As you can guess from the title, the angst is exquisite.

The Real Deal - by biggamma - Kakairu Naruto This was actually a BIRTHDAY BASH GIFT I GOT OF ALL THINGS LIKE WHAT???? HOW IS THIS SO GOOD???? Iruka seduces Kakashi but not all is what it seems Of Give and Take - by Fioreail - Xie Wang/Zhao Jing - Word of Honor Imma be honest and say you could read any of their stories and get all the angsty dubcon your heart desires but I pick this one cause it fulfilled a mighty need in me when I was watching the show. Xie’er thinks of taking what Zhao Jing will not give. Takes place immediately after Xie’er monologues at Zhao Jing.

Second Chances - @mrs-steve-harrington - Billy Cranston/Jason Lee Scott - Power Rangers We share one angst braincell so I could rec all of her stuff but I'll rec this one for the same reason as the above fic: it filled a mighty need in me for more angst after watching the movie. Of all the ways to realize he's found his soulmate, feeling Billy's death like a crack in his chest is the last thing Jason expected.

I’d be remiss to not link my own fic here lol. When You Go, Leave Me Alone was spurned on by the Stranger Things Writers’ Guild discord server and was initially going to be an adrenaline-fueled hookup at the end of the world that didn’t mean much to Nancy and Jonathan after the world didn’t end. The concept has changed a little as it has developed, I’m deep into chapter 2 now (but it’s looking like it’ll have 3 or 4 chapters by the time I’m done). It’s not endgame Stoncy, though. I won’t reveal who Steve ends up with, but that’s not super important yet.

This fic, They Don’t Talk After by @stevethehousewife, details a similar scenario, Steve, Jonathan, and Nancy hooking up after the various times they’ve all almost died, but with a much more hopeful ending. I’ve been reading through a bunch of their fics lately and really enjoying them btw.

complex by mgggsies on Ao3 is a non-linear fic that focuses on the highs and lows of the triad and takes equal time with each of them which I genuinely love. It has a hopeful ending and some bonus ronance!

i’m so good at telling lies. (that came from my mother’s side.) by ihaveforgottenn on Ao3 is a post-season 4 au fic that focuses on Jonathan and his trauma with his partners taking care of him. It explores the abuse he experienced at the hands of his father and the trauma from experiencing Horrors year after year.

Answering Your Call by @mrs-steve-harrington is an Omegaverse season 4-divergent fic where Jonathan and Nancy, bonded Alphas, follow Steve into the Upside Down after he dives through Watergate. Hurt/Comfort ensues. Listen I’m kind of obsessed with Steve getting hurt, particularly in seasons 3 and 4, I’m always going to be weak for anyone protecting and comforting him!!!

Fandom: American Horror Story: Hotel | Pairing: John Lowe/James Patrick March

Summary: Steps have to be taken to ensure that John and James are never separated, not even by death.

Notes: Talk about a fic that really nails the characters’ voices. This is incredibly romantic despite (or perhaps because of) the subject matter. I don’t read a lot of Major Character Death fics, but for this season of AHS it makes a whole lot of sense. I didn’t know I shipped these two until I was scrolling through the AHS tags and found this fic. It’s just so freaking good. If you enjoy the show or dark romance, check it out!

Notes: This is such a great story! The Dustin POV is wonderful. Sounds so much like him. The whole thing feels so in character. He can’t let things go once he’s onto something, to the point where he gets reckless and it’s as fun to read as it is sometimes stressful. I don’t know what else I can say about it. It’s awesome! Read it!

Fandom: Castlevania, Mortal Kombat

Summary: Following the death of Dracula, a late arrival stirs up trouble for Alucard.

Notes: Honestly, I feel like I can hardly speak to either of these fandoms. Like, I love the MK games and even some of the movies. And I definitely enjoyed Castlevania. But this is the only fic I’ve read for either. It was written for an event where I suggested a crossover between the two and the author nailed it, imo. The isolation that Alucard is feeling, the way it’s all described is so good. The fighting is engaging. It was an enjoyable read and I wanted to share it with others :D

Summary:

Keys is an author who writes in code because words fail him; his love letter became something words couldn't hope to convey.

