Critical moments of Stede’s development

From the word go, he has been identifying himself as a Gentleman. He has been making himself behave according to the rules and social constructs he was raised to be part of. Yes, he is mild and gentle but he has also been obsessed with pirates for a long time and knows exactly how fearsome they can be, but he can’t quite bring himself to sever himself from his old identity.

These following three moments are crucial moments in him actually and finally stepping away from that world, the world he hates and that makes him miserable.

At the party, this is the first glimpse we get of Captain Stede. Instead of just giving vague directions and letting other people run things, he barks an order like a Captain. He commands Blackbeard to stand down and Blackbeard, visibly startled and confused, obeys.

The next time is when Calico Jack invades. He takes a stand for the well-being of his crew. For the entirety of Calico Jack’s visit, he has followed the correct protocols for hosting a guest, even if that guest is someone rude and who he personally dislikes.

But the moment damage is done to his crew - yes, Karl is a crew member, shush - he doesn’t even hesitate to go stone-cold fury and expel Calico Jack. No politeness. No delicacy. No hiding behind dainty manners and courtesy.

And finally is when he breaks all social protocol in front of the society he has been carefully behaving to fit in with.

Admittedly, he is drunk at this point (and there’s a whole kettle of fish to explore in the fact that he descended to drunken misery when he returned to his old life, much as Ed did on the Revenge, but later!) which is why the inhibitions are a lot lower than they would have been.

This is where we get a glimpse of the kind of pirate Stede could be once he sheds the constant impulse to behave as he’s always been told to. He’s not a delicate and fragile man anymore. He’s not someone who will tolerate being manhandled. He will defend himself if provoked.

He and Ed are both on journeys from opposite ends of the spectrum and I’m so excited to see them meet somewhere in the middle instead of both of them trying so hard to maintain their roles.

“The Gentleman Pirate” is as much of a Fuckery as “Blackbeard”. But Stede’s not just “playing at pirates” anymore. He’s made his choice. He’s shed the trappings of the Gentleman now and he’s going to be the Captain his crew needs.
