i’ve been a nasty girl

I imagine this was shooting for ironic humor (and as such is in seriously bad taste), but this image is so heavy with textual symbolism I can’t stop thinking about it. Laura Palmer the dead prom queen as pin-up girl/mannequin, both a target of lustful & often covertly pedophilic projection and a wielder of others’ (esp mens’) projections as a means of control/survival. While in canon Laura endured the virgin/whore dichotomy mostly by being publicly “virginal” while privately “whoreish,” here we see airbrushed Playmate Laura presented as a suitable object for sexual fantasy. But reflecting on her character and story gives the image an underlying resonance—this character is still an underage high school girl grappling with terrible traumas and dark forces.

The photo touches on theTwin Peaks themes of sex work and child exploitation of course, but I also see the protean nature of innocence/ignorance/pity and guilt/knowledge/disgust and how those values are assigned by the bystander/viewer. This jarring juxtaposition of dead teenager with Playboy bunny soft-porn aesthetic shows neither side of the virgin/whore dichotomy—or even somehow successfully occupying both roles at once—can hold the complexity of a complete human being.

Laura was prized by her community in her public barbie doll form, but her sexualized form was hidden like an illicit porn mag under the mattress, and her abusers transferred the shame of their desires onto her through the abuse. As horrified as the townspeople of Twin Peaks were by her death, they’re even more dismayed at the rude exposure to conscious daylight of the shadow side of Twin Peaks entailed in investigating her murder—a dark side they all to some degree have been aware of and rationalized or compartmentalized or just endured in order to live there. Most of them want to mourn the loss of “one of their own"—the acceptable public face of Laura Palmer, without acknowledging the existence of the shadow side that killed her. BECAUSE TWIN PEAKS AS IT IS CAN’T GO ON EXISTING WITHOUT DENIAL. Laura’s illicit/private/abused self was thrown in the town’s proverbial dumpster, wrapped in plastic. Cooper & his investigation, representing the drive for truth/memory/accountability, is publicly welcome but privately resisted, because even those who know they had nothing to do with this act of murder fear what repressed secrets of their own could spill out in the process.
