Supercorp, Superlane, and everyone/therapy. Captain of the Sunshine Protection Force (SPF). Talk to me about Kara Danvers, the Danvers sisters, and sad headcanons.
they're just such cute names! as someone old enough to remember when fandom didn't just desperately mash every name together for a ship, i wish fandoms put more effort in these days because most shipnames are dire. sometimes, like sundey or karadox, it works in terms of vibes and actually making sense. but most of the time it'd be better to either use descriptors or just the X/Y format.
I feel you. And without much thought put into the ship name most of these function like X/Y anyway (reign/corp, guardian/corp, mon/winn, etc.)
Otherwise, as someone who enjoys word play and semantics, I really do enjoy the portmanteau style!
To give a name to something is a beautiful and rare little opportunity, and when it is formed in a way that says something about the relationship or the group it will come to refer to, to me, the other more monstrous frankenwords are worth tolerating.
I think they’re probably the best ones in the fandom (although granted, as the person who thought of “Sundey,” I’m very biased.)
Karadox like “paradox,” given the time travel element.
Sundey works on several levels with sunshine, the Supergirl air day, and a large, beautiful ice cream treat.
Ultimately I think they benefitted from smaller fandoms that allowed a meaningful name to develop before something worse caught on with too many people (looking at you, “Supercorp.” ;) )
I know for sure that at some point, Kara and Alex were using some face mask (because girls night and skin care is fun) and somehow got j’onn to let them put the face mask on him
J’onn: No thank you. I’m a shapeshifter, my skin is already flawless.
Alex: So? Kara’s alien biology means she can’t break out, but she’s still participating because she’s a supportive sister.
Can you please gif Kara/Williams moment during game night when they are drinking to old and new friends and then Alex kinda looks at the two of them like she's knows there is something going on?
Hey there, I just want to say I'm thankful for you being a consistently calm and positive "mum" figure in the SG fandom. Your analyses have always been thoughtful - whether it be Kara's character breakdown, the explanations on how Lena previously failed to see through Kara's disguise, or even your take of the sdcc 2017 kerfuffle.. When I see instances of cancel culture rearing its head again, I sometimes get reminded of the sdcc incident, and it makes me wonder if things are really as people say
Oh, thanks! 😊💛
Concerning “cancel culture,” that’s honestly a good disposition to have!
Some will try to apply the term to situations concerning legitimately abusive people when, if they should continue to hold power in their respective industries, others would be placed in danger. Defenders of this behavior will blame cancel culture for their fall from grace, but that doesn’t mean every complaint concerning “cancelling” is wrong.
It also doesn’t mean it’s more Liberal to happily cancel people—pay attention to who is cancelled faster and with more vitriol for comparatively minor offenses (or even honest mistakes and things that are misread). People of color, queer people, women, etc. fall harder for less.
Take a look at the content of the tweets and comments directed at them—sometimes, a significant amount are tinged with hatred not just for what they’ve done, but for who they represent.
So you should trust that instinct to look a little closer, to watch the full interview, to wonder at their intentions or if they can change for the better. Or, conversely, to wonder if there should be a bigger social backlash and conversation than there presently is.
All we can do is try to find the true context, listen to what others have to say, and then decide for ourselves what we think is fair.
And if the SDCC 2017 controversy has encouraged some to do that, then perhaps some good has come from it!
I saw your Jenna Marbles post and you say, "This lead to fellow artist, youtuber, and platonic best friend Julien" and... he's her boyfriend???
Hahahaha that he is! That’s just a reference to how sometimes one of them will "friendzone” the other even though they're actually together, like in this video.
I mean who are we kidding, if the paragon of humanity was a supergirl character, it would definitely be Kelly!!
Aw, I like that! As a psychologist, she’s dedicated her life to understanding what makes people tick and helping them to process the thoughts and feelings and events that are most difficult—but make them human—in a healthy way. And she brings a wisdom regarding the human condition with her in all aspects of her life.
She just recently helped Alex, Paragon of Anxiety, take some time to heal (something humans have to do some times lol) and spend some quality time with her. And Alex liked it!
She also generally feels compelled to help the people she meets in a very personal way—as opposed to maybe the helping Save The World kind—because the personal is important. Essential, even.
