@mostlydaydreaming

I love all things cute and funny. Fan of Musicals (esp. w/ Gene Kelly), Sci-Fi, Rock, and a hundred other things totally unrelated (Ok, this blog’s mostly about Gene Kelly)

Donald O’Connor, 1955

“Somehow I have learned what prayer is, that to ask for the specific is meanness and only to seek the all good should be the purpose of such communication from the soul. One’s conscience, one’s sense of good and evil make this all plain in time. And all this I learned in my own sort of Sunday School … the dingy theaters of the country … where I started off by worshiping the plain people who attended them!”

Look at that gaggle of Old Hollywood statesmen!🤗

Donald O’Connor, Gene Kelly, Cary Grant & Fred Astaire out and about promoting That’s Entertainment! (1974)

What was so perfect about “That’s Entertainment!,” was that it gave all those wonderful OH stars one final victory lap in the sun as a new generation discovered their greatness!!!💕 (before the internet when clips became widely available). I love watching them wade thru crowds of press & adoring fans (as they should be!!!) instead of fading into obscurity.

They deserved this!🥰🥰🥰

Carol Lawrence on Gene Kelly & Donald O’Conner

“Gene Kelly saw me in ‘West Side,’ came backstage, and said,’ I want to do a TV special with you, kid. Can you come to California next week?’ He was one of the reasons I went into show biz, but I said I had a contract and wouldn’t get time off until the next year when I had two weeks.

“He said, ‘Okay, I’ll wait for you.’ I thought he was going to dance with Cyd Charisse and maybe I would have one number, but it was just him, Donald O’Conner, and me. I died and went to heaven.”

Remembering Donald O'Connor on his birthday 🌹

Born on August 28, 1925 as Donald David Dixon Ronald O'Connor in Chicago, Illinois
Died on September 27, 2003 in Woodland Hills/L.A., California

“He played to generations of fans – in Vaudeville, in films, in musical shows – and his comic tap dance was a style that he embellished with grace, solid talent, and an honesty that shows through in all his work. He claims he learned comedy because he could not tap dance well. Though this may have motivated his comedy tap, he certainly was well-trained by the top comics of the century throughout his years on the road in American Vaudeville.” Rusty E. Frank, “Tap! The Greatest Tap Dance Stars and Their Stories, 1900 -1955”

“I guess I was never impressed with myself as a performer. That’s just something that I learned when I was a child. Like breathing and eating. It’s just something I did. I was never impressed with myself being different than any other kid. Although I never knew what other kids were like. Children used to frighten me. Really, I always thought, they were strange creatures. Little creatures running around without any talent.
That I was out there working with the act, doing hand-balancing and singing and dancing and all of that stuff, it was something that I went out and did. I loved those years on the road. I loved fooling around in front of the audience, I worked very hard. I knew the harder I worked, the more laughs and more applause I got. No one had to teach me that, I could hear it. And that was my thing. That’s what I was there for. And I really lived to do just that.”
Donald O'Connor, 1988
