“money doesn’t buy happiness”

let me test this hypothesis

Here’s the deal on this. If you take a logarithmic (base 10) scale of income, the happiness vs. income graph is approximately linear. What this amounts to is that when you consider income on a linear scale, once you reach, say, the middle class or so, more money doesn’t really make you any happier because your quality of life hasn’t significantly changed. You’d have to get filthy stinking rich to experience a noticeable change in overall life satisfaction. Since the middle class has been the majority of the population for a good long time in America, the “common sense wisdom” of “money doesn’t buy happiness” became the prevailing philosophy (in part due to its usefulness in curbing greed in young children). Moreover, “happiness studies” (positive psychology, “happiness” economics, etc.) are recent sciences, so it’s only in the past couple decades that the data on income’s relation to happiness has been really solid. Since these are small (albeit growing) fields of study, the general public doesn’t really get any of this information except in the form of self-help books written by positive psychologists.
