out of this partnership alive? Who knows. I don’t. I don’t know.

I’d say ‘I didn’t know how much I wanted this’ but…I did. I knew exactly how much I wanted this.