Notes: Y’all, this is filled which such delicious pining and all the feels. I want to hug Keys so much. This was basically everything didn’t know I wanted in a fic after I’d seen the movie. It hurts, but some of that hurt is soothed in knowing how the movie ends.

Highly recommend if you enjoyed the movie and/or liked Keys. The author does a great job with him.

Summary: When Max shows up at Family Video near closing time it’s pretty clear that something’s on her mind. Steve isn’t sure he’s qualified to help her out, though. Still, he’s not going to turn her away, and who knows? Maybe they’ll find a way to help each other along the way.

Notes: Werewolf!Steve. WERWOLF STEVE. Need I say more? Okay, fine, I will! Steve & Max spending time together, being protective of one another, and bonding AHHH. Plus, so so much wonderful angsty goodness (Steve’s parents SUCK y’all, they suck sooo much). I wish I could do this fic justice but I don’t want to give too much away. Just know that it’s awesome and I think you should totally check it out if you haven’t already!

And let me tell you, there’s not nearly enough of it out there. But when I need a fic fix, I come back to this one! Rowena sees right through Sam, to what he needs, and it’s just the BEST.

Fics I enjoyed this year #1

Coming back for a third year of this! I feel like I read even less this year than last, but there are quite a few fics I just have to recommend to everyone.

Once again, these will be in no particular order beyond trying not to group all the ships/fandoms together in each post. Something that will probably become impossible as the year comes to an end, because I read more Stranger Things this year than anything I think haha. I hope you find something you may enjoy, and that the rest of the year treats you kindly.

For this one, I’ll be starting with a fic I actually read in 2020, but so late in the month that it couldn’t make it into one of last year’s posts. So here it is! (The rest will be ones I read this year :D)

The 4th Christmas by thelastnorthernlights

Fandom: Home Alone, The Sixth Sense | Pairing: Kevin McCallister/Cole Sear

Summary:

Four Christmases in the lives of our boys. AKA the college roommate AU literally nobody asked for.

Notes: OMG. Tell you what, I did not know I needed this pairing in my life until @mia6363 made me aware of it and omggg. This fic especially is just so good. There are some great call backs to both movies, though I was particularly amused by the Home Alone ones. It’s got a darkness to it, which perhaps shouldn’t be too surprising given that both movies have some dark moments (though one more than the other, sure). This fic is heartwarming and a genuine pleasure to read around the holidays.

The Other Boyfriend by @pterawaters

Fandom: Stranger Things | Pairing: Stoncy

Summary: Jonathan doesn't know what he expected, going to look for Steve Harrington Halloween Night. It certainly wasn't getting drunk together and confessing more than a few secrets.

Notes: This fic is in the running for my favorite of the year. I wish season 2 could have gone this route instead. It’s a great take on what might have changed, had Jonathan checked on Steve after getting Nancy home safe. Y’all know I’m a sucker for hurt/comfort, especially where Steve is involved, and this is just. So good for it. Really soothes the ache I still feel over season 2.

Bodies of Water by @elder-flower

Fandom: The Witcher (Netflix) | Pairing: Geralt/Jaskier

Summary: Jaskier opens up about a few things. Some of them, Geralt knew he was hiding; others, he most decidedly did not.

Notes: Once again, I don’t even go here. I’ve now seen probably 3 episodes total between both seasons of this show. But there’s something about this ship that I just can’t help but be drawn to. And this fic is absolutely wonderful. What a gem! It hits all the emotional beats I love. Miscommunication, but in a way that completely makes sense for the characters and the world they’re living in. A character being afraid they’ll be told to go, that they’ll be rejected, after realizing there’s been that miscommunication. The characters caring about and helping each other. And just. It’s so good! It’s mind boggling to me that this doesn’t have more comments. Maybe go read it and leave some!!