I was also thinking about all those times when chyler praised Melissa and said all those positive things about her, if maybe she knew that she wasn’t feeling very confident about herself and wanted her to know that she was important and good
So I don’t want to speculate about their personal relationship and the motivations behind the actions of Melissa or her loved ones concerning this revelation too much.
It’s natural to wonder about things and hope the people around her will take care of her, but we don’t really know them, so I think it’d be irresponsible for me to respond as if I do.
But, for what its worth, we do happen to know Chyler started saying nice things about Melissa pretty immediately lol. Here is a nice quote from the 2015 SDCC panel, before the show officially aired:
Chyler:“You know, I gush about her a lot. I love this girl. I mean it really is one of those incredible things when you meet somebody—especially somebody that you’re gonna work with—that you just get it. And I really feel like it was almost instantaneous between the two of us. And I love her and I’m so proud of her.”
Saw your tags beneath Melissa's ipv video and I agree. She is also such a private person. She rarely posts personal things until and unless they mean a lot to her. But this is different and it must have taken a lot of courage to not just write but also make a video of this. Sometimes I wonder if playing Supergirl gave her that strength or did she mature into it and the answer is probably somewhere on the spectrum I think.
I think she rose to the occasion! And keeps rising.
And her care shows in the way she pushes past her fears time and again to use her platform. Melissa is already coming from a place of introversion and anxiety about the public eye, but she consistently makes this decision to open up because she thinks it’ll help others—in this moment, displaying a truly humbling level of bravery.
And as extraordinary as posting a video of herself walking through the painful details of everything she went through was, choosing to tell others close to her about her abuse and choosing to leave her abuser are decisions that 1 in 4 women will have to make.
And that’s to the heart of it, that as impossible as that seems—even for Supergirl—we are all capable of finding that strength.
Melissa laid out the reasons it felt impossible—wrong, even—to tell anyone, to leave him. Her love for him and wish to fix him, fear of the consequences he’d suffer, fear that she had closed herself off too fully to have anyone to turn to.
And then she does something important. She emphasizes how good both telling someone and leaving felt:
“It was the first moment I spoke about the abuse to anyone. I can’t describe the amount of relief and solace I felt.”
“[…] Recusing those habits and breaking that cycle was the most rewarding, empowering choice I have ever made for myself. I feel an enduring strength and self-assurance that has dug its roots deep within me.”
Mixed in with the hurt and the shame and the on-going healing is the feeling that this is just better. And that is a powerful argument, and likely the core of the message she was trying to send with this video.
Another powerful argument for opening up to your loved ones about the abuse you are experiencing is how well Melissa’s video was received, the impact it made. Her story spread like wildfire, and not driven by the horror she went through, but by the power she exudes.
Her strength is undeniable. And that’s why she is an example for what healthy bravery looks like: not isolating yourself to try to handle your hurt alone, but opening yourself up to others and letting them help you.
True strength doesn’t come from the sun, it comes from within and shines through when you make hard, life-changing choices, when you risk everything to make things better. And not just for the benefit of others, but for yourself.
For Melissa, this means honoring Supergirl’s values—Stronger Together, bravery when it’s difficult, especially when it’s difficult—but repeatedly challenging the perception that she is invulnerable.
Do you have an idea of how the crisis will go down, specifically for Kara? Or how this crisis will affect her relationships?
Not really! Lol
We’ve gotten vague insights like Chyler’s “It affects everybody in every way and all hell breaks loose and it kind of just changes the dynamic for everybody." and a writer’s “And Supergirl fans — don’t worry, there’s incredible stuff for Kara in this crossover, too. She’s pivotal to all 5 episodes.”
So I expect it to affect the characters pretty significantly this time around, but what that looks like remains to be seen.
I’d expect them to pay homage to Supergirl and the Flash’s comic death, but that could be in the form of visual staging, or a different Super’s death, or a temporary Kara death, etc. etc.
