DND story idea
I can easily see this being in a Baldur’s Gate story or even an official campaign but I wanted to pitch it here because I need to get it off my chest. For anyone DnD veterans or just people who watched the movie theirs a Fat Dragon named Themberchaud. His backstory is surprisingly sad but he’s also a power hungry dragon so sympathy only goes so far.
The TLDR is The Duergar (aka Dark Dwarves or Underdark Dwarves) have a capital that makes its money off the back of the highest quality weapons. They can do this thanks to Dragons Fire. Dragons rarely work willingly for others especially Chromatic Dragons. So they raise them from and egg and psionically make them more docile. However Dragons get more powerful the older they get and can fend it off eventually so they make a habit of slaying them and replacing them before that happens.
Themberchaud was one such Dragon. He was given so much to keep him happy, all the treasure and food he could want that would make any dragon jealous. But as he got older he got the impression the Dwarves were hiding something from him and would quietly employ mercenaries to investigate for him.
He must have discovered the truth as in the movie he doesn’t live a pampered life in The capital and has set up a new lair as seen in the movie. Unfortunately for him where he’s set up home is even more dangerous than where he escaped as it’s home to the most powerful Dragon that isn’t a god. It a Lich Dragon to boot. Themberchaud probably isn’t aware of this as he’s a pampered dragon on the run in lands he barely knows.
Theirs an entire story to be had there with a Fat Dragon who lived the high life in ignorance, running from a deadly truth he only recently learned and is likely eager to bring back the lifestyle he’s accustomed to.
A Dragon as powerful as him, as ignorant as him and as spoiled as him could go in many directions. He could be an ally learning more about the world and reforming his greedy and spoiled ways, or he could be a villain using his natural power to form a legion of followers to do his work for him rather than do it himself like other dragons because of how lazy he is.