So I posted...a lot last year. It’s very hard to narrow it down, especially as one of my five is going to be an edit rather than a fic. But I’m gonna try! These aren’t in order of which is my absolute favorite because that would be impossible haha.

1. Steve Harrington - The Comeback Kid gifset

It’s the first time I tried out blending. And the first time I tried to make an edit with a song that I felt really fit a specific character. Every time I listen to The Comeback Kid, I picture Steve and all the things he’s been through and the way he keeps getting up, so it seemed perfect! And I’m just really proud of how this turned out when I finished it!

2. if we could start again - post-S2, pre-Stoncy hurt/comfort fic

I can’t even explain why I love this so much but it’s been one of my favorites since I posted it. Kind of dipping my toes into the angst pool again after basically writing nothing but fluff all year. While also still getting that nice hurt/comfort in there! I love Season 2 of the show and love seeing what might have happened when everyone met back up at the Byers’, so it was really fun getting to write my own version of it!

3. The Safety of Your Arms - post-S3, pre-Stoncy hurt/comfort fic

Hmm, I am perhaps sensing a trend...This is another one that’s been a fave since I posted it. I go back to reread it whenever I need some good ‘ol Steve-centric hurt/comfort haha. This is one where I had little moments in my head that didn’t get written into the work but are still there (at least, I think they still kind of show through) and idk. It’s the only time I’ve ever actually managed that!

4. the devil on my shoulder - The Babysitter (McG), darkish manipulation fic?

Not the kind of fic anyone’s following me for, but one that I am super proud of anyway. ~~I’m still stoked that it’s gotten more than one comment when I expected only the prompter would read it when it was posted.~~ I didn’t think I was even going to end up writing for the prompt because I hadn’t gotten an idea the whole month. But one morning I decided to try to write snippets of moments that would lead to the ending I wanted and I got the whole fic written in half a day. It’s a little weird, it’s a little dark, the relationships are unhealthy, and I love every word of it.

5. to hold you in my arms - post-S3, pre-Stoncy hurt/comfort fic

HUH THAT TREND CONTINUES...See, the thing is, I’m not great at get together fics so I just write a bunch of pre-relationship fics instead! This one was so nice to write. The prompt I wrote it for just spoke to me, like, right away. I love the way it all turned out. I feel like it’s one of my better pieces, tbh, especially with the emotions? Which I feel like I struggle with a lot in my writing. This one wasn’t necessarily easy but it was a delight to write and I like to reread it when I need a pick me up. :)

Summary: Fate has ways of bringing two people back together, no matter how long they’ve been apart. Eddie has to assume this is true, because what other explanation can there really be for how he just ended up on a group weekend ski trip with Richie, whom he hasn’t seen or heard from in a decade? He’s fine, he’s good, he can totally handle this. He’s not a confused teenager with repressed feelings anymore, and Richie is still just his old friend, right? RIGHT?????

My thoughts: Yes, it’s a wip. Yes, I’m terrible and haven’t finished my comment for the last update yet. But OMG. This story has been such a delight to read so far. These two have a past that we only get glimpses of at first but it’s certainly informed who they are as adults and I just. I love them so much. Also, freaking Stan and Patty!!! They are the best and they ship Reddie so hard haha

The Empty Pillow Next to Mine by @pterawaters

Fandom: Stranger Things | Pairing: Jancy, Stoncy

Summary: Jonathan knew that moving away from Nancy would turn their souldreams into nightmares, but he didn't think it would be this bad. Nancy hated the fact that Jonathan had to choose moving with his family over staying with her, and did everything she could think of to get him back. Before Jonathan left town, Steve never remembered his dreams. But the dreams he was suddenly remembering couldn't be souldreams, could they? Jonathan and Nancy already had each other.

