I love all things cute and funny. Fan of Musicals (esp. w/ Gene Kelly), Sci-Fi, Rock, and a hundred other things totally unrelated (Ok, this blog’s mostly about Gene Kelly)

You dance love, and you dance joy, and you dance dreams. And I know if I can make you smile by jumping over a couple of couches or running through a rainstorm, then I’ll be very glad to be a song and dance man.-Gene Kelly

I hope you had a wonderful birthday, dear 💋!!!! Thank you for tagging me, and your wonderful blog. It is one of my favorites, I’ve learned a lot about Gene, previously unknown to me. He would love your efforts to keep his legacy alive, too! Keep up your good work 👍!

What do I love most about him? I’m afraid, I’m not able to commit to something special. I love him as a human being with strengths and weaknesses (like all of us), his charisma and radiant smile, his incredible creativity as choreographer/producer, and, of course, as an amazing dancer who created his own, unique style. He has always been an inspiration to me … never give up on working to realize your dreams!

I guess, it is no surprise that my favorite Gene movie is “Singin’ In The Rain”! This masterpiece is the peak of his career, it could not been better … no matter how you look at it! Besides, Donald O’Connor was the best dancing partner he ever had! These two were such a perfect match, had such an enormous chemistry and synchronicity … it knocks me out!!!

There are two numbers, I don’t want to leave out here, because I love them so much: ‘Alter Ego Dance’ in “Cover Girl” (1944) and his stunning dance on roller skates (‘I Like Myself’) in “It’s Always Fair Weather” (1955).

Wherever you are now, Gene … you’ll always be loved and remembered as one of the greatest dancers of all time ❤!!!!!

Thank you so much for those kind thoughts!!!🤗 Your blog is one of my favorites too. All your posts are so well thought out & put together. I agree he and Donald were absolutely wonderful together💕

Omnibus: Dancing A Man’s Game (1958) - Gene Kelly’s attempt to remove stereotypes and get more men interested in dancing by equating it with athletics.

This is a cool little demonstration of tap dance, past and present, done by 46 yo Gene Kelly & 15 yo Patrick Adiarte. Patrick was a dancer in “Flower Drum Song,” the broadway musical being directed by Gene that year.

In 1944, an interviewer asked Gene Kelly to describe his most embarrassing moment. His response: “in a high school version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, I played Bottom, and while doing a little dance, I heard a chuckle go through the audience. My pants had fallen down.”

For me, this answer is endearing for two reasons: 1) it references Shakespeare (my other field of study); and 2) it shows, even as a teenager, Kelly managed to work dance into a non-musical stage play. (Image: Pinterest) https://ift.tt/2qo6Inq

Thirty years after filming Anchors Aweigh, Frank Sinatra writes about his friend, “The Kelly smile lights up a few wrinkles. The Sinatra lean is well-marbled. Permissiveness in the movies has cut into public demand for our wholesome sailor-boy musicals. […] But not even a major sociological earthquake could dislodge me from my position as Gene Kelly’s number one fan.” (Image: It’s Always Fair Weather, Tumblr) http://ift.tt/2DJqJxw

Kelly’s next film was neither about forging new territory nor about advancing the musical.

“He didn’t really want to do it but he did do it and he did it for Judy’s sake and she was going through one of the most wretched periods of her professional career during the making of that movie.” -Clive Hirschhorn

Summer Stock was to be Garland’s last film at MGM and Kelly realized it had come full circle and he was now repaying her for the support she had shown him in For Me and My Gal.

“There’s a sense of generosity there of not kind of prodding her but rather playing to her. He’s a fairly tough guy so watching him do this total opposite thing, showing compassion. It was kind of… remarkable.“ -Elvis Mitchell
