Adam:  “My dad wanted to be a dragon too, but he never showed signs of the spark. All I heard growing up was how I would become one. They never said I had to, it’s not something you can force, but that was what they meant. They were trying to, like, manifest it or something. They wanted it so badly that I accepted it had to happen to me."

Shay: “I don’t know a lot about, you know…all that stuff.” He gave a dismissive wave of his hand. “But if you want to talk more about it, I could try and listen. I’m a good listener. So I’ve been told.”

Caleb: "She called to remind you to come over tomorrow. And that your dad’s ankle’s all healed up and he needs help with the shed, or the bed, I don’t remember. I wasn’t really listening.”

Sara: “Well, if I get it right, I think Della might move me up to helping with the students in the infirmary.” She clutched her notebook to her chest with a grin. “That’s a step closer to Aedridge, when I finish my studies.”

Olena: “You’re not like me. Dragons are supposed to be warriors. So it’s natural to want to fight your way out of every corner, to bite and kick and scratch, or even to run, if fighting isn’t the way. But what if running won’t save you, either? What then?”