My thoughts: Who is surprised there’s one more soulmate au in here? Or that there’s one more Ptera fic? Not me! I had to choose between this and Cursed (haha shameless double rec bwahaha) and chose this one because I love the idea of dreamsharing between soulmates. There’s that mix of fate in there, too, I think with how they find each other later on in the story and it’s. I love it a lot!

(or: Nancy and Steve are getting married. Jonathan’s happy. Really. Mostly. It’s complicated.)

My thoughts: I feel like the list wouldn’t be complete without at least 1 fic from Sathana, you know? Considering how much I love and still go back to reread that 30k word, Steve-centric fic like…a number of times.

First of all, LOVE the picspam/moodboard at the top of the fic. It gives me ALL THE FEELS, it’s so perfect for the story omggg.

Ughh, I love their friendship in this fic! It’s like, CMON GUYS. It’s all just right there, open.your.eyes!!! But the pining. You all know I’m a sucker for pining. And there is OODLES of it here. I love Jonathan’s friendship with Kali and how they push each other when they need it and just. *flails*

I love everything I’ve read from @mrvdocks, tbh. Seriously. They’re fics I go back to again and again. This one especially makes me smile super big. The bottling up of feelings until, omg we almost died. So good!!

Summary: Steve wakes up not sure exactly what just happened or where he is, but at least he’s got the two best people in the world to help catch him back up to speed. If only it was as easy for them as it was for Steve.

My thoughts: AHHH, the hurt/comfort! The Steve POV! The everything!! Man, @whookami just writes Steve so freaking well, I can’t even. His poor jumbled thoughts are all over the place and he’s not really sure of what’s going on but he’s so perfectly Steve throughout the whole thing. And I mean, c’mon. I’m a sucker for some insecurity and don’t see it nearly enough, okay?

This is one I love to go back to and read when I need something to make me smile. It’s such a wonderful fic!

Stiles stares for a moment in surprise, then throws up a shield as his cousin throws an ornate dagger right at him. He can feel the pack tense behind him, ready to strike, but then he’s dropping the shield and hugging her. And dodging another dagger. He can hear Peter’s rumbling growl behind him, but he waves a hand over his shoulder, letting the pack know he’s fine.

My thoughts: I freaking LOVE when it turns out someone is related to the Addams family. It makes for the best kind of crossovers in my opinion. Especially so when it’s Stiles, who is such a goofball but also has a dark side to him. I feel like he can definitely fit in with his cousins.

This story is so much fun to read! They love that Stiles’ boyfriend is undead because of course they do!! The author does so well in the portrayal of both the Teen Wolf and the Addams Family characters. Such a delight. :D

My thoughts: I don't even go here. I watched maybe 2 episodes of this show. The most I know about this show is stuff I picked up from gifs and the things my bro in law and dad wouldn’t stop talking about when they were watching it.

But oh my gosh does none of that matter when reading this gorgeous fic! The author has such a way with words. The blending of the story with Geralt’s memories of the event that’s led them to where they are. The fate of it all. It’s just SO GOOD and I love it and I probably won’t ever finish the show but why should I when I can just believe this is canon instead??

As he put his focus towards the problem at hand, in the back of his mind was the realization that he had to approach this not as the great Benoit Blanc— But as a friend.

My thoughts: What a wonderful post-movie fic! Another one with a great Benoit-voice. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to write him when he’s got such a unique way of speaking/expressing himself.

I love Benoit offering to come and help Marta with the auction and just keeping her company in that huge house. Their friendship and the build up to their relationship is so great. Plus there’s a bit of mystery/action in there which was great!

My thoughts: Ugh, it’s just. So good. Cole needs all the hugs while dealing with the members of the cult that only he can see. I love this take on how things might go if the botched ritual had had consequences for all of them. And the mentions of Bee are just *chef’s kiss*. Forever living in hope they will write some more for the fandom.