I am curious to see how whatever happens in crisis affects the Kara and Lena dynamic, as it looks like a confrontation regarding Lena’s true feelings and plans may occur in 5x07 or 5x08. Or perhaps there will be no confrontation and Kara will keep her revelation a secret just as Lena comes around re: their friendship because of crisis events. There are lots of possibilities! lol
We can all make predictions based off of the comics and where the shows are going and what we think would be a good story, but no one really knows. Even based off of set pictures it’s hard to piece together any story beats, and all the interpretations I’ve seen that treat their reads of what’s going on like breaking news are really just speculating.
So it can be fun to come up with theories, but there are no real answers just yet!
I know a lot of people are concerned about there being 3 Supermen and no alternate Supergirls (let alone no female hero guest stars other than the ones we know from the main shows) in the crossover, but I don't think it'll be that bad (despite Marc Guggenheim)? At least one of the Supergirl writers already talked about Kara having a pivotal role, and most of the announced characters will probably only be cameos or get brief scenes, unlike the leads of each show.
I like to say it’ll probably be somewhere in between our hopes and our fears. Good things and bad things. Basically, I'm sure there will be issues, but I’m hype anyway!
Each year we can see their efforts to reference how powerful and good Supergirl is or feature the Danvers sisters or try to make it relevant to the show Supergirl, and yet each year there are issues with those things. They have managed it with surface stuff (like references to how Kara is the most powerful one) but then suffer to make those elements integral (like continually finding a way to weaken her/sit her out, and then letting Superman fight normally).
But we can always expect our writers to work on improving. Maybe the group will try harder on these levels because we know they’ve heard feedback on this, or maybe Supergirl’s historical connection to this story will lend itself to more core story involvement for Kara.
This guy’s new, so we don’t really have a reference as to what he considers “pivotal,” but it’s a pretty strong word, so it’s encouraging! “Incredible” is also exciting.
There’s going to be a lot going on with this many guest appearances, but as much as we fear the ways it could go wrong—Superman eating into Supergirl focus like last year—there are as many ways it could go right.
My dream, honestly, is a symbolic passing of the torch from these previous Super characters to Supergirl. That could be incredibly powerful.
And even if we don’t get that, it’s very likely—based on previous crossover scenes—that we’ll get recognitions from the gaggle of Supermen that Supergirl is powerful and heroic. Maybe even the most powerful and heroic of them.
Not everyone cares about these legacy appearances because they don’t have a history with it. But as someone who had a poster of Brandon Routh’s Superman on my wall, who’s favorite show was Smallville for years, and who gravitated to Supergirl because of these previous Super stories, it means something in a big way.
(And we don’t know plot yet, but as the date grows closer, the more I suspect that they’ll pay homage to Supergirl’s death in Crisis on Infinite Earths, even if she doesn’t actually die. And seeing the link to this huge moment in comics history while featuring a Supergirl who is now more valued in pop culture would be Nice.)
Re: Female superheroes, there are the Lois’ from Smallville and Supergirl! She isn’t a Super, but with two Lois’ and a Superman who lost Lois appearing, it’s possible the appearances of the Supermen will also focus on the essentiality of Lois in Superman’s story. She’s a hero herself, and she’s Clark’s grounding.
(You know what would also be awesome? Reporter!Bonding between the Lois’, Kara, and Iris.)
Honestly, we really can’t really speak to how long these appearances will be. They may be disappointingly quick for fans of the characters making the appearances, or they may linger and cut into time we’d prefer to spend on the Supergirl show characters. We also don’t know if this is the last round of guest announcements 😅.
But there’s no point in dreading the thing, what will happen will happen. If it’s disappointing, we’ll have plenty of time to break down why in the aftermath.
Might as well hope for the best and try to enjoy the ride!
I def understand frustration over ages and messy timelines, and I appreciate the well-reasoned and well-tempered answers you provided. But just for anyone still beating this dead horse, please realize: How I Met Your Mother once aired an episode with a title card indicating St. Patrick’s Day was in April. So, ya know, sometimes humans just be humans. Lol.
Bahahahahahaha omg, a fair point!
If I were writing the show I’d probably have forgotten about time and kept Kara 24 for at least 3 consecutive years like an ageless cartoon character or ageless Kryptonian.
And then in the 4th year I’d remember and be like “Kryptonians don’t celebrate birthdays so Kara forgot how old she is! It’s Fine!”