My thoughts: I don’t know what took me so long in finally reading this fic this year but I’m so glad I did. I love a good a/b/o fic, but I’m also super sensitive to a lot of stuff that’s kind of popular in the genre. But this! Literally the best idk what word I’m looking for, version? Best version of how heats work in an a/b/o universe ever.

There’s some rough stuff in there and you know me, mostly reading for the stoncy of it all ha. But the whole fic is so so good. The characters’ personalities really fit with how I think they might be if they were actually in that kind of universe/world. I love the way they work the relationship out in the end. Awesome fic!

My thoughts: Oh man, OH MAN. This was the fic I needed after watching the show. It’s one where I don’t want to say too much and ruin anything. But it’s beautiful and emotional and I absolutely love it. If you enjoyed the show (or at the very least love Hannah and Owen as much as they deserve) you should check it out!

My thoughts: Y’all, Steve with a crush is adorable. Steve being so caught up in his nerves over said crush is even better. This fic is so sweet and makes me smile every time I read it. I’m always up for a bit of a misunderstanding with a smidge of interfering friends who can nudge the main character into fixing it. Love it!

My thoughts: This fic is so good! I don’t usually read fic where the characters are separated for long periods of time. The balance between the happiness and the sadness doesn’t always work well enough for me. I’m sensitive, if something is too sad it doesn’t matter that there’s a happy ending sometimes.

This fic does balance it, and does it well! Their fast friendship as kids and their communication while they’re separated is lovely. The way they find each other again and again. Eddie’s history working against him for a while, but the way they still come together. I love everything about it!

It’s the end of the year and I thought it would be nice to do this again. I read significantly less fic this year than ever before. Partially because I’ve been writing so much, but also I think because of how draining 2020 has been.

But I did read and enjoy some stuff and want to share the love!!

Summary: Concerned that Steve’s less-than-stellar grades might have been making them look bad, his parents hired him a tutor, Jonathan Byers, they were sure he wouldn’t find as distracting as his last one. Sure, Jonathan had good grades in school, but he really wished he didn’t have to take the extra work to help his mother put food on the table. After all, everyone knew Steve Harrington was a jerk. Right? It turned out, not so much. After an impromptu study-session-turned-party and a game of spin the bottle, Steve and Jonathan both found themselves dating Nancy Wheeler. And that wasn’t even the strangest thing that happened to any of them that week.

My Thoughts: Where to even start with this fic? It is so, so good! There are going to be more than one season 1 aus on my rec lists this year because there have been more than one great fics written for it. This one is definitely up at the top for me. You know how sometimes it’s nice when the relationship part of the fic works out fairly well and the conflict is more from outside of it? Yeah, this fic hit that just right. The way Stonathan get together still makes me smile. And when Nancy is brought in? Damn! So good :D And of course there’s actually a plot because this is ptera, queen of plots tbh, and it’s awesome!

Summary: Inheriting the estate of a well-known reclusive mystery author, especially inheriting in the specific circumstances in which she did, Marta learned a lot of things quickly. She learned that there was a wine cellar in the house, which housed the kind of liquor she was afraid to breathe on, after Googling how much it was worth. She learned that after the Instagram Live video of her and her car, Marta had to get a new car and fast to avoid being tailed by press and fans. And it meant, fastest of all, Marta learned to dread lawyers. Luckily, Benoit is a good friend to have in a tight jam.

My thoughts: There’s just something about marriage of convenience that is so good, you know? This fic is short and sweet and doesn’t need to be longer because it gives you everything you need. Harlan has a flare for the dramatic and I have no trouble believing he would keep causing Marta a headache like this. The Benoit voice in all of this author’s fics is just *chef’s kiss*. So good! I can hear him so clearly when he speaks, it’s lovely. Just a great fic!

My Thoughts: This is a gut punch of a fic, wow. I don’t have the words to adequately express how good this was. The angst in this is done so well. The power to repeat something over and over but still remember how it went that first time? Wow. IDK man, I can’t do it justice. It’s just one of my favorite x reader fics. It still crosses my mind all these months later.
